The Panhandle Dune Ecosystem Project, created by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund, helps conserve dunes in various ways. They plant different plant species like sea oats to strengthen and stabilize the dunes. Beach mice are used to assess the suitability of dunes as habitats. Overall, they aim to restore natural biodiversity in the dunes. Another organization is the Panhandle Dune Ecosystem Project, created around six years ago by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund. They help conserve dunes in a numerous of ways. They plant a variety of plant species in them to build up and strengthen dune areas and restore connections between habitats. Planting vegetation like sea oats is important because it stabilizes the dune through its roots which bind the sand in place. In order for stabilization to occur, the sea oats need to cover 60-80% of the total area of the dune habitat. They also use beach mice to determine if dunes are capable of maintaining suitable habitats and they help dunes regain natural biodiversity that may have been lost.
