What is the anointing and what am I anointed to do? Two of the questions we will answer in this sermon by Pastor John Mattica
The podcast discusses the topics of faith and anointing. It emphasizes the importance of walking in faith and receiving the anointing in order to experience deliverance and the power of God. The speaker explains that the anointing is the power of God upon a person to do what only God can do. It is not limited to ministry, but can be applied to various aspects of life. The anointing is necessary for true impact and transformation. Welcome to CCI fellowships podcast. Thank you for joining us at CCI fellowship We are reaching God reaching each other and reaching our community We pray that this week's message challenges you in your walk with the Lord Causes you to grow in your faith and encourages you in your love for the Word of God Open your Bibles to Luke chapter 4 Praise God I Want to as we are Talking our topics these weeks are centered around What I preached a couple weeks ago about this New and living way that God has Made available to us through Jesus Christ this life of faith. What is this life of faith? What does it encompass last week pastor Jose talked about deliverance that we are? The deliverance is made available to us deliverance from sin deliverance from death deliverance from Poverty and lack deliverance from sickness and disease all the things that that scripture Says is available to us though. They need to be received by faith or Walked in by faith and that is what this life of faith is this new and living way that we need to walk in This week. I am probably next week. I want to talk about the anointing I was going through some notes about this topic that I had done previously it was a Three part series when I had an hour to preach so I have plenty of material to go over But what I want to do today is To We'll talk about the anointing what it is where it comes from We'll answer a couple questions then next week What I want to do is talk about how to get this anointing moving in your life just as Pastor Jose talked about deliverance that it takes faith to walk in that deliverance. We can still walk Bound up, even though freedom has been made available to us, but we have to step into it by faith And so such is the same Regarding the anointing that has been provided to us through the Holy Spirit We need to step into it in faith and receive it so next week Just This is what the plan is God can always change the plan, but the plan is next week that we will will talk specifically about Some steps to get the anointing flowing in our lives, and then I want to have a time of ministry It's not something we do very often. It's been a long time since we've had an open altar and Next week. I believe that that's what we'll do and just spend time focusing on The Lord and opening ourselves up to receive the anointing that he's given us Amen Does that sound like a good plan? Well four of you That's Great the five of us are going to have a great time tell you what Luke 4 verse 18 and 19 This verse to me is very special because this is one of two verses that the Lord gave me when I was 11 to call me into the ministry So I know it applies to more than just Jesus Because it applies to me And I know that it applies to more than just me and Jesus because it applies to all believers who? Have received the Spirit of the Lord through salvation The Spirit of the Lord is upon me Because he has anointed me To preach the gospel to the poor he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted To proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind To set at Liberty those who are oppressed to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord Now we need to understand that we are all called into one of these things We are all anointed to do one or multiple of these things Jesus of course being the embodiment Of everything that was to be seen throughout church history at the birth of the church Some are anointed to preach some are anointed to counsel Some are anointed to evangelize some are anointed to pray for healing Some are anointed in deliverance all are anointed to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord So what is this anointing Jesus said he has anointed me We definitely need to understand that if Christ the Son of God Needed the Holy Spirit to come upon him We know the story of when he was baptized that afterwards a a dove Descended from heaven that the Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove and came upon Jesus Anointing him filling him with power. So also we should Understand that that same anointing Or that the anointing in and of itself is something that God desires for each one of us An example I like to use is That we were at a concert one Christmas that Adriana's dad was playing in it was like a community Orchestra and they had this one lady come and sing and she was singing She was to sing the song Oh Holy Night Now Oh Holy Night of all the Christmas carols is my favorite. I love it. It is a powerful song the gospel is contained within this song Oh Holy Night and And Turns out that this lady was a Christian and so I I sat there with anticipation this isn't just somebody singing a Christmas carol there's somebody that that knows the words that understands the words that has Received the words of this song and as such would sing it in such a way where the anointing would come out Unfortunately, she was not there as a Christian. She was there as a performer and The song had no effect Did she sing it well sure was she a gifted singer. Yes. Did she sing all the right notes? Absolutely. Did it do anything to touch the hearts of people? Nothing? Absolutely, nothing because in that moment it was simply a performance. It wasn't anything else Regularly, I tell the worship team that It's about the anointing God's given us gifts. He's given us talents, but without the anointing we cannot accomplish Anything for the kingdom of God You have people in the world that You know, you know you can watch these talent shows and Somebody will come on there and they'll sing a religious song and one of the judges will say, you know You took us to church today No, not really each that person just sang well, if if that person singing really brought people to church then The broadcast would have ended and mass repentance would break out and people would be coming to the Lord there's a difference between gifting and anointing and Our desire should be as believers that the anointing would accompany everything that we do In Isaiah chapter 10 verse 27 It says it shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder And his yoke from your neck and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing The yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing You know when when I'm sitting there before I come up here I'm always praying Lord Don't let me go up there without your anointing. I Don't want to go up there without your anointing. I am NOT the most gifted Speaker to be able to say all of these things and project the topic of the sermon without God's anointing I'm just not that good There are people who are I've been in places where where the the minister that was there in the pulpit had a very powerful gift to speak eloquently and To speak in such a way that stirred people's emotion He was able to lead the band in such a way where the music swelled at the right time and people felt like they were in God's presence, but in all reality There was no anointing there They were no closer to God at that moment than before they came in to the church, but it all sounded good The words that were spoken were from the Bible But it was all empty because it was void of the anointing It's the anointing that changes people. It's the anointing that brings deliverance. It's the anointing that sets people free When Jesus said the Spirit of the Lord is upon me He didn't say the Spirit of the Lord is with me because this is what he told me to do And So I got to figure out now how to do it He said the Spirit is upon me because he has anointed me or he has empowered me He has given me the ability to do these things To such an end that it has a kingdom impact on people's lives As I said music can stir somebody on the emotional level it can move people it Can have an effect, but it does not have an effect on the spiritual level of man until there is anointing The good thing within this is that the anointing is not just for ministry The anointing goes beyond that it's not just reserved for Preachers and singers and worship leaders and intercessors it is made available to all of us who believe In the Old Testament the anointing oil Was symbolic of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament in James It says that there's anyone sick among you let them come to the elders of the church who will anoint them with oil It's not the oil That does the work. It's the Spirit of God who does the oil is simply a representation the oil is just a something physical that we can fix our eyes on to Represent what is happening in the spiritual? In 1st Samuel 16 verse 13 it says then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the midst of his brothers And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward And Samuel rose and went to Ram The Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward now at that moment David was anointed to be king He was anointed for the task that God had assigned for him to do Was it the time for him to be king yet? No not yet But his and the anointing was upon him from that day forward so that when the time came He was already prepared. He was already empowered. He was already set apart So what is the anointing and am I anointed? What is the anointing and am I anointed? I have The anointing is the power of God upon a person Doing that which only God can do Can we in our own ability? Heal the brokenhearted Can we in our own ability? Liberate people who are bound No Can we in our own ability take somebody that is blind and give them sight? Absolutely not Can we in our own ability preach the gospel to the poor? Yeah But will it do anything for them not much not much But can this anointing be applied to anything else or is it just ministry Are there things that are outside of ministry that God wants to do that only he can do If the anointing is flowing through you well the answer is yes The anointing is the power of God upon a person doing that which only God can do or in order to accomplish God's will that otherwise could not be done by human effort In Exodus 31 verse 2 through 5 we find that This man named Bezalel Whatever the accent goes It says he was anointed with wisdom and knowledge for all manner of workmanship It's very interesting that it uses the word specifically anointed He was anointed in all manner of workmanship and craftsmanship He was anointed to be used by God to fashion all of the things that were to go into the tabernacle All of the gold work all of the silver all of the metallurgy that had to be done for the tabernacle It says that he was anointed for it Well what does that affect somebody on the spiritual level of course they were building the tabernacle where God's presence was going to be in order so that the people could commune with God In 1st Kings chapter 7 verse 14 a similar thing was said of Hiram that he was filled with wisdom and understanding and skill for bronze work Now you would think well that guy's just gifted he's just figured out how to do things Well I don't I don't believe the Bible would use the word filled if it wasn't something unique or intrinsic of the Holy Spirit upon him rather than just somebody that was really good with their hands We can look at people and say well he's really gifted or she's really gifted they're a gifted musician they're a gifted singer they're they're a gifted artist they're they're a gifted teacher they're gifted this they're gifted that but and and that's true we can be gifted In fact the anointing accompanies the gifting that God gives us But without the anointing the gifts and the talents we have will only go so far they will not accomplish everything that God desires In Psalm 18 verse 34 and in Psalm 144 verse 1 David states pretty much the same thing that God has trained him enabled him and by extension anointed him to make war He was a very successful general he was very successful in battle but that all of that success came because God was with him all of that success came because he relied upon the power of God within him to accomplish only what God was able to accomplish How many battles do we read about where they were grossly outnumbered how many battles do we read about where where one strategy would have been better than the other but the Spirit of the Lord directed him in this other strategy because that is where God's power was that is what God's plan was We certainly can go about doing things in our own ability in the area that seems like it's best or better when in reality the Holy Spirit says but but I'm over here this is where the anointing is for you to do this you can you can go this way you'll get to the same destination but you'll get there on your own and if you come over here and go go the way that I want you to go then my anointing will be with you and the result will be much more powerful than you can do on your own To anoint, the word means to pour on, smear all over, rub into with oil. The Psalms say how good and excellent it is for brothers to dwell together in unity. It is like the oil that flowed down from the head of Aaron and through his beard and to the border of his garments. That's a lot of oil. That's not like we do when we pray for people and we just get a little oil on our finger and touch your forehead. It's like here's a gallon of oil and we're going to pour it on you. That texture, that same thing, that amount of oil that in the natural just looks all sticky and like can you imagine being covered in oil? I know there are people that really like olive oil, but I don't know anybody that really wants it poured over their head to the extent that it soaks all of their clothing. But that level of anointing, that same picture is what God has given us through the Holy Spirit. Second question, am I anointed? We need to understand a few other things. The word Christ is not just part of Jesus' name. Some of you may know this, that the word Christ is actually translated, the anointed one. Jesus, the anointed one. In fact, in Christ, the phrase in Christ appears eighty-nine times in the New Testament. So if we take what that word means, what that name means, that designation of who Jesus was or which Jesus, because Jesus was a popular name, which Jesus they were talking about. It wasn't Jesus the son of Ben, Jesus the son of Jesus, the one who worked in this. It was Jesus the Christ. So we take the definition and we read it as Jesus the anointed one. So when we're reading verses that say in Christ, then it is we are in the anointed one. We cannot be in the anointed one without being in the anointing. It comes together. We cannot be in Christ and not be anointed. Ephesians 2 verse 10 says that we were created in Christ for good works. We can read that as we were created in the anointed one for good works, which means that we are anointed to do good works. 2 Corinthians 5 verse 17. If anyone be in Christ, he is a new creation. All things are passed away. All things have become new. If anyone be in the anointed one, he is a new creation, thus anointed. 2 Corinthians 1 verse 21 and 22. He who establishes us with you in Christ or in the anointed one has anointed us. He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God. So we know that the anointing comes from God. But we are established within the anointed one so that we can be anointed. I just keep thinking of a big barrel of oil. If you get in the barrel, you're in the oil. It is all over you. There is no part of you where that oil is not. In 1 John 2 verse 20 and 27, it says, You have an anointing from the Holy One. And it goes on to say, This anointing will teach you. This anointing will teach you. In John 14 verse 26, he says, The Holy Spirit will teach you all things. And in 1 John, you have an anointing. So John draws a direct correlation between the Holy Spirit and the anointing, and in effect uses it interchangeably. The Holy Spirit, the anointing. The anointing, the Holy Spirit. I think we can all agree that we have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of us. Scripture is very clear that when we receive Christ as our Lord and Savior, that his Spirit comes to dwell inside of us. Now he can dwell inside of us, or he can also empower us while he is there. Jesus said, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to do these things. So then he went about and did those things. Would Jesus have been anointed even if he didn't do those things? Sure, but he would have been not doing what he was anointed to do. He grew up under the tradecraft of his father, of course. His earthly father. He could have continued doing that, but he would not have lived out his days in the anointing, in the power of God that was meant for him to live in and function in. So Luke 4.18, as I said, applies by extension through Christ to all of those who now have the Spirit dwelling in them. The other question I started with is, am I anointed? The better question is, what am I anointed to do? Because we believe in Jesus, the Anointed One, we are in Christ, we are in the Anointed One, therefore we are anointed. So it's not so much, am I anointed, but rather, what am I anointed to do? In John 17, verse 4, Jesus praying in the garden says, looks up to the Father and says, I have glorified you here on earth. I have finished the work which you have given me to do. I did the assignment that you sent me here to do. I did what you had anointed me to do. I think a lot of times we find ourselves in the church, not so much not doing what we are anointed to do, but doing what we are anointed to do without the anointing. Because we don't realize the extent of the power of the Holy Spirit within us. Acts chapter 10, verse 38, it says, How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. He was anointed to accomplish these things, but yet he still had to go about, he still had to proclaim, he still had to pray, he still had to declare, he still had to go about doing the good, but it was the anointing within him that empowered him to accomplish these things. Now let's take this and broaden our understanding of it to apply to whatever God has called us to do. The thing is that you must be doing the right assignment in order to be flowing in the right anointing. But did you know that you can be anointed to be a parent? You can be anointed to be a businessperson. You can be anointed to be a teacher. You can be anointed to do whatever. My father would always say that he was not a Christian businessman. He was a Christian who happened to be a businessman. If you take grammatically Christian businessman, Christian is an adjective and not the focal point. The focal point is businessman. He says, no, I'm a Christian first. This is my identity. He was an anointed businessman. His department in the company that he worked for, they didn't know what to do without him. In fact, when they moved locations, the whole design of the new location they were going to centered around what he decided things should be, where they should be, and how they should flow within the building. He was not the president of the organization. He was not the vice president of the organization. He was not any of the ones that you would consider in top leadership on the board of directors or anything else. He was a man who believed God and flowed in the anointing that God gave him in order to accomplish the task that he was assigned to do. And he affected many lives that worked under him and were under his leadership. There were people that would leave and go to another job and would say, can we just take you with us? Can you just come work where I'm going? Because there's just something different about you. There's something not the same as other people that is about you. And that gives him the opportunity to preach to them the gospel. You see, no matter what we do and no matter what assignment we have, it should all end in the same thing. How to affect people's lives for the kingdom. And so that anointing, whatever it is, whatever it looks like, you can be an anointed baker. Baking mom sitting here. She bakes well. But the baking mom business in the gifts that God has given her to bake and to make these delicious desserts can be used as a tool to impact people for the kingdom of God. But just the anointing is not just reserved for the impact in the people of God. It's throughout the whole thing. You see, it's in the same moment when she's mixing all of those things together. When she's baking those things because those things are going to be used for the kingdom. It's not like God says, I want you to do these things figure it out by yourself. And whenever it comes time to minister to somebody, then then I'll step in and I'll join you. And then you can minister to people through that he's with you through the whole process. He empowers you through the whole process. So the question is not, am I anointed, but rather, what is my assignment? And if I'm doing my assignment, then I know that the anointing is there to go along with it. When Jesus was ministering to the woman at the well, the disciples came up. She had gone back into town. The disciples came up to him and tried to get him to eat. And he says, my food, my meat in the New King, in the King James, it says, my sustenance comes from doing the will of the one who sent me. I'm sustained by doing the will of the one who sent me. This anointing empowers us. It sustains us. It makes it possible for us to do the things that God has called us to do, whether that's in business, whether that's in just whatever it is you are doing. Put your own job in that situation. He will anoint you to do what you are called to do. Yeah, but you know, I'm just a housewife. Yeah, you can be an anointed housewife. I'm just this. You can be an anointed that. It's not a just this. I don't see how what I'm doing can be used as a tool for the kingdom. You know, maybe my job is just how God provides for me. Nothing is wasted with God. Nothing is wasted with God. And if the spirit of God lives inside of us, then the anointing of God dwells there ready, willing, and able to empower us to do what he has called us to do. The sad thing is that many times, even in doing the right assignment, we find ourselves doing it in our own ability. We find ourselves saying, OK, I got this. I can put this recipe together. I can throw this stuff in the oven. Something good is going to come out of it. And then, OK, God, now that I'm going to deliver these things, let your anointing be upon me. So that I can share your gospel. No, it's through the whole thing. As a parent, you ask God every morning, Lord, help me in the anointing that you have given me to parent these children that you have blessed me with. Help me. Give me insight. Give me ideas. Give me creativity in the job that I've been given. See, he wants to accompany us in every aspect of our lives. But again, as we started within this trajectory is that it has to be by faith that we receive it. It has to be by faith that we allow it to flow in us, that we tap into it, that we make it work for us. It's available. The question is, do we want it? There's so much of God available to us, but do we want it? There are people that walk around bound, not free, not delivered, simply because by faith they don't receive what is afforded to them, what is provided to them. So what are you going to do? I want to challenge you in my instruction to you this weekend as the worship team comes up. My instruction for you this week is that in your time of study and in your time of prayer, you ask the Holy Spirit, what am I anointed to do? What am I anointed to do? And ask him to help you see how to apply that in your life and in the things that you're doing. Ask him to show you how to employ the anointing within your assignment so that it has an impact on people. Not just, oh, that was nice, yeah, it was good, but really allow God to use you and the anointing that he has placed in you to affect other people. There was a popular song when we were growing up that the words of it were, anointing, fall on me. Let the power of the Holy Ghost fall on me. Well, the reality is because the Spirit lives in us, it doesn't have to fall on us. It flows out from inside of us. Jesus says the rivers of living water will flow from within us because of the Holy Spirit, because of the anointing. Let's stand together. Father, we praise you. We magnify your name. We pray, Lord God, that you would help us to understand more regarding this anointing. This anointing that you have made available to us, help us to see in every aspect of our lives that you have anointed us for success. You have anointed us, Lord God, to complete things. You have anointed us, Lord God, to accomplish. You have anointed us, Lord God, to affect people's lives on the spiritual level. Father, may we see as we go about our daily routines, our daily responsibilities, that in every aspect, in every place of our lives, your Holy Spirit is there waiting to empower us to do these things. Father, may we accept it by faith, and may we learn to flow in it. May we learn to live in it. May we learn to function in it. In the name of Jesus. Amen. Amen. We hope to see you or hear from you soon. Blessings.
