I live with diabetes all day, all night. So, how do these people make it to 90, right? They're diabetic and all that stuff. So, let me tell you, age is just a number and nothing proves it more than my 90-year-old diabetic patients who are surprisingly healthy and thriving. Compared to someone who was already like just 45 or 50 and already lost their kidneys, they lost their extremities, they have heart disease, they have heart attacks. How do these 90-year-olds do it? As a healthcare professional, I have observed a few common features that they typically share. Believe it or not, these features are quite surprisingly basic and easy to follow. By developing some of these habits, you too could witness significant changes in your overall well-being and make it to 90. That's the goal, right? Rather than retiring to a sedentary lifestyle or relying solely on medications, aging healthily is a matter of taking care of yourself in small but consistent ways. So, let's explore these common features and get inspired to lead a healthy life irrespective of the age. As a healthcare professional, like I said, an endocrinologist, my primary concern is the well-being of my patients and always pay attention to what they're doing. One of the most crucial factors I always pay attention to is their blood pressure because we check their blood pressure every time. It never ceases to amaze me how often a 90-year-old patient has a blood pressure in the low normal range, hovering around 120 over 70. While this may be a routine reading for a healthy young person in their 30s and whatnot, but it's relatively normal for an elderly patient. Most of the time, by people like in their 50s, 60s, 70s, they start getting blood pressure in the 140, 150, 160 range. So, it serves as a testament to the changes that our bodies undergo as we age and the effects of high blood pressure that it may have on our overall health. As we age, maintaining good health becomes more important than ever. Genetics certainly play a role in individual health. There are certain things we can do to help ensure a long and healthy life. One of the indicators of overall health is our cholesterol levels, specifically HDL, which some people call a good cholesterol. In my experience, many of my 90-year-old patients who remain relatively healthy have high levels of HDL. To attain this level of cholesterol, serious daily exercise is often necessary. But of course, some people are simply genetically lucky and their HDL is high and they're lucky, right? But for most people, it takes consistent effort, including me. I am the unlucky, the worst person ever when it comes to genetics. My HDL goes low if I don't exercise, down to below 40. Unbelievable. I keep it at 60 and I work out like crazy to keep it at 60. So, for those people who aspire to be a 90-year-old diabetic without issues, keeping HDL at least above 50 for men and 60 for women should be a top priority. Third thing I notice among 90-year-old patients, especially one particular trait that stands out to me, is their outlook on life. These individuals tend to be some of the most laid-back and pleasant people you will ever meet. Now, as you know, some people get older, they start getting grumpier, but not everybody. They exude a sense of calm and contentment, I like to say, that is hard to describe. What's even more remarkable is that despite the trials and tribulations that come with aging, they don't harbor any bitterness towards life or anyone else. Instead, they approach each day with a positive attitude and deep appreciation for the simple things in life, like a beautiful sunset, a good book, a cup of coffee with a friend. It is truly inspiring to witness a gentle reminder of what is truly important in life when I see these people. When it comes to healthy elderly individuals, one of their standout traits is the lack of medications they take. They don't have many medications, like I see some people have 40 medications on their list. But this behavior signals towards a greater appreciation for the natural healing properties found in herbs and natural foods that these people typically consume.
