We are brian Trent and sean and we want to thank you for listening today as we dive into the world of sports Music life or whatever our remaining brain cells can come up with today And we want to welcome you all to our first ever edition of the rts podcast And we're so excited to have you here And we want to welcome you all to our first ever edition of the rts podcast We're going to jump right into the major league baseball all-star game, which happens tuesday night But first up is the home run derby guys on monday at eight o'clock and We have eight viable contestants and a lot of people that didn't Enter, but I think the matchups are pretty good uh one Is lewis robert against annie rutschman two is alonzo versus rodriguez Betts versus vlad jr and garcia versus Arendzorana So, uh the ones you'd be in lewis robert from the white socks. What do you guys think about him? Well question first are they seating me is my home runs they have at the break Is that how they're seated? basically That would be my my question That I don't know because I remember saying that vlad jr only has like 12 Yeah, rutschman only has 11 Okay So but I think alonzo's got more than robert right I'm, pretty sure alonzo has 25 the same amount. Okay and garcia. He's got more than betts, right? He uh betts has 23 Vlad has 13 garcia has 21. So betts has more than garcia. So it looks like it is based on number of home runs. Okay So That was something I was curious about with how they do it because I've I want to stay in the past I've seen them where they haven't done that Or just spent some kind of random drawing and You know Yeah, plus with I mean with what rodriguez did last year in the home run derby like How could he not and he's in seattle? Like I don't see why he wouldn't be the I guess de facto number one Yeah Robert's hit what like 10 in the last month That guy's kind of shot up there a lot. That dude is a beast. That dude is unbelievable Unbelievable I mean, I still think the old polar bear pete alonzo will probably be in the finals. I'm sure Dude, dude, throw that piece there It was uh It was kind of kind of funny when he was talking shit and you know kind of got paid back I enjoyed it Well, I sent that remember that I sent that screenshot of their record since he said that and it's like Worst record faith that a's have a better record than them right now. It didn't motivate them so to speak all right, so All right. So, all right. Well, let's uh, all right, so We've we've figured out the home run totals are in based on the seed so Let's do a little mock Of who's going to win? Yeah, okay. All right key. Yeah, I don't know Yeah, well, I mean I know a lot of that's about rhythm and stuff. And so I mean I don't know man Robert I don't I don't see robert necessarily being somebody going out there throwing up a lot of home runs, but Let's say the last one but I mean I don't know. I just I don't know I would say my my left nut has a bit more home runs than natalie rutschman's this year, but Maybe he'll get going. I don't know Yes, maybe that's what he needs Okay I don't think he wanted to really put up a huge number but again Okay, so ryan you're going to take robert for round one. Oh, yeah. Okay. Oh, yeah All right Huh No, it's in seattle Seattle Yeah, yeah. Yeah first first all-star game in seattle since 2001 2001 when cal rip cal ripken jr. Is the mvp of that game? Yeah, yeah the single year the mariners won 112 games, yeah I thought that Yeah Then they messed it up. So, all right, I will go with robert. Uh, I think it'll be close Uh, I agree with t with Robert, I think he's more like a line drive hitter, you know and then And adly I I don't I can't watch orioles games Uh, unless it's on beginning Sometimes because of the blackout because where I live so I don't get to see adly Adly, all right Is Yeah, I don't think much but just uh simply my instinct kind of telling me that All right, right on the blackout it doesn't black out any games on beginning does it I don't know. No No only, uh on apple it won't play if it's the Like, you know braves against nationals and it's the apple tv, you know, you wouldn't see it, right? It's fucking stupid. Yeah But anyways, all right. So now we got the two-seed alonzo going against the hometown hero julio, rodriguez the seventh seed ryan Who you got? Uh, I guess i'll go polar bear I don't want to Okay, why? He's won it twice in the last four years and I don't know he just Y'all were talking about line drive hitters. That's kind of julio too in a way a little bit But I just think alonzo he knows what to expect. He has the stamina and I don't know if he can do that. I don't want to say that but yeah, but I mean Yeah, I mean, but julio did put on that show last year and put himself on the mat So Oh for sure You think so? Yeah, that'll be the closest one for sure. I think so too. All right, so t who you got? Hey ron, I don't feel like ron was wrong to do those points there. Um It's tough man, I kind of want to go to rodriguez though be at home be a little more hyped up um Londo hasn't really been hitting the ball well of weight kind of thing Maybe the home run derby helps to get a rhythm or a groove or something But yeah, i'm gonna take i'm gonna take rodriguez I think Okay, yeah, I think it's gonna be close and like yeah line drive hitter as well, but Uh, and a lot of those that compete so i mean it'd be a huge upset but I don't know the men the men seem like they're a little off this year So I think that would carry over to that too, and then i'm trying to find a problem in that No, throw it again. Yeah You know, it's like okay It's like i'm sorry you closed your eyes and you hit the ball really hard one time. Good job, you know So, all right, so i'm gonna go She's picking a new york met is like picking a dallas cowboy, I don't know if I can do it, you know Yeah, i'm gonna go with I'm gonna go with the hometown kid Okay, i'm gonna go rodriguez I think he's gonna be ant um I think it might hurt him in round two But I think the first round he might put on like a show, you know So, all right, so now we have mookie betts the three seed against vlad Guerrero jr. The sixth seed i'm gonna take I love mookie betts And I like vlad jr man Let's see. Oh I don't know. I think i'm gonna go with Vlad jr. I just think that he's been he's only got 1200 Just think that he's been he's only got 12 home runs, but I think like you guys are like he was saying about uh Alonso getting in the rhythm now that you know, maybe the home run derby helps him. So i'm going to go with vlad jr I'm gonna do the same. Um He's just one of those guys where he gets going he gets going And uh got a lot of pop too And uh Yeah, I think that's kind of more of his kind of competition style kind of thing like I don't know It's just how he's one of his dad was that guy That's kind of like you put him in a home run derby kind of have to like the kind of like his eyes Once the lights once the lights get bright He kind of uh, I know he put on a show a few years back and off. I know he's gonna do that this year, but It's kind of hard to not make sure i'm not going out there and have a good first round All right, right on well three for three give me my daddy All right, that's the rts suite on that one All right, okay, and then we just don't know I don't know if Ricky Betts is gonna say kind of like the A home run derby kind of guy. Well, that's why I was surprised. Yeah, uh, what'd you say Ryan 23 for Betts? I mean I I love I love Mookie Betts man. Like I would love to see him like in an Atlanta Braves uniform You know just I know it'll never happen But he's one he's one of those guys that you would just instantly want on the team No doubt, you know 150 games a year runs everything out no complaints and he Again, he's one of those guys that when the lights come on. He's just like Show time, you know, I like him too. Except when he played the Braves. Yeah Yeah but we're not going to talk about that we're not going to talk about that because That's for another discussion. All right. So t you're up four seed Garcia versus Rosarina the five seed I just I guess watching it and just watch those swings. I know he has opposite field power, too. Um Yeah, just kind of I don't know I like that I just kind of like the youngster All right, he swings a little too I don't know flat or low in certain swings. So you get in that competition like that You're not seeing the right kind of pitches and everything that you're gonna get a lot of line drives like right upstairs, too So yeah, I feel like he falls in that category a lot. Yeah, he's a he's a good gap hitter left center right center Yep, I got I got Adelie as well Yeah, that dude he's been so awesome He's been kind of struggling so i'm wondering i'm not as sure as I probably would have been a month ago But uh, I still think he's you know got the Got the goods to win the first round at least All right, and I am on board with that as well Yep, so that's another sweep. Okay. All right, so we would have Speaking of come on with it Yeah, all right, so All right, the second round potential matchups, let's say Vlad jr against lewis roberts because we had um Two to one vote on that with robert winning. So who we got there Robert versus vlad jr round two I got vlad vlad taking it. Yeah, I like him All right, me too i'm on a vlad sweep I think that's another one that's going to be close But guys that have been in home run derbies before know kind of like how to pace that's why More I think about it the alonzo So But anyway Oh, actually actually my bad I did that wrong the majority vote would actually put robert versus rodriguez Yeah, same keep it the same clean sweep Man No, I would take robert in that sense I would i'm gonna do this actually Yeah, I think I probably would too you go robber really I don't know who's that Just to see him going past the first round Like all that adrenaline Like he uses all that adrenaline up Maybe he's just kind of gassed made it like halfway through the round or whatever All right. I still think julio would win but uh, all right, so two to one on robert. Okay, so then we would have garcia versus vlad jr That's a great one, yeah Vlad yeah, me too Well, I guess i'll just experience the Yep Experience in the competition. Yeah, but I think I think that could be the little dark horse Is garcia because nobody really knows him, you know, unless you call fancy or where you guys live You know But I don't know. Yeah, I I agree. I think that's where experience comes in. Um But I think that that one will be a high scoring second round Right, I think so, okay, so All right. So then we will have uh, lewis roberts first vlad for the title I gotta stick with vlad All right, yeah, I will too yeah I like him in this. I think he shines I do like robert though making a good showing He's probably the least known guy in this Oh for sure, yeah, he's probably he'll he'll be the one with probably the least pressure he's probably the least Yeah, but probably still the least known so I could see him as on a good show I think well, I mean the hummer. I love the hummer derby like I you know, you have to tape it if you're not there, but I just love watching it because I mean I've seen the swings that they put and it's just like some of them. It's just like so smooth, you know, it's like like I didn't see that's why I think I would have loved to seen olsen because he would just fucking moonshot but Yeah, well, I mean remember when he was in it a few years ago, yeah, and he hit like Fifty five percent sixty percent of his home runs to right field. He was hitting everything oppo field, man And it was just like true power right there Like I'd rather him save it for the real game Yeah, I agree on that So i'm kind of glad they're not in it i'm like i'll save it. I understand but save it. It's cool So Yeah, they need to worry about another division title and the world series and um You know Let someone in mlb the show win the homerun derby with a break, you know so But all right, so okay. So vlad Is the winner of the homerun derby? All right. So then the game on tuesday, how much do you guys actually watch it? Yeah, I usually do um Kind of depends like kind of depends on how like, you know, which way it starts to go with Like if it all starts losing then i'm probably not going to pay attention that much Because I know it has everything but I know it's home field advantage in the world series. So And the nl doesn't usually do well in the all-star game Yep Yep, maybe now that they've got adjusted to the dh a little bit better Yeah Isn't that weird though, like you don't see bumps anymore. It's like the way they freak out like You like that video a clip I sent with um Otani or uh to cheese catching that soft line drive like the announcer's freaking out That's like how they act when the sacrifice bunt happens It's like what or the only time you'll see it is like in the 10th inning, you know, or like the extra innings, you know So, but yeah last nl win in the all-star game was 2012 Wow, that's gonna say yeah, we've lost like what that's 10 in a row so And there are a lot of them are close games, um, but like you think like Wouldn't you think there'd be more offense in all in the mlb all-star games like, you know The nba with their fucking nba jam style all-star game. It's like 200 points for each team. Yeah, and it's like for the all-star game, it's like I think the highest in the last 10 years combined score was 14 runs And that was like an eight to six game So I mean, they're entertaining but it's like one to pick, you know, the pitchers can't get in rhythm, you know The batters can't get in rhythm. They can't you know, basically every time they come up it's a new pitcher, you know, so you That's where there's like no rhythm with it there. But yeah I don't know when I look at the teams. I kind of like the nl Starters a little more I do this fan. I mean i'm not gonna play obviously he got voted to start but he won't be playing neither will judge So take take the other two out, you know Yeah, yeah, well, I mean, yeah, you're putting the whole al against the um atlanta braves plus the other two that are playing you know Yeah, isn't that crazy those numbers It's just the only thing is I think olsen just strikes out more than freddie does but olsen has a ton of walks He's not as good as a hitter at screaming. I don't think No, he's just got such raw power though. Like the two two of his home runs last week were just like Throwing his hands out to the outside pitch and just hitting it off. Oh, and it was just like He's like, you know staying there watching and he's like, oh wow I did it down there. Yeah So I do agree. I think ultimate is the way to go, but I just know freeman in the leadership, you know Oh, of course, you know, it's like well, I mean, it's like When all the leaders leave, you know, like chipper retires or brian mccain goes to that What yankees first and then astros or was it astros? But anyways, he was just you know, frank core all these guys Not sure of that thing, but at least kind of chipper kind of gave it to freddie, you know And said you're you're the leader of this team, you know when you retired So yeah, freddie, you know freddie. It's your team, you know, I don't know that when freddie left the defense That's anyone on the team, you know, I don't know who I would say who's the locker room leader for the braves. I don't I don't know you know I feel like I'd be a coonie by now but It's tough to tell especially to get all those new faces in there like that for this year and such so but I don't know. They all their mission. Well, that's that's what matters. Yeah, I think yeah, I mean you could just tell they all like each other and they all root for each other, you know, just watching the the ant the dugout when they uh show a base hit or stolen base or you know, it's like Just staying on matt olsen when he hit. Um that one to right field the other night against I think it was uh The fuck was it? I think it was against the fish and um No, it was a series before that Anyways, but anyways, so it rolls to the wall and he's running, you know, and olsen's not Fleet of foot, you know and he gets there and it shows the camera on him and he's like pointing to the dugout And he's like i'm fast, you know, and everybody, you know, ronald, you know How ronald does the handlebars when he does the stolen base? That's what he was doing and shit like that So yeah, I mean, I think they just all mesh well together and I think they hold each other accountable and plus Schnitt is a great skipper man. He just like gives everybody a chance to Prove himself. I mean arcia pollard. He gives everybody and then the coaches like the bench coaches just fucking from South to sano to sizer to kranich. It's just walt weiss You know, there's washington e.y. I mean, there's a ton of great coaches on that team Is Oh, yeah easily and then it's a good thing and it's like it's awesome because all the braves core players are young And they and they take in coaching, you know, there's not like oh I got to the big leagues. It's like they take coaching like michael harris his Within like six weeks of him getting called up last year. They changed his batting Stance, you know lowered his hands, you know, and then boom took off, you know, so it's like if you want coaching, I mean It's just so much fun to watch him right now but Hopefully they keep it up Yeah, man so keep it up and We'll see someone's gonna make a run. So we just got injuries and everything else. We'll see who's gonna be We will see This is baseball. So it's it's it's about to happen. So don't worry about it yeah, I mean it's a long season and it's like the players that get hurt it's like it's good for them because I mean, I hate to say injuries but good early in the year it's like you get all the young players up, you know, and it's like you get them to taste like you know ass and you know dodd and uh schmitz schuster uh You know you get all you know grissom if he ever gets up, but you get them all reps You know, that's all baseball is you need reps and they see what it takes to make it up there I think that helps and then like once they expand the rosters in a couple months, then you can give everybody some more days off and not Lose that race with the dodgers or diamondbacks whoever for that home field advantage 73 games after the all-star break. So I know baseball could go so I know but I can't believe it's already the fucking all-star break man, like this shit fucking flies by Yeah That's awesome. Okay, so you were talking today about uh Earlier about the pitching being different due to the pitch clock Why do you why do you think so? I mean, I just I don't know if I think pitchers just really like to take this time man The dominant ones you watch them you know, and they're they have that clock in the back of their head now, I think and I think it's affecting some guys, you know, I think obviously I mean shit honestly, it could be the The substance checks on the ball too, you know, they do every inning could be that too I mean, but I just think they have that pitch clock in the back of their head a lot and I don't think you've seen like as many dominant pitchers. Like if you look at the ones that were drafted early on you know, it's probably been like a 60-40 mix of you know, 60% of them still being pretty dominant, but 40% of them have been trash, you know so I don't know. I mean or just like it does six innings Yeah, yeah You know, I think the league I think I know braves have I think one complete game and I think the league leader is three Yeah, I might be off but still yeah, it's like well, it's like that stat with like 200 innings pitch from a pitcher now It's like a couple years ago uh I think it was like three years ago. There were only four pitchers that made 200 innings and it's like And that's why you don't see any 20 game winners now anymore, you know, Kyle Wright got lucky last year just because you know, it just worked out that way, but you know Not even Otani I think got 20. I think he got 18 or something like that So if you only got the top 25 just kind of roughly the top five Tell me who's having a good year this year Alcantara for the Marlins. He's he's doing shitty This year uh losing record Yeah For for lander. I don't know what his thoughts are with the mess, but he hasn't been near as effective as he was last year He's got a losing record. Yeah Um urias with the dodgers I think he's doing decent. He's been injured a lot though. Yeah Dylan sees been off and on for the white socks Yes, if you could start how about number five alec manoa Did you see his Statline from his rookie ball Yeah, like he gave up like 11 runs in rookie ball. Yeah, and then they moved him up to double a And then he got better. So, you know, of course my dumb ass will pick him up for a starting spot. Why not? Yeah, because see I mean it even impacts. Um um Fantasy because it's like like Me all I go through the weekly, you know matchups and count how many starting pitchers I have like thinking. Okay, like Okay, i'm gonna get x amount of wins out of this and now it's like going through a whole week like last week I think I got two wins from all my starting pitchers and it's like what the fuck I think I got three and I was like damn out of like What eight 16 starts or something? Or however many it was I was like damn This week trinton's kicking my ass. So oh Oh, no No way dude, no way last week I was last week I was up seven Shit oh yeah, I think I got one home run tonight But only one Yeah, I just I went with the two tampa relievers i'm not even see I don't even have a home run tonight Nothing. Uh-huh. Oh, I got a win. I got a win. You know what I kind of compare pitching to in uh, and in fantasy baseball is That used to be the running back of fantasy how How it was in football in fantasy football used to be all about the running back That that used to be the formula for winning in baseball fantasy Uh baseball was you had the best pitching staff. I don't know one draft. I had first five picks up at all starters I had a monster like Pitching lineup and I had kind of shit shit Players on on offense, but they did good enough and I picked up guys off the waiver That carried me and I won the league that year, you know, but I had five great starters and they all came through So it's not like that anymore, you know No, it's not. I think the pitch clock does affect the pitchers some especially those guys that um You know Stay like a Scherzer where If he wants to he his focus is to dominate you three pitches no matter what strike you out he's the fuck out of there But sometimes I know like he'll take his time to mess with the batter just like just to throw a little bit off And then I guess and ron is not wrong too I think where Some of those other pitchers like to take their time. They like to fuck around a little bit Playing mind games and mental games with you And I just don't think that they're as dominant with the pitch clock being in play And I think that I think the batter maybe has taken the advantage say of the pitch clock because they're able to Maybe not dick around as well, you know You know reaccept my gloves and all that back off deep breath or something then step back in they're ready So therefore the pressure is now on the pitcher to get something off right I know it can work both ways So I just don't know the pitchers that the pitching side of it has too much advantage yet to the to it. Yeah I think base running is definitely benefited from the pitch clock because you know Because what is uh, what two bereavements as they call it, right? or disengagement two disengagements per So, I mean it's like okay you throw over twice and you know You used to see like four or five freaking throw overs before a pitch is even thrown But could you imagine how many times pitchers would throw over at ronald If you know if they didn't have that and so you can easily Take a little slightly big lead Force a throw over and then you know on that after that second one man first movement. Boom, you're gone, you know No matter even if the pitcher does a slide step You still basically have a running lead, you know, so I don't know I think I like the smoothness of the game Like I think the braves game yesterday is two hours 45 minutes You know, yeah, I think that's that's been great. Like the hitting like that the hitting is definitely Kind of like what you're saying with like um with football like, you know, usually in the beginning of the year, uh Offenses are you know better than defenses? Because you know new film everybody's got their new trick plays Yada, yada. So I think that like the hitters. Yeah, like you said, they're just timing it up So I think you know, like you said they can't change like he said you can't change things up you know like because you could easily take like A little extra like a kimley jansen twerk or spend a little extra time spinning the ball in the glove making them think you know like so I think Eventually, they'll catch up. But I mean I don't think the quality of play is just I think it's improved big time like I mean Yeah, now they got you know big inning which is awesome But if you're watching good baseball, it doesn't matter who's on you know Because there's some really good players on a lot of teams There really is yeah, definitely helped a lot for sure I uh And I like those old olympic games the way it's been for sure I think that was the idea was it was speed it up and then to try to make it more entertaining which I mean If you're watching playoff baseball and you get a Dominant pitching message going on. I feel like that's pretty darn entertaining If you got one of those in the regular season, maybe not so much because you're you know when you It's baseball. So it's still kind of a slow slow thing. So if you're gonna sit there and watch a zero zero game for Eight and a half not hitting it's like okay, but Playoffs, it's like it gets it gets intense because it's like ooh you know in A walk and all of a sudden they get one run the other pitch is being so dominant I think the same principle is still played in the regular season, but I have enjoyed I have enjoyed a lot of the of the season so far being a little bit more on the The batter friendly side I should say I just a little more often for stuff like that And by the way, give it up to ryan's boy janson for making the all-star team Like i'm surprised he doesn't get a pitch caught violation Right, he got one he got one two and one game like right off the bat And then I haven't really heard him get one since but Apparently people are calling around about two just getting bossed off the trade and they said they're not going to but we'll see about that I think eventually they will rangers is blue too Yeah, they just a lot of run That Yeah, that that fucking rangers game astros game the other day was fucking crazy after the sick nothing It was that was fucking wild after my day was over it really was yeah, I saw the highlights from it Is lord? Rangers both got as worse than ours. Yeah They're terrible they could They could probably have the same record as us if they didn't their bullpen didn't blow after game, right? That was crazy, man. We have the record we do in our bullpen still. I mean, it's been better. No, you're wrong, but It's a little shaky, man. Yeah You gotta tie that up before we get the playoffs Well, see that's the thing too. It's like the starting pitching like you rely on your bullpen like every single day To where as it used to be like a verlander you knew was going to go nine innings Scherzer was going to go nine innings, you know, and it was like okay, if you needed to you brought you brought someone in like With one out in the in the eighth, you know to get a couple guys out like the lefty lefty matchup, you know And then you go to the closer or it would just be a complete game Even if it was like one run two run or three runs given up you would still see complete games and now it's like like The other night like last night they took soroka out After four and two thirds and it's like man, let the kid throw that's like how they get fucking Through this shit and that's why their arms break down because they don't fucking throw all the time. You know, they don't have that same Fucking throwing mentality is like nolan ryan bob gibson those fuckers pitch Two complete games in a day, you know 350 Yeah, 350 show uh innings or pitches. No problem, you know But that was also the way that it's all also the way it used to be and since they heard since they um Um Gone through and started using more like the shorter innings and stuff like that to try to give them more longevity and all that It's kind of how it's kind of how it's done, but you're right though with the bullpen and stuff. They're used every night a lot and what A lot of it at least i've seen with the parade it's like stop walking people like you're gonna you're gonna get hit but like I mean sometimes They're not even close well, are you talking about that extra inning game the other night with the two intentional walks like a little bit of that but also Um, this is stuff i've seen from other previous games stuff Hold it there wendy. I don't know. I don't I don't like him, but he ripped the shit out of this ball. Yeah, he did Just see it How about extra velocity 111.5? Yeah, he ripped the hell out of the ball, man I got two for shit. Yeah, I didn't have to go far but it went out He got the he got the With 26 home runs He's come back a pretty respectable year honestly, he really honestly has 13 nothing 13 nothing orioles Oh, yeah Yeah, I think 19 hits for him something setarito started He's horrible, yeah Yeah You yeah, that was a fucking laser that lindor hit Uh-oh.
