We thank you for this study in Ecclesiastes, and we thank you for Solomon being open and honest, sincerely honest with us, to open up his heart to everyone, and talking about really the different philosophies of life, and that is everything really empty and vain? And the answer we know in our hearts is that it's not, and we're going to find out today in Chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes. We thank you for your word, dear Lord. We thank you that your word is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, divides to the soul and the spirit joints and the marrow, the discerner of the motives and intents of the heart. And Ecclesiastes is a study of the hearts, and as we study the study of the book of Ecclesiastes, we're going to realize that God wants us to not only think with our minds, but also with our hearts. And help us to do that well, this day, and pray your blessings upon David's teaching. Pray these things to Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And I think that one of the major issues in all of life is the fact that there is untruth going on, and there's a lot of fabricated data that's being produced even in medicine and in all walks of life. So now we want to make sure that we have a thing called a discerning spirit and heart, and God is going to help us do that through his Holy Spirit. So it's a travel and adventure of life, but we get to do that with the Lord. If you leave him out, then you end up seeing all is vanity, all is empty, all is meaningless. So what we're going to do in this whole study of Ecclesiastes is to know who we are in Christ, and then accept who we are in Christ, that's by faith, and then be who we are in Christ. That's the big issue. Moving what we know here to here. That's a big challenge, isn't it? Because all of us have doubts, and you're not alive if you don't have doubts, because there are lots of promises that God makes. There are 7,494 promises in Scripture, and God aims to keep every one of them. That's a lot. I got that from Chuck Springall. I didn't count it. David? Are you good? Yes, we are. Yes. We prayed you in, so now you have to... I thought you were still here. Well, I am. I am. So you need to stop me. So I'm the antagonist here. No, no, no. You're here. So we're going to take advantage of this. Okay. Okay. I understand that the substitute teacher last week handed out the answers. Yeah. Well, I'm not the substitute teacher. I don't hand out the answers. We're going to go through this together, and we'll discover the answers together. So what really matters when you see God in life? Finally, Solomon takes a brief respite from his position at looking at life under the sun, and he actually looks above the sun for just a little bit. And so that's what Ecclesiastes 3. There was one author or one commentator I was reading that felt like he goes down a fatalistic path here. I didn't agree with him, so I'm not going to go down a fatalistic path, okay? I'm not going to say he doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm just saying I'm not agreeing with him, okay? For what that's worth. I am going to present that, so after you tell me. Okay. Okay. You want to hear the fatalism part? Hang around. Just stick around. Yeah. So anyway, Ecclesiastes 3, when you see God in life, seeing God in the events of life is the first statement. There's an appointed time for everything, and there's a time for every event under heaven, a time to give birth, a time to die, a time to plant, a time to uproot, a time to kill, a time to heal, a time to tear down and build up, weep and laugh, mourn and dance, throw stones and gather stones, embrace and shun embracing, search and give up as lost, keep and throw away, tear apart and sew together, be silent and speak, love and hate. There's a time for war and a time for peace. So first question, how is God's sovereignty over his creation seen in verses 1 through 8? How do you see his sovereignty there? He sets the times and seasons. He sets the times and seasons. There's the first gold star of the night right there. He sets the times and seasons. He's the one who appoints the times. See, right there, there is an what? Appointed time. Who is appointing the time? Aria. That's the only question you have to answer. Who's appointing the time? And it doesn't matter what does, I guess. There's been all sorts of theories out there about who appoints time. There's only one that appoints the times. Right? Only one. Anyone who tries to appoint otherwise finds out that they have no control over appointing the times. So he's the one that appoints. Thank you, Susan. It's just not the times, it's the events in our lives. So you appoint the times and events, but for what purpose? Why would he be the one appointing the events and the times? What is it he's wanting to accomplish? To draw us nearer to him. The second gold star of the night. Look at this guy. My goodness gracious. Yeah. He wants to accomplish his divine purpose in our lives, in the lives of his creation. Right? From the point of birth through death and even beyond. Then how come I fight it? I don't know. That's something you have to answer. You're the teacher. I don't know. Why do we fight it? It's a great question. So what of God's creation can we depend upon for day of living? You understand there are certain things he put in motion that are necessary for day of living. What are those things? Day and night. Day and night. Yeah. The seasons. The seasons. Yeah. How about gravity? His natural laws. Those laws of physics that we've defined by Newton and others. Right? But he's the one that put them in place. They just named them. They've been around since he created them. All these natural laws are necessary for life. So are the events listed above, are they always good in their time? Joyce says yes. Gene says no. Okay. We're going to hear arguments from both ways. Joyce, why do you say yes? Because God is in control. Okay. I would take that as a great answer for you. Why do you say no, Gene? Well, I believe God's in control. But some of the things that God gives us to control, we must not. True. I won't disagree with that. If that's logical. Yeah. God's always in control of everything. So let me ask you. We have a free will. Is his ways and timing, are they perfect? God? Yes. Absolutely. His ways and timing. So Joyce, if I was going to support your argument, there's where I would help you. His ways and timing are perfect. Now Gene, we as man sometimes mess things up. Yes. But he takes what we mess up and still accomplishes his ways and his timing. Okay. Romans 8.28, yeah? I'll take it, yeah. No, that's a T. You passed. All right. I didn't give you a grade. I just said you passed. All right. So let's just see what birth and death. He says about birth and death. So who has Psalm 139, 13 to 16? That's the first. Morgan, you want to start tonight? Sure. Made in secret and still fully aroused in the depths of the earth. Your eyes have seen my unformed substance. And in your book were all written the days that were again for me. When as yet there was not one of them. The question is, is he, is his timing and his ways concerning your birth and death, are they perfect? And what does the Psalmist say? He formed us and he ordained all our days. He formed us and ordained all our days. How about praying and reading Psalm 65, 9 through 13? Susan? You visit the earth and cause it to overflow. You greatly enrich it. The stream of God is full of water. You prepare their grain. For thus you prepare the earth. You water its burrows abundantly. You settle its ridges. You soften it with showers. You bless its growth. You have crowned the year with your bounty and your paths stripped with fatness. The pastures of the wilderness strip and the hills gird themselves with rejoicing. The meadows are clothed with flocks and the valleys are covered with grain. They shout for joy. Yes, they sing. Okay, take your pencil or pen or whatever you got. Every place you see the word you, circle it. Now I want you to notice something. You don't see I in there, do you? I this, I that. Yeah. You don't see that at all. Or man this or man that. Or we this or we that. Only you or yours as well. Yeah. You and yours. If it applies to God, if you or yours applies to God, that's what you want to circle. You have crowned the year with your bounty, not man's bounty, his bounty. And your paths stripped with fatness. Look at that. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. How many we got? Is that it? 10? 11? Yeah. 11. 11 in 4 verses. Right? Or 5? Put it 5 verses. 11 in 5 verses. I think that tells us something. What about planting and uprooting? We plow, we sow. You bring in the harvest. But God gives the increase. We can't make it grow. We can't make it grow. We can do all the things we're supposed to, but it grows. And I, if my wife was here, she'd say, if you want to kill a plant, bring it to my house. I mean, is she just, she is just convinced it's all her that's killing all the plants. I don't know. I don't think so, but that's what she's convinced of. You know, one of the things that my mom taught us when we were growing up, she had a, you know, one of those hummingbird feeder out on the back porch. It was, it had stairs that went down to the backyard, but on the back porch. And she had like two hummingbird feeders. And there were times that there was 10 or 15. And you could go stand out there. And once the birds got to know you, who you were, they would fly right up to your face and just look at you and hover. And you could say to them, okay, I'm going to get food. And they'd back off and you'd see a row of them hovering like that bird understood that I'm going to go in. And somehow that affected me with saying who God is, that he could, we can't communicate verbally, but they knew they were going to get fed and they knew that they had nothing to fear from us. And it was so cool because they're some of the prettiest feathered birds. And it was just something that is still stuck to me to this day about how a man could say that just half this world just happened. You stand in front of 12 hummingbirds of all different colors that will get up to your face and not hurt you and know they're not going to be hurt and like cough in their head like, are you going to feed me or not? And it's amazing to me. It's a good example. 10 to 18 years old. Never done. That's cool. Yeah. What about killing and healing from sickness and disease? Let's look at 1st Daniel 2, 6, Jimmy. The Lord kills and makes alive. He brings down the shoals and raises up. So who does that? The Lord. The Lord. He kills, he makes alive, he brings down the shoals and he raises up. Now we know that he's the one that's responsible for healing. We also know that he heals when it's within his will. And we also know that the perfect healing takes place when he takes you home. So when you hand over your brother, like we did Dave Chrome here recently, and you trust him with the Lord, you know that he doesn't heal him here. He's healed now. He's healed now. So I'm just saying the Lord is the one that did that. Now we're not going to understand why he did it, maybe ever, I don't know. But he's the one that did it. He had purpose in it. Enough of that going on. How about throwing and gathering stones? Now this is interesting. 2 Kings 3, 19-25. Kat. Then you shall strike every fortified city and every destroyed city, and fell every big tree, and stop all streams of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones. Thus they destroyed the cities, and each one threw a stone on every piece of good land and filled it. So they stopped all the streams of water and felled all the good trees until fear harassed them. Only they left it stoned. However, the slingers went about it and struck it. Yeah. So the purpose of the casting of stones was to make the land unproductive. Basically, you're going to make the land where it's going to be difficult for the enemy to work it. If you can't work the land, you can't grow the plants. You can't grow the plants, you can't feed the people. Right? So that's the purpose of the casting of stones. And that was one of the tactics used by armies back in the day. And in this particular case, you go read the context of those verses, you'll see that this was God's instructions. They did exactly what God told them to do. So there's a time when you cast stones for whatever purpose God gives you in that. Then there's a time when you take them up. When you take them up, why? To make the land productive. Right? That's what you do. So God orders and enables it, is what I put in my note here. God orders and enables the throwing and gathering of the stones. Not only did he order it, he enabled them to do it. God orders and enables what? Enables the throwing and gathering of stones. Not only did he order them to do it, he enabled them to do it. Okay? What about tearing apart and sewing together? Second Sema 1331 to start with. This tearing apart and sewing together has to do with grief. And so, first of all, in Second Sema 1331, we're going to see a certain type of grief that is expressed. Let's see. Carol? Then the king arose, tore his clothes, and lay on the ground. And all his servants were standing by with clothes torn. The context of this is when Absalom has been killed in the forest. And David hears about it. And his reaction is to express grief in the way in which they expressed grief back then, was to tear the clothes and to cover themselves with ashes. So there's a time when you express grief over the loss of a loved one. Right? Let's look at another time you express grief. Proverbs, let's see, not Proverbs, Ezra 9.5. Ezra 9.5. Let's see. Gene? All right. Is that in what order Chronicles? Yes. It's after. It's on the sheet. It's on the sheet. I gave you a handout. Oh, okay. Oh, I don't have that sheet. I'm sorry. Well, now I'm going to take away your, I gave you that passport. Passport. No. No. But at the evening offering, I rose from my humiliation. Even with my garment and my robe torn, I fell on my knees and stretched out my hands to the Lord. Lord, my God. Okay. Now you. Yeah. But the context here, you go to read in Ezra chapter nine. What they, what had been discovered was that there was a certain element of the priests and the Levites who had intermarried with other races. They had done, gone and done what God had forbid them to do. And when Ezra finds out about it, he goes into a grieving mode over the sin of the people. And when he's, if you read his prayer, even though he wasn't the one who had stepped outside the circle, so to speak. Right. When you read his prayer, he takes ownership and he says, oh, God, we've done this. We've done this. And he grieves over the sin of the nation. There's a time to tear your clothes in grief. And we need to consider how we ought to be grieving over the sins of this nation. Right. It's time to time to tear your clothes in grief and the time to sew them back together. That's what this is talking about. The time to sew them back together is seen in 1st Thessalonians 4, 13 to 18. Joyce, have you read yet? No. What a day that's going to be. So the funerals that you go to in this place, right, you don't see a whole lot of weeping and wailing. There's tears shed. Don't get me wrong. But everybody that walks through the doors down there in the chapel, looking at the saint down on the other end at the end of the aisle or the picture of the saint, they know that he's not there. She's not there. And they know where he or she is. And that brings a comfort that the rest of the world doesn't have. It also brings a comfort to Christians knowing that they'll be with them one day. There you go, Kat. So my dad passed away. And it was sad. And I miss him. But I know I'm going to miss him. I had a boyfriend that I built up with. Good guy, but just not for me. And he unfortunately passed from health issues. And I don't know. I don't know where he is today. And to this day, it's still, I mean, it's probably been about five years. There you go. We can sew ourselves back together, right, in the comfort of knowing that God's received into his eternal care our loved one, right? Our loved one is so, Dave Crone today wouldn't want to come back and debate him. I mean, you know, I'm just saying. And I wouldn't want him to come back. I miss him. Boy, do I miss him. But I'm going to him. He's not coming back to me. We'll reunite again someday. And I have a lot of comfort knowing that. That's what that's talking about, a time to tear apart, rend your clothes in grief, and a time to sew back together with knowing that you have a hope that's eternal and doesn't disappoint. What about loving and hating? Interesting study here. Psalm 97, 10. No. Hey, evil. You who love the Lord who preserves the souls of the godly ones. He delivers them from the hand of the wicked. So one thing we're to hate. If I was to say, is it right to hate people? Right. Would God approve of you if you hate? Depends on who. Ah, depends on who or what, right? I think it's the who. It's the what. Oh, Kat, I think you're right. We're going to get there. Save us. Yeah. I'm not a gold star. No? That's a gold star. I'm more than a gold star. We gave her both. She used to ignore that. So many times in the world today, though, we start out with condoning. Then we condemn it. Then we embrace it. That's kind of the way that the evil is. You know, when we get set back idly, you know, abortion, homosexuality, stuff like that. The world condones it first, condemns it, embraces it. Maybe not in that order, but... Right. It used to be condemned, then it was condoned. Yeah, they condoned it. And then embraced it. You're confused. No, I'm contemplating. You're contemplating. I guess you're right. You're right. So, yes, there are things that God hates. And there's nothing wrong with us hating what he hates. All right. Matter of fact, we should hate what he hates. Let's see what else he hates. Some awful things that you all share, but you see the thing is, is that God has placed us in the world not only to survive, but to thrive. Fatalistically speaking, we say, okay, if that's all there is to life, why not just give up? See? And that's what some people choose. Even Christians choose to do that. Now, the question is, do they lose their salvation in doing so? No. They're headed for heaven. God has a Lamb's Book of Life, and when we trust in Jesus, we're in it. God doesn't have any erasers, heavenly erasers. So, you see, now what he's, why does he do that? The reason he does that is he wants us to not just survive, he wants us to thrive. When a dog dies, they go down, they turn to dust, okay? When a man dies, because he has a spirit, God permits him to either choose to go to dust, if they choose not to have faith in him, or we go to heaven. Now we're going to talk about that, because that's a huge, that's a huge issue of life. Because now we realize that we now get to choose, from our perspective, we get to choose the destination. We get to choose who we are in Christ, and then we get to choose to accept who we are in Christ, and then we get to be who we are in Christ. That's thriving. That's Philippians 4, 13. You know, we can do all things through him who strengthens us. So the prayer that we pray, we're going to pray right now, and that's Philippians 4, 6, 7, and 8, that to be anxious for nothing but by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, that we must remain known to God, and the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. Therefore, that's why he wrote Philippians 4, 6, 7, therefore, 8 is the key, therefore, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are noble, whatsoever things are right, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are admirable, if there's anything excellent or praiseworthy, think on these things. There's only one praiseworthy person in the universe. Amen. A plus infinity. All you get A plus is infinity. That's why God is preparing you to thrive in this life, even in spite of the barnyard fertilizer. How about that? And there's a lot of it, isn't it? It stinks. But I'm here to tell you, at age 82 or 81, it's somewhere around there, I'm real old, but it works. Prayer and God's Word works, okay? And those of us who are, you think you're older, Jean, but you're not. So let's pray. Close this in prayer. So Father, we come to you now, first of all, giving you thanks. For you, you know, it would be so easy to get lost in the weeds and to get all depressed and downtrodden. And when we look around us and look within us even more, we mess up and our attitude stinks sometimes. Our perspectives are skewed. We don't surrender ourselves to you. We fall so far short. But you said in your Word, Ron started tonight talking about the Word of God is sharper and But following that passage of Scripture, we have this great high priest. We have this great high priest that we can boldly come to the throne of grace in time of need, seeking his grace and mercy. And he understands everything we've ever been through because he faced it without sin. He sympathizes with our weaknesses. He knows us. He knows we've got feet of clay. But we need to continually be coming to you, asking for grace and mercy because we need it. So Lord, I'm asking you to make that a reality in my life and the lives of everyone in this room, that we might live our lives with an attitude of gratitude, with our eyes looking above, not under, but above the sun, with a spring and a step and a song in our heart, knowing that you're in control and you've got us and excited to live life for you.
