When coaching someone, it's important to understand what motivates them. Instead of trying to motivate based on what we think is possible, ask the person about their ideal state and where they want to end up. Then, you can tailor your conversations and goals to their specific motivators. By understanding their motivations, we can help them see how making changes will get them closer to their desired outcome. It's crucial for leaders to take the time to understand their team's motivators to seize opportunities for growth. When you're using the motivator to coach, you need to find out what somebody is motivated by. Often we try to motivate based on the merits of what we see as possible, or where somebody could possibly go. When you're in the green light moment, when you're starting your coaching relationship, ask them, what's your ideal state? Where do you want to end up? What's your next move? What's that next step look like for you? What can I do to assist you? Once you can define and specify their motivator, then you can bring it into your conversations, such as, John, what are two things that you need to improve in terms of being a positive, influential teammate? And how will that serve you well as it relates to your goal of, and then fill in the blank. Notice I addressed two areas where he needs to improve. I insert the word and. How will that affect your ability to achieve? Then you tie it to this thing called their motivator. When you find out what someone's motivation is, where they want to go, what they want to end up doing, what they see as their next step, and it could be different from person to person, what you've accomplished is the emotional attachment understanding. People are willing to change if they know it gets them to where they want to go. Most people fight change in the moment because they forget those things. And if we as leaders don't have an opportunity to understand that, or understand what their motivator is, we have lost an opportunity.
