State and ask is a technique to motivate people. When stating their motivator, it's important to also ask a question. For example, if someone's motivator is to become a future leader, you would state the importance of accepting and giving feedback. Then, you would ask them what they think they do well and what areas they can improve on. This creates a positive association with feedback and their motivation. When it comes to the motivator, we're going to teach you something called state and ask. So what state and ask means is you're going to state something and then you're going to ask a question. So let's say, we'll keep it simple, that someone's motivator is to become a future leader. When you lead with a statement, typically leaders stop there. Well, you know you're going to need to accept feedback. You're going to need to really understand how to give feedback. You know, you've got to be open to getting feedback, and we let the statement sit on its own. Most people won't embrace that to the level they could. That's why we ask questions. So when somebody wants to become a future leader, you could say something to the effect of, you know, Lisa, one of the things that's going to serve you very well is the ability to seek and accept feedback and provide feedback thoughtfully and professionally. There's your statement. The question then becomes, hearing that, what do you think you do well, and what are some areas of opportunity that we can improve? That will create a positive association with this thing called feedback specific to what their motivation is.
