It's important to define engagement in order to effectively coach and provide examples. Different people have different views on engagement, so it's crucial to have a clear definition. For example, Facebook encourages employees to stay connected during meetings by having their laptops and phones open. While this may not work for everyone, having a defined expectation of engagement is important. By coaching employees to be present and providing examples of when they were engaged and when their mind wandered, it will benefit the staff and the overall learning process. In order to leverage learning projects which again are those things you assign between coaching sessions such as John next we come in with two examples of where you demonstrate a great engagement and maybe one time where you felt like your mind wandered. Please have a strong definition of engagement because it really allows you to be more specific with your coaching. Most people say, I was pretty engaged and I'll give you an example. I have a nephew who works for Facebook. They are encouraged to have their laptops open and their phones open during meetings. Now I'm not saying I agree or disagree with it but they have a very strong definition of staying connected while being engaged. I'm not saying everyone would work well with this. What I'm saying is they have that expectation. Don't assume people view engagement the same way you do. Make sure you have a definition. That way you can say, John next week I want you to come in with two examples where you felt like you were really engaged as it relates to our definition and how it served you well and maybe one time where you felt like you know what I wasn't as intensive as I possibly could have been and here's potentially the disruption I may have caused. By having that learning project and coaching someone to be in the moment, especially all of your staff members, it will serve you extremely well.
