Music is an important part of children's development, but its role is often misunderstood as just entertainment. In my childhood, music helped me connect with my culture and country. I learned traditional dances and songs by observing and practicing. Teachers should let children learn based on their interests. Music also teaches us about society and different perspectives. It can have a big impact on children's morals and future. Hello, my name is Simran. I'm going to share my childhood experience with music in this podcast. Music is one of the most important and natural part of children's development and growth. Music makes the interactions and engagements a lot easier for the children in different activities. In defining the outlook of children in different aspects like spiritual, psychological, and social lives, music has the major role. However, its role is quite misunderstood in the society considering it as a mere source of entertainment narrated by Veronica in her paper in 2014. It is due to the music that I feel so connected with my culture and country. From my childhood, I had this privilege to be a part of so many musical festivals full of cultural songs and ceremonies. In my region, that is Punjab, India, during the weddings, the ladies of the house perform some traditional dance with some cultural songs. It used to be quite famous in school as well for the animal meat performance. I used to be very curious to learn that dance and song. As children are quite observative and they're already creative, those teachers just need to lead them and let them learn. Same things happened with me. I was so willing to learn it that I observed and memorized some of the songs while others used to perform. I used to practice those at home and during the wedding, I used to get the chance to perform. As the time passed and I grew up, I became the part of the team of traditional dance group in school. I was quick to learn the specific steps, rhythms of the song and beats. I became one of the finest performers in the group. To be specific, it is important to go with the choice of children to make them learn better. From the social aspect, teachers also work as a co-learner by observing and learning about the interest of the students as all of them have different perspectives about different things provided to them to study and play with. With this independent approach, children can learn based on their choices and ways. Moreover, with those cultural songs, I came to know about different aspects of the society, different perspectives of the people narrated in the form of songs. As mentioned before, music is not only a source of entertainment, but it has a lot of impact on the perspective of the children as they can either relate to their weddings and cultures, etc. or can be distracted badly. It can highly impact their morals and life in future. Thank you.
