Hey everybody, this is Rupa from New York and you're listening to the podcast Setting Milestones. In today's episode, we are going to talk about mental health. What is mental health? Why is it important? Impact of mental health on human life? If epidemiological change, positive and negative outcome of mental health? And how to get better with it? With that being said, I would like to start with what is mental health? Mental health encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being, influencing one's thinking, perception, and behavior. It also determines how an individual handles stress, interpersonal relationships, and decision-making. Mental health may include an individual's ability to enjoy life and create balance between life activity and effort to achieve psychological resilience. So mental health is really important. It is as important as our physical health. Positive mental health helps to live a positive life. Positive attitude towards life helps to cope with the stresses of life. I believe when you do not have stress or you know how to deal with it, you have a good relationship. You have a good relationship with your family, with your co-workers, with your friends. And when your mental health is balanced, you can be a meaningful contributor to the community. You have a good thought. Your behavior is good towards your peers, towards your family, and towards your work. You have a positive attitude, so you are more productive than if you're not mentally balanced. You realize your full potential when you know what you're doing and what is right and what is wrong without being in stress or without dealing with any kind of challenges. So mental health is very important for leading a happy life. It's a vital part of your life and impacts your thoughts, your behavior, and your emotions. Being healthy emotionally can come off your productivity at work, at home, or wherever or whichever profession you are at. It can be school, a caregiver, an artist. So one must give more emphasis on mental health because it's as important as our physical health, as I mentioned. This cannot be ignored. There are things you can do to improve your mental health just to keep yourself busy. Just do things what you like to do. Pick up any hobby, your favorite things like regular exercise, meditation, yoga, activities like gardening, dancing, painting. You know, you're passionate about any hobby and have a major impact on your mental and emotional health. It relieves stress, improves memory, and helps you sleep better. When you have a sound sleep, you have a better ability to think. You know, balanced thinking, positive and negative aspects, you understand it in a better way. You know, I found a very interesting fact about mental health, why it is important. It's like this illness is one of the more common illnesses than cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. Imagine this mental illness is even more common in America and I believe in the rest of the world as well than compared to these deadly diseases. A survey says that a whole nation of all Americans over the age of 18 meet the criteria of having mental illness. That is very scary. It says that 450 million people worldwide have some mental illness. Major depression ranks fourth among the top 10 leading causes of disease worldwide. By 2029, mental illness is predicted to become the leading cause of disease worldwide. That's pretty scary. One million people commit suicide every year and 10 to 20 million attempt it. A WHO survey, a World Health Organization survey report estimates the global cost of mental illness at nearly $2.5 trillion in 2010 with a projected increase to over $6 trillion by 2030. This is a crazy figure when I was researching about mental health and how it is impacting our lives, why it is important. It's a serious concern when someone is dealing with mental challenges because it impacts that person's whole life. It's really important to understand mental health, to treat it, and to give some space so that person can actually improve and think of getting better. In the mid-19th century, William Sweetsall, he was a physician at Boston. He was the first one to coin the term mental health. Isaac Ray, he's a co-president of the American Psychiatric Association and one of its founders, of course, further defined mental hygiene as the art of preserving one's mind against all incidents and influences calculated to deteriorate its quality, impair its energy, or derange its movement. So, research also concludes that people who lack emotional expressions are inclined to antisocial behavior, like substance use disorder, alcohol disorder, physical strife, and vandalism. Whereas high mental health has the capacity to live a full and creative life and has better flexibility to deal with life's inevitable challenges. Good mental health can improve life quality, whereas poor mental health can worsen it. So, this whole episode is about mental health, where I think people are more vigilant nowadays, thanks to social media and, of course, many podcasts. That is the reason why I started creating this episode for mental health, because there are many services, like OD services, occupational therapies, which focus on mental health. They provide mental health services to persons, to groups, and populations. Occupational therapy defines any activity that occupies one's time. For example, any activities, including daily tasks, dressing, bathing, you know, daily chores. The OD profession offers a wide range of services for all stages of life. So, it's very important to understand mental health and how it's impacting, why it is important, and how to get this thing treated. Because this has a huge impact on any human life, and this must be considered and must be addressed. Thank you for listening to me. You have a good one, guys. Take care. Bye-bye. Bye-bye.
