The speaker gives a summary of chapters 1-8 of the novel "Farewell to Manzanar" by Jane Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston. It starts with the father burning evidence of his Japanese heritage after Pearl Harbor, leading to the family being arrested and sent to an internment camp. They try to make the camp feel like home and the speaker discusses their experiences there. The father's abusive behavior is mentioned, as well as the mother's background. The speaker finds the book's structure and historical background interesting. So this is chapter 1 through 8 for the novel Farewell to Manzanara by Jane Wakatuski Houston and James D. Houston Today I'm going to talk about some of the a little summary about it and also what I thought about so what happens at first is Gene's father comes out like really On the day of Pearl Harbor, and he quickly comes back and he basically explains Oh, there's Pearl Harbor, and he's a pretty wise man So he does is he burns any evidence that he has of being related to Japan but since he has a boat the authorities and the FBI believe that he works with the Japanese so he is arrested nurses the family is shortly kicked out of their house and Just after they move their proposed they are Forced to do this new program and the idea about the program is that they'll kind of group all Japanese people to kind of reduce hate now, that's what they are told, but it's actually a Interim intern mint camp so like prison basically for Japanese So they go there, and they have a really positive attitude and they get to this a cap filled tent in this really cold desert area so they Quickly kind of like as our family and their barrack kind of get used to it start to build a little tinker you know make it a little more personalized and make it like home and They quickly start to make adjustments to the building itself Jean kind of talks about like the people next to her and like who she is around and afterwards she really talks about Really like how she starts to find a little like a interest of the Catholic faith shortly afterwards her father is removed from the Sent to the camp from Fort Lincoln I believe and He joins the rest of the family and at that point Jean talks to us about like What her father like how her father came so he came from Japan with a grandpa was a lawyer and she said that she's always been very pumpous and cocky and now at The camp he usually drinks in his mom and him No, there's wife excuse me and him quite a lot afterwards Jean also talks about her mother how she came from an island off Japan. She was one of the She was the first Their first daughter so like that a lot of potential in her so The father and her mother and father get in a big fight and one of her brothers Eventually hits it that her dad to tell him like stop Punches him excuse me and he bleeds and he brought her brother runs away and hides her two weeks And he asked for the father's apology. No, however, I was kept it, but they really he just keeps abusing Her mom did make a quick mistake Her father's Grandpa was actually a judge also, he came actually from Japan and he landed in Hawaii and He was gonna work like a shirt can't plant but he found like this job with this rich person And he was gonna kind of be like the handyman doorman valet chauffeur, etc, I Found it pretty interesting how they were literally lied to until then it was just this initiative to like Help with the Japan hate and they are really excited to go to the camp I also find it interesting how even though they're like in this camp far away From home and school area. They really personalized it make at home They built the walls and really just make it as nice as they can do it at home One thing I find interesting about the book is how I kind of jumps around like Talks about after she gets released and just kind of kind of jumps around which I find pretty interesting and kind of adds to them Style the book and I also like how she really gives a brief history of her father and mothers like background Thank you for listening I hope you enjoyed
