The speaker, John Moe, discusses the decline in youth sports participation and attributes it to coaches making sports more adult-driven, being too hard on kids, and not building relationships with them. He also mentions that the cost of sports is a barrier for some parents and suggests lowering the cost to increase participation. Additionally, he mentions that parents may not have the time to dedicate to their children's sports activities. He believes that addressing these issues can help increase youth sports participation and have a positive impact on society. Hello everyone, my name is John Moe and on today's episode one of a new podcast We're going to be talking about some diversity inclusive leadership and a little bit of privileges and I know I just want to start by saying these topics that I will be bringing up are a big part of the world and Can affect our future if they aren't being fixed anytime soon So I want to start off by talking about youth sports and why there aren't as many kids competing nowadays And I thought this is a big problem that will eventually come bigger throughout time, but I kind of feel like it's on the coaches because kids aren't having relationship with coaches like they used to and I feel like coaches are Making sports more adult driven and I feel like this is starting to force kids away from playing sports because they're moving at a faster pace than their mind is processing and Coaches are being too hard on kids nowadays because They're looking into the further perspective of life and trying to get kids ready for college and ready for the NFL instead of letting the kids enjoy their time and just Enjoy playing the sport and I kind of feel like this is making a lot of kids just want to quit and just do other things and like kids are starting to play video games a lot more now because That's what they enjoy and they're starting out to enjoy like, you know being coached by people real aggressively real hard so I feel like that's one thing in society that You know needs to change because we want to keep kids in sports because it's what gives us entertainment It's what you know, it could take many kids out of bad neighborhoods and bad situations and just you know Turn their life around instead of having kids just like roam the streets and stuff So I feel like, you know kids staying involved in sports is obviously well needed for our country and just you know I feel like it's a big topic that can be fixed But to add on that I feel like coaches can do a better job, you know building a relationship with kids Coaches aren't trying to get to know kids as well as they used to And I feel like you know, that's also putting a harm on sports You know coaches aren't getting time to know the parents and the parents aren't feeling comfortable putting their kids Around certain coaches without getting to know them So I just feel like you know, our leadership in coaching sports can get a lot better and a lot more Fun and allowing the kids to you know, have fun on either the field the court whatever sport they're playing Instead of just trying to get them ready for the future so early and so fast To bounce off of that though, I feel like a lot more kids aren't playing sports because of Parents not being able to provide the money to pay for these sports and I feel like in a lot of situations sports Playing sports is a privilege. It's not guaranteed. So, you know Parents being able to pay for sports. That's a privilege that's something that they get to you know be able to do not every parent has the money to pay for sports and That's another reason that kids aren't enrolled in sports nowadays because sports cost a lot more Nowadays than it used to because obviously there's more money going into it's more fans. There's more like everything so you know, that's another problem is the amount of money to pay for sports at a young age is getting out of hand and It's limiting access for kids like Columbus City Schools In Columbus those kids don't always get to play sports and It's just like what can we do to? Help them out instead of just giving them money. How about we lower the cost of sports and You know, maybe that'll make a change. Maybe you'll see more student athletes get involved because I feel like The cost is playing a big role and why we're not seeing as many kids try out But also like parents Don't have the time like they used to again. There's many parents working two jobs There's many parents that don't have the money to pay for somebody to watch their kids after You know sports and stuff. So I feel like we need to help these parents out So they're able to pay for the sports so they could you know Possibly get their kids or something else they may like And I feel like this will take sports to a new level if we can lower the cost of youth sports and allow more kids to be able to have the chance to play and This could just you know impact our future as a whole We'll get our youth sports numbers back up to where they used to be because I'm pretty sure they dropped from 45% of youth playing sports to only about like 36 to 37 percent and that is a big difference from the year 2018 to now and you know, I think this is a big thing in society that we could change We just got to put the effort into doing it So I thank y'all for you know, listening to the podcast and I'll talk more on this topic on episode 2
