Welcome to Believe Together, a Churches Together in Kingcham Saltford production for KTCRFM 105.8 and online. What a beautiful song. Now you may remember that last week was our last quiz from Celia. This week we thank Pat Rock for our last quiz of 2023. We have Mike to introduce the theme of the questions and Debbie to bring them to us. Hey, what's new? Yes, this year is new but what else is new? We have a quiz for you this week and it is a guess the word quiz. Now I will ask questions that are taken from the Bible and I'm going to miss out just one word and you have to guess what that word is. Question one, this Thursday I will give you a new what is the answer. Thank you Pat. Now there may be several answers to that question but can you guess the one that Pat was thinking of? Well, I've got something for you now Peter, a different sort of question because this is a Christmas cracker joke. Right, so the question is who hides in the bakery at Christmas? I don't know, who hides in the bakery at Christmas? Mint Spice of course. Oh, right, okay, right. Well, Pat hasn't only given us questions this week. Some of you may remember that a couple of weeks ago there was a picture in the media of a pile of rubble in a bomb type of city with a crib scene embedded into it. And this image gave Pat an inspiration to write this poem called Rubble. But in misery and rubble it just seems out of place. Until we stop to remember the Lord's amazing grace. For God sent Jesus down to earth because of all the mess. Dying for us on Calvary he rose again to bless. So in spite of all the turmoil, God is still on the throne. One day he'll come back down to earth to come into his own. Thank you Pat. Now some of you may be having real struggles right now with all sorts of things. Maybe it's health or something else. Maybe you just can't see an end to it or see a way out. Well, Mary has asked me to play something for someone who is really struggling at the moment. And so Emma, Mary has asked me to play this song for you and your family about God can make a way. So it's called God will make a way by Don Moen. God's word tells us that all things work together for good to them that love God and are called according to his purpose. And I believe what the enemy has intended for evil before bad in their life. I believe that God can turn it around for good and make a way where there seems to be no way. God will make a way where there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see. He will make a way for me. He will be my God. Hold me closely to his side. With love and strength for each new day. He will make a way. He will make a way. God will make a way where there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see. He will make a way for me. He will be my God. Hold me closely to his side. With love and strength for each new day. He will make a way. He will make a way. By a roadway in the wilderness you'll lead me. Rivers in the desert will I see. Heaven and earth will say, but his word will still remain. He will do something new today. God will make a way where there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see. He will make a way for me. He will be my God. Hold me closely to his side. With love and strength for each new day. He will make a way. He will make a way. You may be going through a situation tonight that seems hopeless. And you think that God has forgotten you. But he hasn't. His word tells us that he has inscribed us on the palm of his hand. And he's able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we could ever ask for thanks. He can make a roadway in the wilderness and a river in the desert. He'll make a way where there seems to be no way. Let's sing it together. Oh, God will make a way where there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see. He will make a way for me. He will be my God. Hold me closely to his side. With love and strength for each new day. He will make a way. He will make a way. God, I ask you to do it in Jesus' name. With love and strength for each new day. He will make a way. He will make a way. Do it, Lord. Make a way where there seems to be no way. And now, the second question for the Just for Fun quiz. The second question is from the New Testament part of the Bible. A new something I give to you. What's the missing word? So, what did Jesus say? He gave us a new what? Hey, you. Have you ever felt like listening to our sister program on a Friday evening to kickstart your weekend early? Production for KTCR FM 105.8 and online. Well, Peter, I have another Christmas cracker joke for you. Okay. I know you're waiting for that. Oh, yes. Well, what do you call a reindeer who can't see? Uh, blind reindeer? Um, no idea. Oh, goodness me. Okay, right. Well, let's have something perhaps a bit more useful than the Christmas crackers, eh? Here we've got some news headlines, as usual. This time, a complete mixture of different subjects here. Off we go. Somber nativity in Bethlehem's Manger Square includes barbed wire. Indian priest from untouchable caste community names London's newest C of E bishop. Light in the darkness. Bishop's Christmas messages reflect on year of despair. Mass held and church bells toll for victims of Prague shooting. Belgian town moves festive ice rink into church to beat weather. Pope sends cardinal to Holy Land for Christmas in sign of solidarity amid war. Christian preacher feared missing after attempted murderer sentenced. Church neighbours in Bristol suspend Christmas away from homes in unsafe tower block. It's good news for Christian teachers. Government trans guidance for schools welcomed. Overjoyed Christian couple celebrating first Christmas in safety following death threats in Sudan. First Christmas superbook animation released in British sign language. United at Christmas football club launches original carol connecting football fans with Jesus. Now, back to the music. Last week, we played a version of Little Drummer Boy, an African version, and it was great. But there's so many really good versions around. I found a video of this one we're going to play now. It's another Little Drummer Boy video and song. If you can get the chance to look at the video, the links on our Facebook page, as usual, do go there. It's brought to us by King and Country, and they are really enjoying themselves in the video. They have at least four drum kits going in this. Anyway, let's listen to it now. Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! And now, time for the final question for the Just For Fun quiz. And the third question is... I saw a new heaven and a new... What is that word? Thank you again, Pat. I do know the answer to that question. And I can give you all a hint. It comes from the very end of the Bible. A new heaven and a new... Now, please, can you out there please send us some more quiz questions? They don't need to be very difficult. In fact, probably better if they're not very difficult, please, so that we can answer them. We do need three questions and the answers to go with them, please. Someone else can read them out or you can record it and send that recording in if you prefer. We don't mind. We just need some more quiz questions, please. And please don't delay. They can be on your hobby. They could be on some specialist subject, so long as we can answer the questions, that is. Or they could just be very general knowledge. It doesn't matter. Please send us quiz questions. Thank you very much. I expect you've heard a lot of the lovely Christmas songs over the years. Sometimes they go to number one, don't they? Now, they might not be Christian songs, might not be about Jesus, but they can still bring a lot of happiness to us because they've usually got a good beat to it. They're trying to encourage people over Christmas. Well, there's one from some years ago by Wizards. Do you remember them? And it was, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. And of course, a lot of us do wish that sort of thing and don't like taking down the decorations after Christmas. But still, if we have Jesus, we do have Christmas every day, don't we? We have Jesus with us. But maybe we don't have all the chocolates and the decorations and so on. So, let's just enjoy this, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. When the good times start to come You put a raving smile on somebody's face You make it go to your head You make it go up your head Don't you like to go to your feet and walk all the way? Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day When the kids start singing, I gotta make Jesus play Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day Let the bells ring out for Christmas Let the faith in my heart Let my soul accompany the dark Let your own deceit show that I've found my way Now before you know the fear It's as if I've frozen up my fear So will I find the light as I see it slipping out of my way? Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day When the kids start singing, I gotta make Jesus play Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day Let the bells ring out for Christmas Let your own deceit show that I've found my way Now before you know the fear It's as if I've frozen up my fear So will I find the light as I see it slipping out of my way? Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day Now before you know the fear It's as if I've frozen up my fear So will I find the light as I see it slipping out of my way? Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day When the kids start singing, I gotta make Jesus play Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day Let the bells ring out for Christmas Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day When the kids start singing, I gotta make Jesus play Oh, I wish it could be Christmas every day Let the bells ring out for Christmas Why don't you give your love a try? And here's the next cracker joke Peter Oh Right, how do snowmen get around? How do they get, I've no idea They ride an icicle And now here's my leprosy mission diary verse for the week Which comes from the Gospel of Luke in the Bible For there is born to you today in David's city a Saviour who is Christ the Lord This is the sign to you You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth lying in a feeding trough Now, Pat Rock, not only did she give us a quiz this week She mentioned an old carol that she remembered But she says she hasn't heard it for a long time So I had a look on my Google for this carol Indeed it is there, a few versions of it But the versions are only music There's somebody playing an organ or someone playing a piano And I cannot find any version with the words being sung But Pat, do not despair Because that carol that you want I did find the lyrics for it So I reckon I'll just have to read out the lyrics to it And then we'll play the music Because it's a recognisable tune and it's lovely So let's find those words So here are the words to No Room for the Baby at Bethlehem's Inn Written by Hilda M Day No room for the Saviour at Bethlehem's Inn Only a cattle shed No room on this earth for the dear Son of God Nowhere to lay His head Only a cross did they give to my Lord Only a borrowed tomb Today He is seeking a place in your heart Will you still say to Him, no room? O Lord, in my heart there's a welcome for you Gladly I now would say Come in, precious Saviour, my heart and my life Both shall be yours today Long have you waited and long locked in vain Outside my heart's closed door So cleanse me from sin then, my Lord Enter in and live there forevermore Lovely words and we're going to play the music to that Somebody's playing the organ in Holy Trinity Church, St Austell, Cornwall O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant Now, if any of you out there happen to have a copy of somebody singing that lovely carol please do get in touch with us and maybe we can play it again sometime with somebody singing it. Thank you Now, we have told you about all sorts of Christmas events including lots of church services over the last few weeks So, er, well, we've come to an end of those, haven't we? So, not many What's Ons this week but we do have a date here that will be good to tell you and remind you about and that's on Sunday 7th January the Second Faith in Action service at St Francis Church starting at 9.45am with breakfast from 9.15am Four local councillors will discuss the issues of political life as a Christian so that should be very interesting All are welcome to attend Sunday 7th January 9.45am or 9.15am if you want breakfast at St Francis Church Yes, that does sound very interesting, I know Now, another reminder very quickly, we mentioned the Kik Academy If you're interested in being part of this exciting way of communicating Christian truths into the community through football and other activities then you need to get along on Monday 15th January 7pm, Queen's Road Methodist Church to find out what's going to be happening and how you might be able to be involved This is really inspiring stuff You're listening to Believe Together A Churches Together in Caterham and Salford production for KTCR FM 105.8 and online And, how about another old Christmas carol? I don't think we've sung that recently Do you remember Here We Come A-Wassailing? Here we come a-wassailing among the leaves so green Here we come a-wassailing so fair to be seen Love and joy come to you and to you your wassail too And God bless you and send you a happy new year And God send you a happy new year Which of course we wish for you But, did you ever wonder what's wassailing means? Does it mean singing? Peter, enlighten us please Well, I'm reading here that wassailing is something that links Christmas and the New Year It's a very ancient custom, rarely done today It comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase wassail Which means good health And it was a drink made of mulled ale, curdled cream, roasted apples, eggs, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and sugar Mmm, yummy A lot of ingredients Yeah, it does sound rather good It was served from huge bowls, often made of silver or pewter So we're talking about quite expensive rich stuff here It was sometimes called lamb's wool because of the pulp of the roasted apples Looked all frothy and a bit like lamb's wool Now it was traditionally done on New Year's Eve and Twelfth Night But some rich people drank it all twelve days of Christmas Now don't forget we mentioned last week that the twelve days of Christmas start on Christmas Day or the day after And go right through to Twelfth Night, as it were Now, something else Wassailing apple trees In parts of England, including Somerset and Sussex, where apples are grown, especially for cider Wassailing apparently still takes place on Twelfth Night Or sometimes New Year's Eve or even Christmas Eve People go into apple orchards and then sing songs, make loud noises and dance around To scare off any evil spirits And also to wake up the trees so they will give a good crop Well, I never And sometimes apparently the wassail is poured over the roots of the trees to feed them Sounds like a waste of very good drink to me, but never mind It's also common to place toast which has been soaked in beer or cider into the bowels of the trees To feed and thank the trees for giving apples And that's where the term to toast someone with a drink comes from Well, I never Now a quick comment also about mulled wine, it sort of goes with the same subject That's an alcoholic drink made by warming red wine And adding other flavours and spices including cinnamon, cloves and ginger Well, the earliest records of that go right back to the Romans And they could well have brought this around in Europe OK And now, let's find out the answers OK, now we have the answers to the questions Question 1 I will give you a new heart Question 2 A new commandment I give to you And question 3 I saw a new heaven and a new earth Now that was Pat's quiz What will yours be about? Please let us know Let us have one And thank you Mike and Debbie for reading out the questions and answers Now, of course, our lovely past quiz mistress, Celia You may have cottoned on by now that she has a favourite singer And he is Cliff Richard So, Celia, with many, many thanks again for all the quizzes you've prepared for Believe Together We're going to play for you Saviour's Day by Cliff
