Believe Together is a radio show that discusses various topics related to faith and community. In this episode, they talk about the overlap of Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day this year and how some Christians may choose to celebrate Valentine's Day on a different day. They also play songs about love and trees. The show also features a quiz about Valentine's Day and a Thought for the Week about the interconnectedness of trees and the idea of community. Welcome to Believe Together, a Churches Together in Kingcham Saltford production for KTCRFM 105.8 and online. The Shrove Tuesday song, brought to us from St Clair's Episcopal Church. Now, that's a lively introduction, a bit of a light-hearted start to this week. But also, we forgot to mention, St Valentine's Day. Yes. Now, are you going to or did you scrap romantic dinner plans on Wednesday the 14th of February to celebrate Valentine's Day this year? Because Valentine's Day, always 14th February in the UK, has fallen on the same day as Ash Wednesday this year, hasn't it? Why might you do that? Let's think about what Ash Wednesday is. It's the beginning of Lent, the 40 days of preparation leading up to Easter Sunday. Church fellowships which mark Ash Wednesday may have a priest marking congregants' foreheads with a cross using ashes, usually of a dried palm from the previous year's Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week, celebrating the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem where he was greeted with palm branches. Five days later, Jesus was crucified. So Ash Wednesday is a sombre occasion, a time of repentance. Yes, indeed it is. So, as this year the moveable date of Ash Wednesday has fallen on 14th February, the date when in the UK Valentine's Day is celebrated, should you scrap those Valentine's Day romantic dinner plans? Well, for those of the Christian faith, some religious leaders encourage those who observe Ash Wednesday to fast and abstain from meat and celebrate Valentine's Day on a different day. So, if you actually forgot to do something extra nice for your loved one on the 14th February, you could always make up for it now by celebrating St Valentine's Day on another day. Speaking of love, let's have something about the Father's love, shall we? God's love. So let's play How Deep the Father's Love for Us, here sung by Keswick Praise. How deep the Father's love for us, How vast beyond all measure, That He should give His only Son To make a wretched treasure. How great the pain of feeling lost, That God would send His grace away And through His mother's children born Bring many sons to glory. How deep the Father's love for us, How vast beyond all measure, That He should give His only Son To make a wretched treasure. How great the pain of feeling lost, That God would send His grace away And through His mother's children born Bring many sons to glory. I know that it is. Hey Peter, I've got a pancake joke for you. Oh, great. What's the best thing you can put into a pancake? Er, everybody has a different choice. What do you say? Your teeth. Oh, lovely. This week, we have asked our friend Mark in Canada to give us a quiz about St. Valentine's Day. So, over to Blaze to introduce Mark. And now it's time for our Just for Fun quiz. Time for question one. Hello again, this is Mark in Canada. Today is Valentine's Day. While the custom of sending cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts originated in the UK, Valentine's Day still remains connected with various regional customs, and it's considered a holiday. So let's see how good you are at answering trivia questions about Valentine's Day. Here's the first question. What British monarch declared Valentine's Day a holiday? Was it... A. King Charles II B. King Charles III C. King Henry VIII or D. Queen Victoria Stay tuned. I'll be back with question number two a little later. Well, thank you again, Mark. I'm not sure, but what I can say is that we know that in the UK, St. Valentine's Day is no longer a public holiday. Now, is it anywhere else in the world a public holiday? If you know of somewhere that celebrates it by everyone having a day off, please let us know. Now, let's have a song about trees. Here's Amy Grant with Trees We'll Never See. Good sweet earth Trees rolled up and hands buried in the dirt I can see you there in one of Dad's old shirts Showing me how life's supposed to work Good straight lines Give me feet and sweat and soil and sweet sunshine And once those roots take hold you'll be just fine It's a beautiful design It just takes love and faith and grace A little time Where a plumbing daughter Just ripples on the water Trying to make it matter Until our time to leave One day they'll carve your name in stone And set your soul on hold Till then it's prayerful rain And pull it off the wheel And trees we'll never see First day of spring The whole world's waking up and turning green And everything connects to everything It's a beautiful design It just takes love and faith and grace A little time Where a plumbing daughter Just ripples on the water Trying to make it matter Until our time to leave One day they'll carve your name in stone And set your soul on hold Till then it's prayerful rain And pull it off the wheel And trees we'll never see Statues fall and glory fades But a hundred year old oak tree still gives shade Where a plumbing daughter Just ripples on the water Trying to make it matter Until our time to leave One day they'll carve your name in stone And set your soul on hold Till then it's prayerful rain And pull it off the wheel Till then it's prayerful rain And pull it off the wheel And trees we'll never see Trees we'll never see Now I've noticed that the big KTCR FM flyer says on it that the radio station is connecting communities so that's good isn't it? Now I think you're going to hear something about community in a minute And now for the Thought for the Week for the Keynesian Talking Newspaper Hello, my name is Kevin Durrant and I'm the Minister of Keynesian Baptist Church I've been given the privilege of sharing the epilogues for the Keynesian Talking Newspaper and the Believe Together radio show during the month of February My theme is trees and we've already seen how trees don't only provide us with physical benefits but can often be channels of a deeper spiritual blessing and I want to continue this thought by looking today at the way trees embody the idea of community Recent scientific study has revealed that although a group of trees might look like they are growing separately in actual fact they are interconnected by thousands of fungal threads wrapped around their roots This is called the mycorrhizal network or as some would like to say the wood wide web Through these fungal links trees are able to transfer water, nitrogen carbon, sugars and other minerals to each other and may even send distress signals when attacked by pests so that their colleagues can prepare their defences Trees can also support one another in a more literal way You might think that a 350 foot tall Californian redwood would need really deep roots but that's not actually the case Instead its roots fan outwards a distance of up to 100 feet from the trunk and this allows the roots of different trees to intertwine and even fuse together Such a weaving of roots gives all of them tremendous strength to withstand high winds and raging floods But as well as an entire woodland functioning as a community each tree is in itself a community providing a home for countless species of bacteria, fungi, lichens, mosses insects, birds and small mammals like squirrels which all interact with each other to create a strong healthy ecosystem Now although the biblical writers didn't have the benefit of modern science they still understood the idea that an individual tree constitutes a community within itself In Daniel chapter 4 the king of Babylon had a dream about a huge tree stretching up into the heavens with beautiful leaves and abundant fruit But more important we're told that quote Under it the beasts of the field found shelter and the birds of the air lived in its branches and from it every creature was fed According to Daniel's interpretation that tree with all the different forms of life it supported represented the kind of empire God wanted the king to rule over It was a picture if you like of how a human community could function in a balanced and healthy way A similar picture was used by Jesus when talking about the kingdom of God Despite his disciples having faith as small as a mustard seed God's new community he told them would grow to become a huge tree quote With such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade It's such a lovely image of hospitality a tree opening its wooden arms to welcome any creature that needed food and shelter And if you'll excuse the pun perhaps you and I can take a leaf out of that book and do whatever we can to make our churches and our local communities just as accepting of people who are looking for love and protection I want to finish by quoting that famous passage from Louis de Bernier's novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin often quoted at weddings The heroine in the story who thinks she's in love with Captain Corelli is receiving a kindly lecture from her father and he tells her this Love is a temporary madness It erupts like volcanoes and then subsides And when it subsides you have to make a decision You have to work out whether your roots are so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part Because this is what love is Love is not breathlessness it's not excitement it's not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion that is just being in love which any fool can do Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away and this is both an art and a fortunate accident Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches they find that they are one tree and not two Thank you for listening Thank you once again Kevin for those very interesting thoughts about trees Now also of course thinking about the roots of trees intertwining, supporting one another Well we've just had Valentine's Day haven't we and I'm sure that many people celebrating Valentine's Day are already aware how their sort of roots are intertwined with their other half Now thinking about love of course Christians would say the best person to love is Jesus God how he loves us Well how about listening then to David Crowder's band singing How He Loves When all of a sudden I'm unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory And I realize just how beautiful you are and how great your affections are for me And oh how he loves us Oh Oh how he loves us How he loves us Oh He is jealous He is jealous of me And all I prefer is I am a tree bending to me away from his wind and mercy When all of a sudden I'm unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory And I realize just how beautiful you are and how great your affections are for me And oh how he loves us Oh Oh How he loves us How he loves us Oh How he loves us How he loves us How he loves us How he loves us How he loves us How he loves us How he loves us How he loves us How he loves us How he loves us Yeah he loves us Oh how he loves us Oh how he loves us Oh how he loves And we are his portion and he is our prize drawn to redemption by the grace in his eyes His grace is an ocean we are all taken And help me sir I'm overthinking my heart burns violently inside of my chest I don't have time to maintain these regrets when I think about the way that he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Yeah he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Music Yeah he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh How he loves us Oh And now it's time for our Just for Fun quiz Time for question two This is Mark, back with today's second quiz See our Facebook page for details Now it's time for the answers for this week's quiz. Here are the answers to today's Valentine's Day quiz. The first question. What British monarch declared Valentine's Day a holiday? In 1537 King Henry VIII declared by Royal Charter Valentine's Day to be a holiday. Ironically the king had six wives two of which he divorced and two he had beheaded. He never won any awards for being the most loving husband. Question number two. Where was the oldest known handwritten Valentine's made and where is it seen today? The oldest Valentine still exists today as a poem written in 1415 by Charles Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt during the 100 Years War. Today it can be seen in the manuscript collection of the British Library in London. And question number three. How many roses are estimated to be bought and given in the UK this year? It's a stunning 110 million. Now that number pales in comparison with the more than 1 billion Valentine's cards that will be gifted this year. I have one quick bonus Valentine's quiz question and that is what will Believe Together's producer Peter gift to his wife Jenny this Valentine's Day? Is it A. Roses B. Chocolate C. A romantic dinner out or D. All of the above The answer to this no pressure question on Peter is I have no idea but here's Peter to answer the question. Well again Mark that was a very interesting set of questions you asked. But as for that final bonus question I'll just make a couple of quick comments. The first one is that I did not forget the day and yes we did mark the occasion. But how and what we did well that's the second comment. Don't forget everything that's done and given on St. Valentine's Day is traditionally secret and you don't know who it's come from. So yes even though we've been married for 50 years you never know. Somebody else might have given something. Who knows? And with that comes the conclusion of this week's quiz. My name is Mark Robinson from Manitoba, Canada. Until next time God's blessings on each of you that listen and be assured that God loves you and the Believe Together team loves you. Well it's time to say goodbye again I think. I've really enjoyed this hour with you and look forward to spending some more time with you next week. Now recently I heard a message from Bob it was excellent and it was about different places in the Bible where it says and God remembered somebody. I think he mentioned Rachel, Sarah, Hannah and Noah. God remembered them. Of course God always remembers us doesn't he? But sometimes he reminds us that he's remembering us by doing something for us. So I found out that it's Bob's birthday this week so Bob are you there? We're going to play for you something with that word remembering it. And it's do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Sung here by the Little Sunshine Kids. That's what we're going to play out with in a minute. Happy birthday Bob. Happy birthday and goodbye from me too. We'll see you again soon. We come to the time of our blessing now. Father God ancient of days we thank you for your unstinting love for us all and all the blessings you share upon us daily. In Jesus name, Amen. Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Look away beyond the blue. Look away beyond the blue. I so see that that my Savior you take him too. I so see that that my Savior you take him too. I so see that that my Savior you take him too. Look away beyond the blue. I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun. I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun. I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun. Look away beyond the blue. Look away beyond the blue. Look away beyond the blue. Look away beyond the blue.
