I hear you had actually a meeting with the police commander recently. So, every quarter we've got a regular meeting with the police commander. Now, as you know, Keegan, council doesn't control police, and I don't say, right, I need you to send some troops over here and make sure you've got some officers doing this. It really is just to make sure we've got good lines of communication open. Is there anything that we can do together? Is there anything that works together for us? In other words, if the police say, council, could you help us with this, or if we say, could you pay some attention to that, we've got that good working relationship. Something I've seen pop up is there was a crime summit for Dubbo proposed last year, and there's a lot of people sort of bringing it out of the woodwork, suggesting that it shouldn't have been voted down. Could you just remind us the ideals behind the reason to vote it down last year? The first thing, if you jump out to the world and advertise that you want to run a crime summit, you're really advertising to the world that we've got such a terrible crime problem in this community that we need to have a summit. Now, we don't have such a terrible crime problem here. There is crime in Dubbo, obviously, but if you advertise that, the harm you do to tourism, the harm you do to your businesses, the harm you do to your reputation of your community, the long-term reputation of your community, is untold. Do you think some of these figures when it comes to crime, they're being taken out of context and used to sort of blow it out of proportions? If it suits the agenda that you're on, then you'll cherry-pick certain stats. So if you, for whatever reason, would like to make Dubbo look bad or make any one of the 128 councils across the state look particularly bad, then you can cherry-pick figures. You know the old story about stats. You've got lies, damn lies, and then statistics. And I think with stats, you can manipulate those stats and still say, I'm quoting stats from Boxar, which all of these figures come from Boxar. You can quote those figures, but it depends how you want to quote them or which category you want to focus on. So it comes down to what your agenda is. If your agenda is to maybe sensationalize things, to boost your profile, or to make Dubbo look bad, then you can make Dubbo look terrible. What can council do about it? And I think that's the important bar here. We don't control the police, as I mentioned a moment ago, and the sentencing regime is the second part. The state government themselves, Chris Mintz, the Premier, Yasmin Katmi, the Police Minister, they've both said, we don't need a crime summit. We know where the problems are. We've got all the data. There's been years of data they've got. We know where to address it. We've just got to work out how to address that. A crime summit is not going to do anything. Supposedly, a portion of that that wasn't mentioned in the news is they're making, the Russian media themselves are making memes, photoshopping the king's head onto the photo of Prince Kate. I think it's Kate Middleton. I don't know if that's Prince Kate. I don't even know if she's a princess. No idea. Her head, which was the photo that was supposedly altered, which, you know, it's the massive controversy at the moment, is Kate Middleton alive. All these fake photos prove that she may not be. So they've photoshopped the king's head onto her on that photo, supposedly trying to make a link that everybody's dead. I have no idea what's going on. Seven inmates in an eastern Kentucky prison have filed a federal lawsuit after they were given the choice of either drinking their own wee or to be tased after they failed a drug test. That is possibly... What a choice. That is the most severe would-you-rather I've ever heard in my life and it actually has consequences rather than just being theoretical. The lawsuit says in detail how four officers at Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex told the inmates who failed drug tests they would be able to throw away their urine sample if they chose to be subjected to electrocution by taser or to drink their own wee. I suppose that's a choice. I'm sure there's a couple of people out there this morning who'd prefer to be electrocuted than undertake a urine sample, so maybe there's a few people that might be relating. Shortly afterwards, a staff member apparently approached the duo, commanding that pets are not allowed in here. Obviously referring to the service duck, a phrase I've never heard of before. Justin, owner of Wrinkle the Duck, the service duck, then proceeded to produce three official government documents stating that Wrinkle was indeed a service duck and it is documented and stamped that there is such thing as a service duck. That is something. Besides this, other than, you know, providing proof that he had a service duck and it exists, he was then shortly afterwards banned from every Bucky's store in the entire United States. Yeah, we had a really good day yesterday. It was nice and cool travelling out of Dubbo and yeah, it was pretty easy going and it didn't get really hot until the last little bit. I saw there was a couple of proper puddles of water going around. Was that like a sort of localised flooding? Yeah, there was a little. We took the back road out of Dubbo to Eumundri and yes, there was certainly a couple of spots where those little creek crossings were flowing and that just added a little bit of excitement to the day. But yeah, it wasn't a problem in the end. We jumped over all of them and yeah, made it safely to Canamble. What's the plan for this morning? Where are you heading? Well, we're on a pretty exciting ride today from Canamble to Walgett. I think we just crossed over the bridge in town and we reckon that's the biggest hill we're going to go over for the whole day. Oh, right. It's a bit of a biscuit out there and the scenery is relatively monotonous and I do recall we were riding along yesterday afternoon coming into Canamble where it's reasonably flat as well and Brad McGee, the Olympic cyclist, was riding next to me and he says, I think we've already gone past this haven't we? We're going to go past it a lot more before we've finished. So is the plan today a lot of sort of highway riding or are you taking a few back roads like yesterday as well? No, it's straight down the highway today. We're all on road bikes and we're not really geared up to go off-road too much. We're sticking to the main roads and the roads are pretty good and quiet so we'll get there in good time today. Brilliant, mate. A snake catcher in Queensland has discovered a snake hidden within a basket of dirty undies. Out of all places to find one. Sunshine Coast snake catchers say he narrated the whole experience. I just feel quite perplexed about all of these photos. I'm saying, the whole timeline in my head, I can't exactly follow it. What tipped people off to start all this with Kate Middleton, the sort of Photoshop speculation? So, a conspiracy began in February that Kate was missing because she hasn't been seen in public since Christmas last year, which the royal family put out a statement saying that because she's recovering from the surgery, she won't be seen until Easter. And then on Mother's Day, the royal family shared a picture featuring Kate Middleton and her three children. They were like, happy Mother's Day, blah, blah, blah. And then a bunch of international photo agencies put out a kill for this photo. Yeah, I saw a kill order. It's a bit sort of violent, don't you think? It's very dramatic. Extremely dramatic. And so it's just all this frenzy being whipped up because there's a kill order on this photo for apparently being manipulated, which, as you can imagine, set off the conspiracy theories even more. Oh, 100%. Everyone's just like, oh, look, there's no proof that she's alive. What were the signs of it being manipulated, though? I had a look at the image and if you just take a quick glance for even like 20 seconds of the image, you can't entirely see anything. I honestly, I don't think I would have ever noticed. And the agencies haven't put out a specific list, but from speculation online, people have pointed out a couple of things. At some point, her hair, like Kate Middleton's hair, looks a bit awkward under the chin of one of her kids and across the shirts of the other ones. Like, it looks a bit blurred. The color seems to leak into areas of the image that it shouldn't be. There's some awkward moments around shoes in the image. They're slightly cut off behind the chair. Also, somebody pointed out, and I think this is actually quite convincing, the background is green and lush when this photo was supposedly taken during winter as well. Oh, brilliant. Okay. You can't deny the season. Yeah, at the very least, even if it wasn't manipulated, there was speculation on whether it had just been taken a long time ago and then reshared. Ah. There were a couple of little things around awkward patterns in clothing where it looks manipulated, fingers in the wrong places, like that kind of thing. It's always the fingers. I swear, any AI photo I see, it's always the fingers. Yes. And then Kate Middleton actually put out a statement saying that she had edited the image herself and apologized, which, like, is a very strange circumstance because obviously the Royals have a media team. Yeah, exactly. Why is she going and messing around in Photoshop? Yeah, like, that wouldn't be her job and they wouldn't just randomly, or you would assume they wouldn't randomly put out photos that are unedited. Yeah, exactly. Like, it's a little bit strange. Maybe she's just picked up a hobby. Right? Like, she's just having a bit of fun. She's sick in bed and bored. Exactly. So, it seems it's all actually kicked off again with another photo. What's going on there? So, a few days later, another photo was released by a photographer of Kate and Will in, like, a car driving away from the palace. But when you look at the car, so it's driving past a brick wall, which kind of veers off into an alley, but in the actual, through the windows of the car, the brick wall looks different to the wall behind the car. Oh. So, the bricks in the window, which should be the same as, like, the rest of the photo, Yeah, of course. looks different and they don't actually align with where the wall kind of veers off. I can see why this conspiracy is taking off. I'm starting to be convinced that she is, she's dead, honestly. And it's, yeah, it's definitely convincing that, like, something weird is going on. After all of this evidence, the only question I've got from your opinion, is she no longer with us or is she alive and kicking? I reckon she's alive and kicking, but I, like, I'm definitely slightly partial to the conspiracy theories about, like, maybe a complication or, like, something weird went wrong with the surgery and she just, like, doesn't want to be seen. Like, maybe she's unhappy with her appearance. You know, it's, like, hard being a public figure and with the British press, like, kicking apart. I can imagine, like, maybe that is why, but honestly, like, sometimes I just don't know what to make of this. Well, your method here is much more reasonable than people immediately presuming that she's dead. I know, right? But I also, like, I definitely remember when with Prince Philip, like, they were just, like, Oh, yes. And I bought those. I was convinced. This week. And it's just unlocked a hidden memory in the back of my brain. The Suite Life of Zack and Cody from Disney Channel has turned 19 years old. It premiered in 2005 and ran for only three seasons, ending in 2008. I swear I remember it for longer than that. Apparently, 2005 to 2010 has been classified as the golden years of the Disney Channel and it fell off after that. Mr. Mosby was obviously the peak character of the series. The main characters Dylan and Cole Sprouse, obviously. And it went on to some sort of ship spin-off. The Ship Life of Zack and Cody? There was some sort of cruise vessel spin-off, which I have no idea what that was called. Yeah, it's happening Friday night out here at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The fundraiser is for Cancer Council New South Wales and it's a drag cabaret event with dinner and dessert and also an option for a Savannah Safari Tour with Timberlina as your tour guide. Oh, right. Yeah, OK. What's the sort of timeframe of things taking place? It sounds like a massive night. When's the tour compared to the actual cabaret show? So the tour kicks off at 6pm and then the actual cabaret show kicks off at 7pm. Guests are able to come out and enjoy pre-event drinks and meet and greet with a Bork and Foxy Foe who make up the trio for the drag cabaret. What's included in the price of the ticket? So included in the ticket is a signature zoo cocktail on arrival, a grazing table, and also a main meal and dessert as well. What's a signature zoo cocktail? Now I'm curious. Well, it's a surprise for the night. Oh, right. The amazing event staff out here have concocted themselves and it's probably a little bit wild. Oh, yeah, I'd expect it to be. It is an 18-plus event but it's suitable for anyone who likes to be entertained and something a little bit different from the usual night out. What's some of the support services that Cancer Council provide here in Dubbo that you're raising money for? So here in Dubbo, Cancer Council NSW provides the transport to treatment service which is a free transport service within a 200km radius of Dubbo for patients undergoing cancer treatment as well as their carers to get transport to various appointments that they need in relation to cancer treatment and consultations. But also there's the 131120 hotline number which people can call up for any advice or information as well as financial counselling, legal support and also support with accommodation if that's needed and a lot of other services as well. How much are the tickets? They're $100 which is all-inclusive. Discounts for group bookings as well. What's the numbers you're expecting on the night? Looking for around 100 people. That's the ticket limit that we've got in place to make sure that people are able to enjoy themselves and really engage with the entertainment as well because sometimes during the acts Timberland, Bork and Foxy Foe, they do like to get a bit interactive with the crowd as well. Commander Smith says many are repeat offenders who were out on bail at the time. We have charged 153 individual offenders 660 times, which tells you that these offenders are continuing to re-offend. In fact, 71% of our offenders charged are under the age of 18, and 67% of those charged are at liberty on bail at the time of committing further offences. So that tells you something about the cohort of people that are committing these offences. Commander Smith also says the level of violence accompanying recent incidents is unprecedented. But it's forcefully entering people's homes in the middle of the night, motel rooms, particularly targeting elderly and vulnerable people, armed with weapons and distributing or displaying a lot of violence towards those victims with the intent purpose of stealing their car. It seems to be the predominant issue we're dealing with. We've always had kids breaking into homes, but just the level of violence is quite unprecedented. And that is the issue we're trying to deal with to make people safe. He says drugs and social media are key factors in youth crime. We are aware that the issues around social media, around drug use, are the underlying drivers of this. And it's not lost on us that we will continue to target drug supply, drug use. And the use of social media is how these young kids who are looking for notoriety and almost daring each other as to what they're doing. It's a challenging one, but we're more than determined to deal with it. In one of the most recent incidents last Friday, police arrested seven people after a high-speed pursuit north of Dubbo. The pursuit was ended after officers successfully deployed road spikes near Yumundjeri. They later charged a 29-year-old man with multiple traffic offences. In another incident reported by this news service, two juveniles, aged 15 and 16, were arrested in November after the theft of two Teslas, aggravated break-and-enters at a retirement village and a West Dubbo business. Commander Smith says the youngest person arrested under Regional Mondgoose was 11 years old. His message to those committing crime is clear. To send a message to the offenders who are doing this, that we have no tolerance for it and we intend to keep locking them up, putting them before the court and holding them to account. Commander Smith also says locking up young offenders is only part of the solution. Sitting behind that, though, needs to be some diversionary strategies so that we just don't keep locking up offenders, particularly young offenders, who then are released on bail just to keep this whole roundabout going. Youth action meetings, or YAMS, are part of that strategy. The Yerranna Mid-Western Police District is one of nine selected to roll out YAMS after a successful trial at Bourke and Cots Harbour. The youth action meetings are a central component of this and they're already up and running in a number of locations throughout Western region of New South Wales and we will continue to run YAMS and in fact we're having conversations at the moment with other government departments as to how we can enhance those YAMS to target the individuals that need to be case managed and included in that whole YAMS process. Commander Smith has also welcomed recent bail reforms. He says these, combined with diversionary programs, are needed to address the high number of people who are bailed by magistrates then go on to re-offend. Oh look, we think it's a step forward. Anything that helps us to hold young offenders accountable is a good thing and it's a frustration for not only the police but it's a frustration from the community that young people are committing serious crime, serious violent crime that are putting people's lives at risk and I don't think we can underplay that. The reforms that have been put forward are a positive step forward. We welcome them. The important piece is though is that with that comes those diversionary strategies so that we're not just on this roundabout of lock them up, let them out and then lock them up again. There's got to be that diversionary piece in which we're working with government now so that once someone is locked up and they're given bail that there are some controls around that and their behaviour and incentives not to re-offend.
