The speaker discusses the state of Chicago sports teams, highlighting the recent success of the Cubs winning the World Series and the Blackhawks being a dynasty. They also mention the Bulls' success in the past and compare it to the current team's performance. The conversation then shifts to discussions about the physicality of sports, particularly the NFL and NBA, and how it has changed over time. They also talk about the importance of having a good quarterback in football and the challenges faced by the Bears in finding a franchise quarterback. The speaker concludes by expressing optimism for the future of Chicago sports despite the current struggles of the front offices. Cool, so You know obviously right now Chicago sports as a whole you got the Cubs who are just miss the playoffs you got the Bears who are bad and have been bad for a while Bulls are a bad basketball team and the Blackhawks are Not good but I guess in recent memory like Cubs win a World Series Blackhawks were kind of a dynasty and yeah, I wasn't around for that but The Bulls were a dynasty like out of those three was the What was the best? Kind of time to be a Chicago sports fan for you. I Mean the most recent one just because again the anniversary just happened was the the 2016 World Series, right? That would have been a time you you're around as well after suffering through a A Lifetime of Woeful teams, I suppose Maybe some that got a little close. I mean finally getting the World Series and championship in 2016 Was was obviously I think for anyone who's a sports fan anyone who loved the Cubs from afar whether you lived there or not I think that'd be probably the most recent memory Mm-hmm. Yeah, and I mean that was probably the one that I remember most vividly because some of my earliest like sports memories was Watching the Hawks beat the Flyers. I think I was with you in that Patrick angle happened. Yeah, and then we were at what was that restaurant called that we went and sat in To watch the Hawks beat the Bruins Not sure though, yeah and then obviously later the I fully remember the Hawks beaten the lightning But I mean did any The bones were good for so so long. Obviously, it wasn't around them. Like what was that? Like what was that like the whole city if you were there for that? So, I mean it's obviously if you're a If you're a basketball fan Regardless of who your player is now in the modern era yokic or LeBron or Kobe was around Everybody still gets compared to Michael Jordan and I think any championship team gets compared to The Bulls when they had their their dynasty going so, you know, you name a championship the expectations of That team once they fully came together with Pippen with with Rodman you know, I mean that was just it was just a thrilling time to be an NBA fan and then a Bulls fan and then even if you weren't a Bulls fan It was just exciting to see a player like Michael Jordan play and the way he did. Yeah Yeah, I mean we see with LeBron today like all the people that are I guess my age Or you know, there's kind of that generation with like argument of who's better Jordan to LeBron. I'm sure it varies on what age you ask but like regardless like having that I guess Size of like a star player that's doing like all these things especially in the time in the NBA What it's like that's why it like got really really big I Again wasn't around then probably would have been really cool to be kind of part of that and hopefully we get to see that with the Nuggets a little bit, but Yeah, for sure. I think the game's changed a lot, right? I mean, I think that you know you ask the generation of your parents who were exposed to the Bulls, let's say or Your generation argument or the debate becomes the physicality of the game Uh, you know seemingly it's often right? I mean you would watch Jordan You know dribble through three or four, you know three guys and just get hacked along the way with without too many fouls Called and still have to come and deliver and put up numbers the way you did so so I think my generation are always would argue that just the era of that of That team and those in the 90s they're right it was much more physical it was Letting the game happen letting it letting it be played not too similar to the NFL these days, right? Where it was just a little bit more rough and tumble. So I think Jordan kind of shown through all that You know, even with kind of the physicality compared to this generation of players So but yeah subjected my opinion for sure. Yeah. Yeah I mean, they literally made the Jordan rules like because of Jordan or it's like if you see ya, you know I'm through the paint I think it's just like that in all sports though Especially seeing football like you go back to like the Bears defenses where you have like air locker and Lance Briggs and like, you know I was told him like actually making like big hits then you go back to like other like big hitters Ray Lewis I'm like, you don't really see that anymore. But like I guess I guess Partially you know the Bears row is I think a defensive first football team and I think now it's kind of starting to catch up with them because you know we had that really good defense a few years back when we were only so much for Biscay and There's always so much. Yeah your defense can do for you in this I guess in this NFL Yeah Look, it's a great point, right? I mean, I think with some of the rules that are a little more friendly to Quarterbacks understandably so right? You don't want anyone injured you know certainly You know permanently or really kind of setting their career back and having kind of long-term effects but I think the way the game was played when I was growing up or a fan, even when I was your age to your point, you know, whether it was her locker or You know, whoever it was I just think the Bears defense was able to play tougher and more aggressive because there wasn't that concern that you put too aggressive of Of a play on the quarterback and it's you know We're roughing the passer call and really kind of changing the dynamic of the game, right? so I think that because of the way the game has changed to your point exactly that All the defenses can be equally as aggressive I would suppose they still need to kind of Pull back a little bit more than I think they did when yeah, you know, I was your age watching them, right? Yeah I mean it sucks to see like you get like our division the NFC North right where it's like the Bears have Historic defenses the Vikings have historic defenses Then you also look at like the AFC North like just like the North brand of football We're like the Steelers and you know, the Ravens have these, you know, I guess defenses that are still talked about today I guess you look at old highlights. I look at old highlights, you know football that I don't really remember watching I'm like kind of wishing that it was still like that. But um Yeah, I mean I think also today like there's so much technology and so much like research that's been done. It's like Probably player protection is a little under or was a little undervalued back then. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely So it could to that point exactly, you know, you don't want to diminish that fact, right? This is for the benefit of the players and their long-term health You know, it's an incredibly rough sport and these people Have a very short career span in the NFL and yet they could have You know long-term health effects through injury through You know head injury, whatever it is. And so you definitely want to protect them. It's it's for the better of the players I think it's for the better of this work, but Everybody's got to adjust accordingly, right? I mean it needs to be defense, you know defense wins championships now. I'd argue that They influence it but you have to have a great quarterback, you know, look at Mahomes obviously look at Look at the Patriots with Brady and if you have a great quarterback that has pocket presence that can scramble that can create plays the defense is laying off a little bit of how aggressive they are and frankly It allows the great quarterbacks of the world to really free up and use their skills and talent You know to scramble or to have more time in the pocket or whatever it may be. So Yeah, I mean you see it in pay to they're getting paid the most out of probably any position of sports Yeah under a salary cap kind of structure But I mean quarterbacks are Definitely probably the most valuable position in sports right now, which is again why the bear situation is Not the best right now, we don't really have a guy that we can say like this is our franchise quarterback Yeah You know, I mean Yeah, the guy agent who came in looked all right, but I mean we're in a league now we're like all right isn't going to cut it and hopefully our front office makes those changes, but Yeah, look kids got an arm he's got a great arm You know, but again quarterback pay aside. You still have to build the team around him, right? You still have to Build up a good offensive line to give him more than you know a second or two to make a quick decision You've got to give them a receiving core That's not going to drop a you know, a ball that hits him in the hands in the end zone you know, you've got to have a run game, you know to Set up the pass so I even though they're you know the most highly paid on the field you still and even with kind of the rule changes that we talked about or kind of the the need to protect some of these players you still have to Build out an entire team To be successful right with you know, the offense and with the defense, but with the offense the offensive line You know good running backs and certainly good receivers for these quarterbacks But be able to find the time to find them and get them a ball that they might have to You know jump and contest for so bring it down Yeah, exactly. I mean, I think we could do that. Maybe not with this front office I think there's been a lot of I think for all Chicago sports just all the front offices right now are kind of in shambles Building era for just about every Chicago sport for every single for every single team. Yeah But I saw it. Well, I mean you've got some yeah Craig counsel coming over from Milwaukee and you've got the guard who looks like Yeah, we watched him play the other day and you know, certainly he played a tough, Colorado team But you know, I think he's got a great deal of potential and he's been coming on strong for sure. So Yeah, that's the problem with being a Chicago sports fan. Is that we are Always optimistic and hoping and believing that we can get through these rebuild years even though You know 5 and 10 and 15 and 20 years go by before we really start being contenders So, I mean, it's the most frustrating city to be a sports fan and Thanks Yeah I know. Oh, yeah, I know unfortunately, but also fortunately wonder wouldn't want to be and anywhere else but
