Aucassin and Nicolette

Unknown

"Aucassin and Nicolette" is a medieval romance that tells the story of the forbidden love between Aucassin, the son of a count, and Nicolette, a Saracen slave girl who has converted to Christianity. The unknown French author crafted this tale in the early 13th century, combining prose and verse in a unique style called a "song-story." Despite facing fierce opposition from Aucassin's father, the two lovers endure imprisonment, flee their homeland, and face numerous challenges before they can reunite. Aucassin is portrayed as a brave and devoted knight, while Nicolette displays daring and resourcefulness in her unwavering determination. This particular translation of the work was completed by Andrew Lang, a Scottish writer and collector of folk tales, in 1887.
