Coachability and motivation are closely connected. Motivation is essential for someone who wants to advance in their career or take on more responsibilities. When coaching someone, it is important to consider what motivates them. For example, if coaching Lisa, who wants to become a manager, it is important to define coachability and explain how it can help her achieve her goals. People often focus on their goals and forget about other important qualities like coachability. Being coachable is valuable for leadership and can lead to promotions. It is important to tie motivation to the definition of coachability. Coachability and motivation really go hand-in-hand. When you think about somebody who wants to be promoted, wants to move up the organizational chart, or somebody who may want to do more work, let's say, to their liking within the job, you know, motivation, in terms of what motivates someone, is so critical to the coaching relationship. Again, let's take a very simple example, and let's say we're coaching someone named Lisa, and Lisa wants to become a first-time manager. Yet, let's say you know that she can be arduous at times, very opinionated, very strong, and you present Lisa this definition, this very well-thought-out definition of coachability. Now, again, remember, the defining coach is the following formula. Coachability is fill in the blank by doing what, and then list out specific attributes and actions they need to execute to support that definition. Once you have that, you can present that to Lisa and say, so, Lisa, let's assume that you become the ultimate coachable person. How will that serve you in terms of your pursuit of becoming a first-time manager? See, a lot of times people want to get to a destination, or they want to achieve something, or they want to pursue their motivation as they should. They forget all these other extraneous things, such as coachability. What's the value of being coachable to becoming a leader? You're promotable. You're easy to work with. That's what other leaders want. That's what would lead to a greater promotion. But what people will do is they will compartmentalize those things. Think about tying in motivation to your definition of coachability.
