Dennis and Bonnie are discussing the Oscar winners for Best Picture. They are currently talking about the 1959 film Ben-Hur, which is the longest Best Picture winner. And we're up to number 45. Wow. Yeah, we started talking about them in the beginning at 69, so we've passed about 34. And then after this one, we'll have 34 left. Wow. There's some sort of symmetry there. Yeah, but what are we talking about today? Today we are talking about Ben Hur from 1959. Ever heard of it? I had heard of it. Yes. I didn't know anything about it. Okay. I think I came up with Chariot, which is good, because I'd only heard about it, I'd never seen that scene. Right. A very famous scene. It is a famous scene. Yeah. I mean... Yeah, I've seen it several times. Okay, really? Wow. Yeah. I've seen it probably, I would say, three times, and then I watched it twice. Wow, that's a lot of hours. It's a very long movie. Yeah. And I also watched this week the 1925 silent version of Ben Hur. Oh, did you? Okay. It's another two hours and 20 minutes. Okay. Very short. Yeah, you should say this is the longest Best Picture winner. Oh, is it? Three hours and 40 minutes. Yes. It's the longest total runtime. It does have 26 minutes of overture and intermission. I fast-forwarded to it. Yeah, if you fast-forwarded that, and just look at actual movie time, I think Don Luther Man and Lark Slavavia are a little bit longer. Okay. But, yeah. And we haven't gotten to those yet. No. Wow. 1959 is a pretty big year for movies, actually. Have you ever seen The Nun's Story? No. Okay. The Nun's Story is a drama starring Audrey Hepburn. Oh. It's directed by Fred Zinneman, who's already seen two of his movies. Have we? Yeah. I think probably two of our favorites. He directed From Here to Eternity and A Man for All Seasons. Oh, yeah. Good. Yeah, so. Is this a good movie? It looks good. I like The Nun's. Yeah. It's one that you don't want to go in thinking, oh, this is probably just like The Sound of Music, because it's a very serious drama. Audrey Hepburn plays, based on a true story of a Belgian nurse. I mean, she becomes a nun because she wants to be a nurse. And so, she does, much of the movie is about her conflict with the superiors, because really she feels more called to be a nurse than to be a nun. And so, she kind of struggles, I guess, with her obedience, because she has a real passion to go to the Congo, controlled by Belgium at the time. So, I think one of the parts I remember is she does eventually get sent, but they assign her to the rich hospital for treating the colonists with their things. And so, she like, bristles against it. And so, it's an interesting movie, very serious. It's interesting because it's not like a rosy picture of religious life. I mean, I think the movie pretty much takes her side and her conflicts with the superiors, but it's by no means anti-clerical. It kind of takes these issues seriously. Gives her perspective. Yeah, I haven't seen that in a while, but I don't see why you wouldn't like it. You like Audrey Hepburn? I do. Who doesn't like Audrey Hepburn? The Diary of Anne Frank. Oh, wow. Another powerful story. Very, yeah, very serious, powerful story. Have you ever seen this movie? No. I'm sure you know the story. I've read the book. So, I mean, this is probably the most famous movie version of it. Okay. It's the story of a young girl. I mean, her actual diary was found later, and she's living and hiding in the Netherlands, in Amsterdam, during the war. She's a Jewish family, and her diary portrays her years living with another family and another single individual in this attic. It's a very powerful story. And then she dies in the Holocaust. Yeah, it's more than I know. It's more than I know. I haven't seen that. Yeah, it's really devastating. I just watched the... I don't know if I've watched it again. The story itself is so ubiquitous that I really didn't remember if I actually seen the movie version. I may have. I've definitely at least seen parts, like maybe in class or school or something. Yeah, really devastating. I mean, memoirs themselves are powerful, but they're mostly written kind of after the fact, when the person had a chance to reflect. But it's like, these are the words, like, probably within a few minutes. Yeah, of a young girl. A situation. People are just being so mean. Yeah, it's devastating. Yeah, so that's the Diary of Anne Frank. Anatomy of Murder. Have you ever seen or heard of this movie? It's Jimmy Stewart. I've seen Jimmy Stewart in a courtroom scene. Tell me what it's about. Yeah, so he's defending a serviceman who accused a murderer. And so it's directed by Adam Preminger, and it's a very realistic look at topics that were kind of unheard of at the time. I didn't see this. The prosecuting attorney is played by George C. Scott, who we saw in Patton, much younger here. So it's a very good movie. It's often listed whenever you see lists of the best courtroom dramas of all time. It's usually on the list, almost never number one, but always there. But you recommend? Yeah. This looks like something that Adam would like. Do you think? Yeah, I think so. He likes courtroom dramas, right? Yeah. And finally, we have Room at the Top. Another serious black and white drama. Okay. This is a British movie starring Laurence Harvey, a story of ambition, kind of very topical at the time. This is kind of the Mad Men era, where he's kind of going into the corporate world and stepping on people as he makes his way up. It's kind of become a very self-centered person. But a lot of the plot deals with his relationship with a woman played by Simone Sinoy, a famous French actress. She plays kind of this worldly woman that he falls for, but pursues the daughter of a wealthy higher-up in his company. Okay. Not a good idea. But it's about him kind of using her as a stepping stone. And it's really, she's so terrific in this movie. Simone? Simone Sinoy. Sinoy? Yeah. Sinoy. Yeah. Because it seems like kind of the stereotypical loose woman at first, but then she really has a lot of depth. As the movie goes along, it's easy to find out that she really has the most integrity of anyone in this story. Okay. So, very highly acclaimed kind of a critical darling. Very good. Do you recommend it? Yeah. Yeah, this is a pretty good lineup. I mean, you have this one enormous epic, and then four kind of black and white dramas. But, probably the most enduring classics from this year are left off of a Best Picture. Oh, okay. Oh, North by Northwest? Yeah, North by Northwest, one of Alfred Hitchcock's great movies. This is part of a three-year stretch where Hitchcock made Vertigo in 58, then North by Northwest, and then followed by Psycho in 1960. I've never seen Psycho. I mean, it's just an extraordinary run. Am I going to watch Psycho? You can watch it whenever you want. But it didn't win. It did not win. No. But why did I? The apartment. Oh. Yeah, great. Yes. I haven't seen the apartment. Yeah, directed by Willie Wilder, who was also left off the Best Picture list here for Some Like It Hot. Oh, that's... Really one of the great comedies of all time. So, really a terrific year for movies. Yeah. Oh, that's fun. That's Marilyn Monroe. Yeah, Marilyn Monroe. At the Hotel Del, right? Yeah. Yeah. It takes place in Florida, but it's filmed at the Hotel Del. Yeah, very cool. Yeah, so really a terrific year for movies. By far and away, the biggest hit of the year was Ben-Hur, which also was the first movie to surpass Gone With the Wind, to become the biggest hit of all time. The Shaggy Dog. Yeah, the Shaggy Dog. So great. I have seen the Shaggy Dog. Yeah. It's actually much shorter than Ben-Hur. Yeah. Operation Teddy Coat? Yeah. I think I've seen everything. I don't know. Yeah, Some Like It Hot was also a big year, but I mean, huge cults between number one and two. Oh, yeah. So Ben-Hur really cleaned up. Yeah, a lot of big hits that year. Yeah. Yeah, but the year should have been before. So, what's the year? Like, three years, right? Three year ministry, but they had put down the year that that scene was, which was like 1926 or something. Okay, right, yeah. So that would have been prior to him starting, but he would have been an adult male by that point. Pretty early on, the Romans know about it, right? Yes, but... They know about John, and then they say there's some guy going around doing miracles. Yeah, but I think this scene predated that. That was just... I don't think... Oh, right, right, right. The Joseph scene. The Joseph scene predated that, so it's just this sort of a couple years, because then we jump ahead again a little bit. Yeah, so my impression from the novel when I read it was a lot more time passes. Yeah. So I think, from what I remember, Mephala comes back, it's like he's sent off to Roman high school, and then comes back, so they're very young, probably not even 20 when they have this conflict, and that's when he's sent off to the Galilees. Okay. But he's very young, so he's just kind of passing through Nazareth when he gets the water from Jesus. Okay. And so you get a greater sense of time having passed, because he's on the Galilee for several years, and then you get more time in Rome after he rescues Quintus Arius. He spends several years, I think, wrestling, becoming famous. And then he goes off to Antioch, which is where... You mean like Gladiator kind of stuff? Yeah. Or, okay, or was wrestling a different thing? I don't know. I could be wrong. I'm not a study. I trust you. I'm not challenging you. It sounds like you are. No, I do think that scene where Jesus gives him water was a jump forward in time from the Joseph one that we described. So that was already... Yeah, because the Joseph scene is kind of... I think that's before we meet Judah, right? Right, I believe so. It's after the Nativity. There's a jump from the Nativity scene, obviously. Yeah. And then there's a whole section of the novel that takes place in Antioch. Oh, okay. Judah kind of goes there on business, and then he meets Simonides, who is the former servant. But I think in the novel, he had been living off Ben-Hur's family as money, and he's kind of living off... Simonides? Yeah. And then there's the Simeon character. I mean, Simeon in the Bible, who sees Jesus as a baby. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know it is. Well, Balthazar is one of the three wise men, right? You see him come back. Okay, that's why his name is Balthazar. Yeah, in the movie, yeah. Yeah, he's the one who introduces Judah. By the 90s, is that her father? Yeah. Got it. Okay, I had it. I was confused. Yeah, so he kind of, in the novel, he kind of meets them in Antioch, and he knows who it is. And Simonides doesn't believe he's really Judah, because Judah died in the galleys. So he sends a spy to figure out who he is, and there's a whole lot of other subplots, and there's another woman who tries to get information from him, and this all happens in Antioch. But Salah survives the chariot race, but is left kind of a broken man, because I think that he goes on to hire an assassin that kills Judah. So there's a whole bunch of other stuff that happens. Yeah, I guess that chariot race scene is pretty violent. It's a story. I don't know how they filmed that. It was a painstaking, I mean, months I think they filmed it. I really like how patient it is in setting up the pageantry of it, with just the... Yeah. All the setup, it's like, oh yeah, but even before the race starts, you have the horses lining up, and then you have the pristine track, not a footprint on it, and you see how they make a round, so you get a sense of the geometry of the space, and you see them kind of making these lines in the sand as the horses move around, and it's really very impressive. And it's just, there's so much going on in the scene, I love the fishes that tip over, so we get a sense of how deep into it we are. There's more going on than just these two guys battling, because you also have the tension from the medics who come out and have to dodge the oncoming before they come back. It's a fairly short track. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's a great scene. It's amazing. Yeah, it really is. Yeah, and really well... If you remember back to our Million Dollar Baby podcast, we did look at that accident scene, and how it's kind of really confusing the way the shots are put together, like what actually happens with the school, and how there's this one guy we don't know who's usually putting it out, and it's just very confusing. But I love the clarity in this scene, where we know exactly why Marsala gets injured, in terms of, it really sets up why he's moving close enough so the wheels interlock, and how that happens, and why Judah would be trying to break away from it, and it's very economical. And they use that, I've seen that over and over again, maybe since this time, of that spikes coming out of the wheel. Yeah, it's in Greece. Is it? Oh, yeah! Remember that? That's right, it is in Greece, which I wouldn't have known it was from this. Yeah, also in Phantom Acts. Yeah. A lot of their Jesus staff was pretty hand-handed, I thought. Yeah, my other problem with the movie is that the momentum just comes to a grinding halt after Marsala dies. And then we get another 45 minutes, that when we see they have leprosy, I know how this is going to turn out, obviously. And it's just waiting for it to happen. Yeah, so I thought it was going to happen a different way. I thought, okay, they have leprosy, we're starting to talk about Jesus, they're going to go, and he's going to, I'm trying to figure out, are they going to touch his cloak, they're going to go here, something like that. So I was surprised that they finally get these women, Judah's mother and sister, as lepers, that they go to Jerusalem to find Jesus, and the streets are empty because everybody's at the trial. So they don't get there until it's too late, right? And so then they're watching, you know, we're watching again the trial from a distance, through a different perspective, but then after his death, they become healed. That's a spoiler alert. Yeah, spoiler alert. Which is different than what I thought it was going to be, but it's not. I figured that they were going to be healed by Jesus. And then I just think that there's kind of a disconnect, because we get over three hours of there being a very straightforward narrative drive, and then it's just like, we're kind of waiting for them to, the conflict is just kind of about, well, she's not supposed to tell them, and it's just all sorts of manufactured conflict. Right. And people take it all. And again, it took the easy way out, again, where Esther knew that they lived, well, she had just found out that they lived, but the mother and the sister said they didn't want to do it, so she had to, don't tell Judah, because we don't want him to see us this way. So she's got to keep the secret, which she does, and he finds out through Vassalla, who's the villain anyway. And anyway, and then they, you know, so it's sort of like having your cake and eating it too. Yeah. I see what you're saying. And then you get to the end, it's captivating because it's the passion narrative, and it's like, oh wow, this really happened, and kind of crazy to think about being there and stuff. But even if you're not kind of into that, then, okay, all of a sudden we're doing Passion of the Christ, like we're in a different movie. Right, but without the parts, I think, that make other passion narratives dramatic, in terms of the betrayal and the denying Jesus, all the, what's going on with the apostles and the Last Supper and all that, that kind of makes it more, I don't want to say exciting, but it's almost like hitting some tent poles with the understanding that the audience all knows exactly what's going on. Yeah, exactly. And it is interesting because clearly in 1959, people were much, you know, I mean, we've really become a post-Christian nation since that time. Oh yeah, more so than then. I mean, that's still the majority religion. You wouldn't have a movie, well, there was a remake of The Heron in 2016, actually. I haven't seen that. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I don't think this movie would be the same. Yeah, I don't think you would be on that. I haven't seen that version. And I don't know that it would be a movie that everybody flocks to. Oh, that one definitely wasn't. Yeah, the 2016 one was a big flop. Yeah. So how about, since you don't like the color scheme or this kind of setting, how would you compare it to Gladiator? Very similar story. Oh, very similar story. It's just the actual, like, this sort of technicolor. This looks more technicolor, whereas Gladiator doesn't look technicolor. It looks like, actually, Gladiator, a lot of those scenes were a lot darker. So some of them weren't colorful at all. But they don't have that sort of, like, ultra-saturated technicolor, almost like fake colors. Yeah. That you see in this, and you see in... It's a dyed tunics, a purple dyed tunics against the yellows and browns. And it's almost... I mean, they still have colors and everything, but it's just... It looks more costumey, would you say? It definitely looks more costumey, and it looks a little bit more... I don't know. I don't know what the term is. It's just a different color. Like, when you look at just what you have up on the screen, the chariot race doesn't have that look to it. That doesn't have a technicolor look to it. But you look at above it, you know, there's something... It's not just that they're bright colors, but it's... I don't know. I have no idea how to describe it. Yeah. I think for each of us, our artistic... I don't think you would like the classical ethics. I probably wouldn't. Have you seen any others? I don't know. Have you seen the Ten Commandments? No. You might like that one. It does have a similar visual style, but that's much more of just a straight telling of a biblical story. And I can get beyond the technicolor, because My Fair Lady has some of that, too. Oh, this is better than My Fair Lady. No. My Fair Lady is definitely better than that. Okay, well, we will... But anyway, I guess... So, the color doesn't bother me in every movie. I don't like Christian movies. Okay. In general. They're too... You've got to be good with the... Why can't they never be subtle? You can be subtle. You like, I mean, it's an all season show. I do. That did have some of the color issues. But it... Yeah. Yeah. But it's... Different time periods. Yeah. But I... So, would you say you like Gladiator better? You seem pretty happy with Gladiator. Yeah. I think you liked it more than I did. Gladiator wasn't a biblical... No, it wasn't biblical, but it was the same generation or two that were in the process. I like the themes better in Gladiator. Okay. I like the Russell Crowe character better in Gladiator than I like the Charlton Heston. I didn't admire this character. I have to remember Gladiator. Yeah, there's characters... There's a lot that I've already forgotten about Gladiator, I'll be honest. Right. But I do remember there were some really... There were things that I really... And I'm not like a big Russell Crowe fan person, but... I think you are. Am I? Maybe I am. I don't know. I don't know that I've seen him in anything. You liked the Louis Vuitton. I thought you liked the... I don't like the movie version of All Stars and Play. Oh, I've only seen the movie version. Okay, I don't like the movie version. Yeah. Great music. It's great music. The singing's not great, but... Yeah. Is he in that one? Yeah, he's... It's a bear. Okay. Anyway, so I don't know what my problem is, but yeah, I'm not... And it's not like I... I don't hate this movie. Right. But it's just like, okay, I'm... Whatever. Okay, that's fair enough. I definitely prefer Titanic to this. Okay, yeah. Which is, you know, as much as I sash Titanic, I've watched Titanic four times before I'd watch... Except I would watch that Chernobyl scene again. Well, actually, it's kind of violent, so I don't know. It is a terrific scene. It is a terrific scene. And believe it or not, Titanic's about a good half hour shorter. Yeah, so I'm surprised for some reason I thought you would be a lot higher on it than I am. Yeah. Yeah, I like it. Am I higher on it, or are you higher on it? We're about the same. I'm better? No, I think it's really... I think it's very... I appreciate... I think it's a very good movie. There's some really terrific scenes. And I think it does have a strong narrative rise until... Until the Jesus parts, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it just kind of comes to a halt. But there's not a lot of money on it. It's a three hour and forty-two minute movie. The plot is not bad. It's very simple. Yeah. There's not a lot of subplots, or... like, Gone with the Wind and Lawrence of Arabia, there's so much going on. And this is pretty... It really cuts out a lot of the subplots. But one of the things that kind of surprised me going back is it kind of really brushes over the Quintessarius parts, his adoptive father. Oh, yeah. You don't get a whole lot of it. And I'm like, where is the three hours and forty-two minutes? Like, why are those scenes that seem too short? But at the same time, I do love how much time it takes in setting up the race. Because it's a good ten to fifteen minutes in just like... The pageantry before the race starts, and then it's another ten to fifteen minutes. Yeah. And I had never seen that, and it was... Yeah. Watch that? Yeah. I'd also call Sue Charlton-Hudson again. I have never seen him... I've seen... I know what he looks like, so it's so interesting. You've seen Planet of the Apes, right? Yeah. I've seen them. Yeah, she's still a big guy. I've seen him a little more times, but... Some of those are terrible. Is he in all of them? Well, not all of them, no. But the older ones, yeah, I think he is. Are you sure I've seen those? Yeah. I know what he looks like as an old man. I don't know if I've seen him in something as an old man. But anyway, you just look at... Sure. I... Yeah, the role was first offered to Marlon Brando. Oh, really? Yeah, hard to see now. But I think he would have given a lot more depth to the character. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I would have loved to have seen that. Also, I think would have been better is also offered to Paul Newman, who did the Howl of Las Vegas movie. Oh, this is so great. And, you know, he's a very young man. So I watched... I rented it from Amazon Prime, I think. And so if you hover while you're watching the scene, they'll have... How about that, about time? They'll have background things that come up. So I got kind of addicted to that while I was watching it, because some of these scenes are kind of long and you need something to read while you're watching it. Okay. And they talk about him turning it down, Paul Newman turning it down. Yeah. One is he didn't like... What did they say? He didn't like the... Oh, he had done it because Burt Lancaster also turned it down. Oh, did he? Okay. He didn't like the Christian stuff at all. I mean, as a Christian, he didn't like how they handled it. Paul Newman? No, Burt Lancaster. Burt Lancaster. Yeah. Paul Newman had already been in one biblical epic and he hated doing it. I don't know what that biblical epic was. They said the name. I'd never heard of it. Yeah, there were a ton of them. Yeah. And he said that one of the things he learned is he hated doing it and his legs didn't look good in a tunic. Yeah. And so he turned it down. That's what I heard. Okay. But there was the one with blue eyes. Yeah. With the... What's his name? Charlton Heston. Charlton Heston I knew from Moses and Ten Commandments, even though I've never seen that movie. Okay. I think you might like The Ten Commandments. Okay. I really like The Ten Commandments. It didn't win, though. No, it lost to Around the World in 80 Days. Oh, okay. Yeah. It's a little bit longer than this movie, but I think you'll like it. Oh my gosh. Well, there's a lot to that story. It starts with the bull rushes. Okay. And... I know the story. Anyway. Yeah, Mosey. We will see Cassie O'Donnell again, who played Pyrza, the sister, in the next William Wyman movie, The Best Years of Our Lives. Okay.
