The main ideas from this information are: - The topic being discussed is Shabari, a type of rope bondage from Japan. - Shabari uses non-stretchy natural fibers like jute or hemp, unlike Western rope bondage which uses softer materials. - Shabari has historical roots in Hojujutsu, a martial art, and has evolved into a practice for BDSM and kink. - Shabari is enjoyed by consenting adults in Japan, including in private sex lives, stage performances, kink-themed bars, and porn. - The experience of being tied up in Shabari can create intimacy and excitement. - The importance of safety and communication in Shabari, including the use of safety scissors. - Personal experiences and encounters with individuals who practice Shabari. And we're here to give you our unfiltered review of what we tried. Quick note, our experiences may not be your experience, and our mission is to make new sex acts more accessible to everyone and share how we went about trying it. So, today's topic that we're stoked to talk about is Shabari. Shabari, Shabari, Shabari. Uh-huh. Yes, I didn't even know what a rope bunny was until you told me that term for the first time. So, there goes that. But yes, I found some background info from Auto Straddle, and I'll just read from my notes since I couldn't memorize it all. So, Shabari is a type of rope bondage specifically from Japan, and it's also called Kimbaku. Shabari means tying, and Kimbaku means tight-binding, and it's different from Western rope bondage because with Shabari, people use non-stretchy natural fibers like jute or hemp instead of softer cotton, silk, or polyester. And, you know, sometimes Shabari involves sex, and couples are tying each other into certain positions, and sometimes the fun is just about the tying itself. In some light history, Shabari is derived from Hojujutsu, a martial art from the Edo time period, which ranged from 1600 to the mid-1800s, and the samurais would arrest, restrain, and torture prisoners with rope. And often, these prisoners were publicly shamed while tied before getting executed or imprisoned, and then Hojujutsu morphed into this term called Kimbaku-bi, which literally translates to the beauty of tight-binding, which was in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And people in Japan were tying for BDSM, for more kinkier reasons, and playing with the physical restraint and emotional shame of being tied, all very fun and sexy things. And then I found this Mashable article that mentions Shabari and kink, and remember that whole Armie Hammer thing when he was in the NIV? Dang, yeah, I just saw it mentioned in this Mashable thing. I haven't seen it yet, but yeah, I just feel like him being in the news for that moment was just so bizarre. Yeah. But, you know, there's this sexologist named Midori, who's the author of Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage. She explains, in the same way that kinky people of European heritage incorporated shackles into their sex, based on historic captivity measures, Japanese folks found inspiration in captured maidens, and only that in Japan's history, the restraint of choice was rope. And, you know, today, in Japan, Shabari is enjoyed by consenting adults in their private sex lives, as well as stage performances and kink-themed bars, and of course in porn. And it even has a thriving TikTok community. Yes, you can find anything on Pornhub, and you can find anything on TikTok. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. That's wonderful. Yeah, so I love the idea of restraint in sex, and I haven't done much of it. And in college, I took a class about sexuality, and we went to a BDSM club, and that was the first time I saw someone tying someone up, and that person getting suspended, and I was like, whoa, this is just really cool to see, and it would be cool to try one day. And I think for me, more so the being suspended in the air seemed cool, and they were asking for volunteers that night to get tied up, but I was a little shy. So, yeah, I was like a baby, for sure. I know, I think a part of me was like, just do it, but then the larger part of me was like, I'm scared. Yes, we have matured over here, for sure. Yeah, and so, yeah, that was my first introduction, yeah, and I know you already were talking about the beauty, but can you tell us a little bit more about how you got into it? Okay. Mm-hmm. Hmm. Yeah, no, that's such a good point about the accessibility piece. So, yeah, similarly, you know, now that I'm older, I was connected to Shabari, and I had a friend, or I have a friend, she's still a friend, not past tense, and she connected me to her other friend, who's a couple, and they have a Shabari set up in their living room. Basically, they remodeled their living room to have, like, a ring that can, you know, hold people's weight installed, yeah, yeah, installed into the ceiling, and I was like, oh, yeah, I really want to meet your friends, that would be awesome, and so I got to meet this awesome couple, and I was telling you about them, and I was like, you got to meet this couple, too. Yeah. Yeah, so, you know, it's like, how do you meet someone in your life with the potential of getting tied up? So, but, you know, people are very friendly. Yeah, and I think this is one of the things with, like, the kink community is, like, right, people are quite open if you guys are aligned, and so, yeah, we first met for lunch, and we got to introduce ourselves to each other, and then they invited me to hang out a couple days later, and so it was all pretty, like, communicated, like, oh, you could come over and, like, I could show you the ropes, literally the ropes, and they told me what to wear, they said to not wear loose clothing, so wear leggings and a long-sleeved shirt, and so then a couple days later, I went over to their home again, or the first time was at, like, a public lunch spot, and then I went over to their home, and they described how they host, and it's kind of like office hours for their friends and guests to ask them questions about Shabari, so it's kind of like a teaching session, and they were explaining that the male partner is the rope top, which is also called the rigger, and he is the tire, and then his wife is the rope bottom, and she's the one getting tied up, a.k.a. the rope bunny, and between them, he said the power dynamics are such that the person who ties is in service to the person who's getting tied up, and in general, I just love when traditional power dynamics get reversed. It's so subversive to me, which is immediately hot, and so for this session, he was tying me up as he was. I wasn't giving him any instructions. Yeah, it's so cool. I just love that, and me and this couple, we were talking at length about that, because it's just, yeah, it's just like it creates intimacy just within that type of dynamic, and then going back to what you were saying about safety, he was also showing me the medical grade safety scissors that are there just in case they need to use it in an emergency to quickly release someone, but they've never had to use it before, so like, right, that's just like always have that there just in case something were to happen. Yeah. Totally. Yeah, this couple definitely knew a lot. He was showing me his rope that he bought, also all the way from Japan, and that they conditioned the rope, and he told me, he took a class with Hajime Konoko, which is one of the, I think, modern day masters of shibari. Yeah, and fun enough, recently I got to go see him and Marie Savage do a shibari performance in person, so that was cool that this couple, yeah, has introduced me to so much. I don't know how dialed in, but I am getting like handheld into this space, which has been really, really nice. Yeah. Yeah, and so I ended up getting tied up at their apartment, and that was cool. I liked the feeling of rope against my skin and not being able to move, and he got to do like a little suspension, and that was really fun, and oh, the other thing is I did feel my hand getting a little tingly, which was like a sign of like losing circulation, and so they were super attentive, and they said like if at any point you feel anything uncomfortable, just let us know, so when I alerted them, the wife came over, and she was like, oh, okay, is your hand cold? Are you normally cold? And I'm like, yeah, my hand is a little cold, and they were able to adjust the ties to get like, yeah, circulation back. It wasn't bad or anything, but I just like, oh, I just want to let you know my hand is feeling a little like tingly right now. Yeah. Yeah, I'm super grateful for this, for their hosting and inviting me into their space. It was awesome. I think so. Like, it was an educational situation, so it wasn't going to be like, you know, like super sexy situation, but like I think if it were to be, yeah, like a more like intimate like thing, yeah, I think it was like a fun, like I got turned on, where I could feel like my body getting warm, just from a like physiological standpoint, and overall, I enjoyed the feeling of someone controlling how my body was positioned, so it was overall very exciting and thrilling to relinquish control. So, yeah, I would be down to like see what it's like to make out while, you know, getting tied up and in the air. Interesting question. I think knowing their relationship status and just knowing, because like we talked about that as well when I was getting to know them, and I think like, I think if this were like me and my partner, yes, I would be like turned on AF. Yeah. Yeah. And I know. Oh, sorry, you go first. Okay. Yeah, no, that's a really good question. Interesting point, too, because when I was talking to them about it all, like it is so intimate, you allowing that person to tie you and restrain you, and it's like a type of closeness that we don't have on a day-to-day basis, right? And I'm not the most comfortable with touch. Like I'll hug my friends and whatnot, but I'm not like a big, I'm not a big like hugger. I don't really initiate hugs with like people that I meet. And so then I'm almost like, oh, but in Shabari, like I'm, I like this type of like consensual intimacy, even if it doesn't lead to like anything else. Yeah. Yeah, I know. I do think you and I have that in common, just like we like being restrained. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You want to talk about it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh. Hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Like, yeah, the event, that event sounds awesome. I love that people are just comfortable. That they could. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I'm down. I think for me, I, like, now that I am aware of some of the things that are around me, I think it would be cool to maybe do it, like, once a month. Like getting tied up. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Goodbye.
