I'm okay Good, well thank you for joining us today I hear you want to talk to us about something really special Concerning access for disabilities People in wheelchairs, motor buggies and that sort of thing Yes, that's right Being in a wheelchair for the last three years now I find it very hard to access certain venues And I feel that it shouldn't be like that anymore No it shouldn't, you're quite right Especially as you yourself used to be a DJ And you had access to these venues at one time And you enjoy music Yeah, many years ago And I still do enjoy and listen to music And I like live music too So that's why it's really important that you feel the venues Should have a disabled access So that you can get in and out Yes, most definitely Right, okay So, what makes you feel so passionate about it? Well there's a lot of things I'm not the only one that's disabled I'm not the only one that enjoys music And I feel that what's good for one Should be good for all Absolutely, yeah Equal rights for all Yes, I totally agree And it must feel that you're kind of shut out When you want to go to these places It does, definitely It feels like something that you shouldn't be You should be able to access wherever you want to go For whatever reason I think that things are getting better I think there's a lot more accessible buildings But they're usually sort of purpose built buildings aren't they? That's right Yeah There's a lot of places in Crowbridge now That has got access Like the cinema County Hall now has got access To the upper floors And I just feel that it should be Not just new places It should be the older places as well Absolutely, well they're just doing up the Town Hall So I would imagine that that will be Catered for for disabilities as well Well I would hope so After spending all that money on it Yeah So really I think that One of your passions is for the new town Yeah, now when I was younger I used to go in there and play pool I had done a couple of discos in there as well When I was a lot younger than I am now When I could walk Unfortunately my health has got worse Therefore I'm in a chair now And I just feel that it shouldn't stop anybody Being able to access What they want to access Do you mind us asking what your disability is? Yeah I have Cerebral Palsy Which is a I've had it from birth And all it is is that the cord Was wrapped around my neck Starved my brain of oxygen So I know what I want to do But my brain doesn't send The right signals to certain parts of my body Right, ok that's made it very very clear That's well done And yes you're absolutely right Why should, you know Things have been made possible You've got better chairs We've got wider pavements being made And all that sort of thing But what's the use if we can't get into our Social clubs and places And shops or whatever You know, if They need to sort of I think, I don't know, I suppose Maybe there is some government grant funding out there That could be accessed To help places get this But with the Newtown Club It's a sort of voluntary run And basically Everything takes money It's one of the buildings that's hardest Yeah, a lot of that is because of It's an older building And it's on a main road And I've had to like I've worked it out roughly That a ramp to go up to that door At the front would need to be 84 foot long My goodness! Which is a long way That is like, I would imagine That would be past If you went straight across the road From the main door I would imagine that would be past The car Spare space Oh gosh! Most definitely Yes Well the thing is it's not the only place is it that you've had problems with I've been in a few places where you've had problems Yeah One was an event that we did at Players and um in actual fact we were doing a Veteran's Day so Neil um he realised that they couldn't get over the threshold to go out into the courtyard and we were using the whole of the vicinity for the Veteran's Day and people with wheelchairs and things wouldn't be able to get out into the yard so um Neil what did he do? He just built a ramp didn't you Neil? Yeah um from what um Buffalo Board it was called so it's anti-slip on one side Yeah um you know and I love woodwork I do a lot of woodwork and I really enjoy it You're very good at it as well Neil You've made some beautiful planters and things like that um and this um this ramp that he made worked absolutely brilliantly it's so professionally done um for anyone to have gone somewhere to buy that that would have cost a lot of money um but you know Neil just took it in his stride and made one so that got over that problem another place we went to um there was a band we had a band playing and it was a party and unfortunately this was at the Chester Club and unfortunately in the social room at the back there's steps so again you couldn't actually get into the room so we had some really kind people from the club some strong people they um Neil managed to get out of the chair whilst all these strong people lifted his motorised chair up it took quite a few because the motorised ones were really heavy so we're not just talking about wheelchairs that you can put in your boot this is wheelchairs that are very um strong and heavy and built to get people around for the whole day as far as they need to go so you know this is the ones that need that need the access really isn't it my chair weighs 124 kilos 124 kilos yes wow that is amazing um I can't you know it's hard for me you have to have a special van as well don't you to get about in yeah I've got a Mercedes Sprinter with a um tail lift on the back which enables me to drive my chair into the van um I have a six way driver's seat which comes back and turns to like the back of the van so I can just literally transfer from my wheelchair to my van which then enabled me to drive independently absolutely amazing I mean so yes you do know all about ramps and access and all that sort of thing and yes your independence obviously it's really important to you and I suppose it's really important to all the other people out there as well and I think you're an inspiration Neil to be quite honest to stop you and I absolutely applaud you for what you're doing now it's really important I think um we've got a quote from Heather and Greg from the Newtown Community Centre which they said that if there's anyone that could spare some time to give us some advice on planning and guide us in the right direction that would be really helpful because they really want a disabled access and Heather said it would be fantastic to help our community of disabled people when the club was built it was rebuilt in 1924 so it was not designed for disabled access so this one's going to be quite a mission Neil this is something that you're going to have to work hard very hard to try and make happen but I am not going to let it beat me I am not going to let it beat me it will happen whether it's this year next year, the year after it will happen and I quite believe that too and as we're talking about ramps and ways to help people get across I had a request from a lady from the Macular Club which is a club for people with impaired eyesight and her name is Joan Jefferies and she's asked for a bridge over troubled
