Maricela, a 53-year-old resident of Jersey City, uses the Bergen light rail and Jersey City Transit bus for transportation. She wants more buses and more frequent light rail service. She enjoys the convenience of an app that provides train and bus schedules. Maricela suggests adding more police officers to improve safety on the light rail. She allowed her children to use public transportation at a young age to promote independence. Maricela witnessed a person walking on the light rail tracks and had to call 911. She also encountered raccoons and a skunk while commuting. She doesn't find public transportation in Jersey City to be overly crowded. Hi, Maricela. I'm completing a marketing course, and in marketing, in order to design something productive, you need to be able to understand people and step into their shoes. Would you mind if I interviewed you? Sure. Okay. I'm going to be asking you questions about your experience with transportation in Jersey City. Newer is Uber Teen, which is where, like, kids, because parents didn't feel safe with them being in Ubers, they created, like, a safer Uber program where only, like, the top-rated Uber drivers could drive, so parents would feel more safe. So I'm just going to ask you some questions. Okay. What's your name, and if you don't mind, what's your age? Maricela Rivera, 53 years old. Okay. Which forms of transportation do you usually use every day? The Bergen light rail and the Jersey City Transit bus. Okay. Thank you. What are your motivations and goals with transportation? I want them to add more buses and maybe more that the light rail runs more frequently. Okay. So do you use your transportation mostly to go to work or to maybe get home or...? To go to work. To go to work. That's how you use it most frequently. Okay. What form... Oh. Do you think transportation in general... What transportation in general annoys you, and why does it annoy you? Is there anything that's, like, all these inconveniences? Not really. Jersey City has a pretty good transportation system. Oh, that's good. Okay. Then say something you enjoy about transportation in Jersey City. I can... I have the app. They have an app. And also, I can text and find out when exactly the train is coming and the buses. Okay. That's good. What time of day do you usually use the public transportation? At noon and in the evening. What is the way you think would make public transportation safer in Jersey City? It would be safer if they add more police officers to the Bergen light rail path. Is it dangerous right now? They have sometimes, you know, some crowds get in, and they are kind of out of control for a little bit. Oh. Okay. Do you usually use that light rail? Yes. Oh, okay. So that would be convenient. And so some parents don't want their kids taking public transportation, even at 13 or 14. Did you let your children take transportation at that age, and why? I did, because I wanted them to be independent, and it's kind of safe. Yeah. Also, it's a good real-life experience. Yes. Yeah. Okay. Can you tell me about a specific interesting or unusual example? You've experienced commuting from one place to another. It doesn't have to be on a vehicle. It could just be walking or in a car. It's okay to have nothing. I do. I do. I was at the light rail station, and I saw this guy walking on the track. Oh, my God. And then I had to call the 911. Okay. But they came back in two minutes and got him out. Oh, my God. Wow. Okay. Also, there's been a raccoon issue. Have you experienced any issues? Yes. I saw a raccoon chase me on the streets of Jersey City, and I also saw a skunk. A skunk? Yes. Did it spray? No. Okay. Then neither. It didn't. I saw a skunk. Is public transportation that you take in Jersey City overly crowded?
