Set an intention to find comfort in something that is good for you and familiar. This could be a song, a movie, or anything from an earlier time. Notice what happens when you listen to a song or watch a movie that brings good memories with it. Sometimes I feel good show or song can be a moment to drift back to a simple time where you had less to worry about or deal with. Yes, the reality is what it will be when you return to your day, but allowing yourself many breaks from the stress of your grief can give your brain and heart much-needed rest. Notice what happens to you when you give yourself a mini break. Emotions. How do you feel right now? If your emotion were a vehicle, what would it be? Picture the color of this vehicle. Would it make a loud noise or a quiet whir? How does imagining your emotion as a vehicle help you give it space to be acknowledged? Sometimes in grief you may want to get through each day and not think about how you feel. The reality is if you run away from a feeling all day, it simply catches up with you at the end of the day or at a time when you stop going. This is a reminder to name it, to tame it. Name your emotion to tame your emotion. Just say out loud, right now I feel... and say your emotion. There is no one right way to feel and it is okay to feel how you feel at this time. Action. I've been reading ASAP Fables this week for a variety of reasons. Some of the stories may be familiar and give you a moment to take you hopefully to a simpler time. The tortoise and the hare is one of my favorites because it is a simple lesson to share and learn from at any time. In each story I hope there is just a glimpse of another way to look at things or at least find some relief from the heaviness of your loss. For some people experiencing grief, a common frustration is that the world keeps rushing by when you feel like your world has come to a sudden stop. The daily complaints that once may have mattered so much suddenly become something less bothersome. When you talk about life or death, what does matter most? Today's activity is to be curious about what matters to you as you sit in this new reality. If you have time to write in a journal, write down this awareness. There can be beauty in this new perspective. Even though you have lost something so big, there is something you can learn through your loss. Reflect on what it means to find meaning in loss.
