The release of smartphones has led to increased mental health concerns in children and young adults. From 2008 to 2017, there was a 71% increase in psychological distress among young adults, with a 47% increase in suicidal thoughts. However, there was no significant increase in mental health issues among older adults during the same time. Disturbingly, suicide rates in children increased by up to 150% and self-harm among girls ages 10 to 14 nearly tripled. These patterns suggest that social media plays a role, as 8th graders who spend over 10 hours on social media per week are 56% more likely to report being unhappy.
