And from 1994 we're going to head back two years to 1992. A year where the Queen celebrated her ruby jubilee marking her 40 years on the throne, when Nigel Mansell was winning a world championship. But also when this breakout hit came from a band from Wales that we'd know to love as the Manic Street Preachers. Now, they're a staple of the British alternative rock scene throughout the 90s, and this song is a track that critiques consumerism and the emptiness it can bring. It's also quite noteworthy as it is the only real hit that features their rhythm guitarist and lyricist and singer, Richie Edwards, who disappeared in 1995, never to be seen again. So we go to the Manic Street Preachers with Motorcycle Emptiness. Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness Motorcycle Emptiness That was Motorcycle Emptiness by the brilliant Manic Street Preachers, taking us back to 1992. Well, from rock we're going to switch gears, and we're going to dive into another world of the 90s, which was a fantastic decade for girl groups. The 90s were a golden era for girl groups, with bands such as the Spice Girls, TLC and Destiny's Child dominating the charts. One of the, maybe some forgotten, iconic groups from the 90s was All Saints. They were known for their edgy style and quite a soulful pop sound. And the song that we're going to play now was released in 1997 and was their opening hit, Never Ever. It actually became one of All Saints' biggest hits, topping the charts in the UK and earning them a Brit Award for Best Single. The song's heartfelt lyrics and harmony struck a chord with listeners, cementing the group's place in 90s and indeed pop's history. All Saints stood out on their own in the girl group scene for their blend of R&B, pop and a touch of attitude, bringing a fresh sound that set them apart from their contemporaries. So we're going to go back now to All Saints with Never Ever. A few questions that I need to know How you could ever hurt me so I need to know what I've done wrong And how long it's been going on Was it that I never paid enough attention Or did I not give enough affliction Not only will your answers keep me sane But I'll know never to make the same mistake again You can tell me to my face Or even on the phone You can write it in a letter Either way I have to know Did I never treat you right Did I always start the fight Either way I'm going out of my mind All the answers to my questions I have to find My head's spinning Boy I'm in a state I feel isolated I don't want to communicate I'll take a shower I will scour I will roam To find peace of mind The happy mind I wonder Yeah Texting vocabulary runs right through me The alphabet runs right from day to day Conversations, hesitations in my mind You got my consciousness in questions that I can't find I'm not crazy I'm sure I haven't done nothing wrong No I'm just waiting Cause I heard that the ceiling won't rest that long Never ever have I ever felt so low When you're gonna take me out of this life Oh never ever have I ever felt so sad The way I'm feeling yeah you got me feeling really bad Never ever have I had to find I had to give away to find my own peace of mind I never ever had my consciousness to decide The way I'm feeling yeah it just don't feel right I'll keep searching Deep within my soul For all the answers Don't wanna hurt no more I need peace Gotta feel at ease I need to be Free from pain Go insane My heart aches Yeah Sometimes vocabulary runs through my head The alphabet runs right from season Conversations, hesitations in my mind You got my consciousness and questions that I can't find I'm not crazy I'm sure I haven't done nothing wrong No I'm just waiting Cause I heard that the ceiling won't rest that long Never ever have I ever felt so low When you're gonna take me out of this life Oh never ever have I ever felt so sad The way I'm feeling yeah you got me feeling really bad Never ever have I had to find I had to give away to find my own peace of mind I never ever had my consciousness to decide The way I'm feeling yeah it just don't feel right In the mid 90s the R&B scene was thriving and TLC, Boyz II Men and Mary J. Blige were in the charts providing their classics and among them was a British artist who we're going to hear next who made a massive impact with his debut single and that comes from 1996 In that year Mark Morrison released Return of the Mack a song that quickly became a global hit With its rather catchy hook and his distinctive voice it topped the charts in several countries and solidified his place in music history The track is about redemption and making a triumphant comeback themes that's resonated with many of his fans Return of the Mack is a quintessential 90s R&B anthem which blends smooth vocals with a groove that makes you want to get up and dance So here it is without any further ado Mark Morrison and the Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Return of the Mack Mark Morrison there with Return of the Mack and we're going to stick in 1996 and we're going to now go to a song that can be defined as an anthem and quite topical at the minute with the Euros going on this was also released in 1996 by the deal and skin of the comedians with the lightning seeds and it captured the spirit and hopes of England's football fans during the European Championships which actually being held in England in 1996 now three lines perfectly encapsulates the mix of optimism and nostalgia that every football fan feels the chorus it's coming home has become synonymous with English football and is still chanted by fans during major tournaments and it will be for the next few weeks 1996 was actually quite a significant year for football in the UK with the national team making it to the semi-finals here in 96 before being knocked out on penalties to Germany I'm sure that's something we've heard before and we'll hear many times afterwards the song's impact though was so profound it was re-released both in 1998 and 2018 and it topped the UK charts both times so just in the next three and a half minutes let's relieve that excitement and that hope it will just come home for the next three and a half minutes I think it's bad news for them this year we're not creative enough, we're not positive enough it's coming home, it's coming home it's coming home, it's coming home we'll go on getting back, on getting back, on getting back we'll go on getting back, on getting back football's coming home, it's coming home it's coming home, it's coming home football's coming home, it's coming home it's coming home, it's coming home football's coming home everyone's missing out the stars they've seen it all before, they just know they're so sure that England's gonna throw it away gonna throw it away but I know they can play cos I remember the eyes on the shirt Jules Vermeer still gleaming 30 years apart never stopped me dreaming so many jokes, so many sneers but all those also mean when you're down through the years but I still see that tackle by Moore and when Riddick has scored Bobby Bell's in the ball I know they can play cos I remember the eyes on the shirt Jules Vermeer still gleaming 30 years apart never stopped me dreaming so I can see again it's coming home, it's coming home football's coming home, it's coming home it's coming home, it's coming home football's coming home, it's coming home it's coming home, it's coming home football's coming home, it's coming home it's coming home, it's coming home football's coming home, it's coming home eyes on the shirt, it's coming Jules Vermeer still gleaming 30 years apart never stopped me dreaming eyes on the shirt, it's coming Jules Vermeer still gleaming 30 years apart never stopped me dreaming eyes There ain't nobody like an Eskimo party There ain't nobody like an Eskimo party There ain't nobody like an Eskimo party With that rather energetic look from the late 90s pop we're going to go into the heart of the 90s and the Brit Rock era with one of the era's defining bands, Pulp. Now the mid-90s saw many bands of the same ilk such as Oasis, Blur and Eddie Pulp dominating the scene. This song of Pulp's was released in 1995 but actually relates to something just outside the 1990s. It is Disco 2000 and one of their most iconic tracks. Frontman Jarvis Coffer's storytelling shines through in this nostalgic tale of unrequited love and growing up. The catchy riff of the song and the quite relatable lyrics and his delivery made it an instant hit and a staple of 90s music. 1995 in general was a vibrant year for Brit Rock with Pulp's album Different Class becoming a major success and capturing the essence of British youth culture at the time. So let's go back and enjoy Pulp with Disco 2000. Oh we were born within an hour of each other Our mother said we could be sister and brother Your name is Deborah Deborah And never sister yet And they said that when we grew up We'd get married and never split up Oh we never did it Although I often thought of it As something I could see in the dark Your house was very small With wood chips on the wall When I came round to call You didn't notice me at all Oh and I said Let's hold it up in the year 2000 Won't it be strange when we're all fully grown Sit there till we're caught by the fountain down the road I never knew that you'd get married That I would be living down here on my own Oh and that's not the moment They say it's a girl You're the best girl at school to get around And mine said that you were the best I was a boy for last year but I was the next I had to work some day and get you undressed We were friends and it was as far as it went I used to walk you home sometimes but it meant I wasn't in love with you yet You were so popular Deborah And you were caught And your house was very small With wood chips on the wall When I came round to call You didn't notice me at all Oh and I said Let's hold it up in the year 2000 Won't it be strange when we're all fully grown Sit there till we're caught by the fountain down the road I never knew that you'd get married That I would be living down here on my own Oh and that's not the moment They say it's a girl Oh yeah Oh yeah I just wish you'd recall And your house was very small With wood chips on the wall When I came round to call You didn't notice me at all Oh and I said Let's hold it up in the year 2000 Won't it be strange when we're all fully grown Sit there till we're caught by the fountain down the road I never knew that you'd get married That I would be living down here on my own Oh and that's not the moment They say it's a girl Oh what are you doing Sunday baby Would you ever come and meet me maybe You can't even bring your baby What are you doing Sunday baby Would you ever come and meet me maybe You can't even bring your baby Up there with this year 2000 Absolutely phenomenal track from the 90s and unfortunately we've come to the end of our look back through the 90s and so to play us out is perhaps one of the biggest hits It comes from 1996 and it's a track from Oasis' second album What's the Story? Morning Glory which dominated the charts and the radio airwaves and this song in particular has endured as a timeless classic So thank you very much for listening this evening and I give you that Rebecca Manker Slip inside the eye of your mind Don't you know you might find A better place to play You say that you'll never be But all the things that you've seen Slowly fade away So I start a revolution from my pain Cause you set the brains I had west of my head Step outside, solitizing And stand up beside the fireplace Take that look from off your face You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out And so Sally can wait She knows it's too late As we're walking on by Her soul slides away But don't look back in anger I heard you say Take me to the place where you go Where nobody knows It's not our day But please don't put your life in the hands Of a rock and roll band We'll throw it all away I'm gonna start a revolution from my pain Cause you set the brains I had west of my head Step outside, solitizing And stand up beside the fireplace Take that look from off your face You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out And so Sally can wait She knows it's too late As we're walking on by Her soul slides away But don't look back in anger I heard you say I heard you say And so Sally can wait She knows it's too late As we're walking on by Her soul slides away But don't look back in anger I heard you say And so Sally can wait She knows it's too late As we're walking on by Her soul slides away But don't look back in anger Don't look back in anger I heard you say I heard you say I heard you say
