Basketball is a popular sport, with the NBA being the most popular league. Kentucky is known for its collegiate basketball. This podcast focuses on the basic rules of basketball, including the court dimensions, positions, and goal of the game. Scoring is done by putting the ball through the hoop, and teams can also defend by stealing the ball or blocking shots. Kicking the ball or fouling is not allowed. Fouls result in penalties like free throws or time stoppages. Flagrant and technical fouls can also be called. If the game is tied, overtime periods are played until one team outscores the other. Basketball is a sport that I am sure most people have some degree of knowledge about. It is a beloved game and very popular in the United States. The NBA, or the National Basketball Association, is the most popular basketball league in the world. Kentucky is known for its collegiate basketball, with the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville being very dominant over the years. I'm sure your high school even had a team. The focus of this podcast is not about the NBA or even college basketball. Instead, I want to do a breakdown of the basic rules for the game of basketball. Basketball is played on a specifically designed court that is rectangular in shape and is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide at the largest level. There is a half-court line, a three-point arc on both ends, and a free-throw line on both ends. There is also a goal on each end, one being for one team and vice versa. Basketball is played in a five-versus-five format with substitutions available for each team. Common on-court lineups consist of a point guard, a shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and a center. The goal of the game is to score more points than the other team within the allotted time. To score, you have to put the ball through the hoop. You can do so by shooting it from a distance or laying it in from close range. Your team can also defend the other team from scoring. You can steal the ball from them or block their shot. You cannot kick the ball as this will result in a penalty. You may also not foul the other team or else a penalty will be given. A foul is when there is unnecessary roughness against the opposing team that results in their shot being altered, them losing the ball, or injury. The penalty for a foul in the act of shooting is called a free throw. The player who is fouled will get an opportunity to shoot a shot from the free throw line with no one defending them. The penalty for any other variation of a foul is a time stoppage and reset of that team's possession. Flagrant and technical fouls can also be called during a game. Flagrant fouls are usually issued when extreme roughness with or without intent is initiated between players. Technical fouls are most commonly given when a player or a coach is acting foolishly outside of the game. Some examples of a technical foul are fights during time stoppages, coaches yelling at referees, or even fans being a nuisance. A game of basketball cannot end in a tie. If the score of both teams is the same at the end of the regulation time, an overtime period of five minutes will be played. These overtime periods will be played until one team has outscored the other. There are many more small rules that make the game of basketball great, but unfortunately I am out of time for today. Come back next week to learn about backcourt violations and the shot clock.
