The speaker discusses various topics in a casual conversation with a friend. They talk about their experience in the business club, their plans for graduation, and their decision to pursue a minor in real estate. They also mention their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, including online classes and a summer abroad program. The conversation includes anecdotes about traveling and encountering robotic dinosaurs. Okay, so this is the podcast, the Corner Word podcast. I'm here with Alyssa Diasis, our CSB president of the business club and also a very good friend. Dude, how are you? Hello, I'm doing good. It's a Friday. It's amazing that they're out. I love it. Yo, Friday the 13th, man. Dude, so how are you? Like, what have you done today? It's like week three in our quarter and we're off to the races. Like, I know business club, we had the Beach Respers and that went well. We had like real meat for the first time. It was so awesome. Off-campus, off-campus. But yeah, I just want to talk about a little bit how my quarter's been so far. Ayos, go ahead, go ahead. Okay, so it's my junior year this year. I'm graduating in June. I'm so excited. It's a little scary because it's like... Yeah, next is like the real world, right? Yeah, and I'm like, okay, I'm in school, right? And then I have like my job but it's kind of focused on that stuff. So I have to like take what I got from these experiences and now apply it. It's not just like take it all in, leadership. So it's a little scary because it's like, it hasn't much work to put into it. It's not even going to get out. Exactly. Or enough experience that you can bring in. Yeah. Okay, I don't think it was until like this summer. I don't know why. But for context, so I'm a double major in business marketing and business management. Even though it says that she's accounting. Yeah, okay. So I came in the class of 2020 and I didn't know I was a double major until the end of my second quarter of my first year. And then I looked on my portal, right? And it's like, you're freshman, it's new, and it says accounting. Oh boy. And I was like, that's not for me. But then I turned to team management and I'm still going to finish in four years. Yeah, four years, man. I'm also getting a minor in real estate. Yeah. How does that work? Like, did I've never heard of a real estate minor. So like, you're one of the first. Can you tell us? Okay, so it's new. So it started in 2020 is like the date that they actually opened it. I didn't know about it until basically the end of my sophomore year, like winter, spring quarter. And I was like, oh my gosh, all these shows that I've been watching. Do you watch Selling Sunset? No, they don't actually talk. What? Yeah, it's staged. So it's like, they might have sold those houses, maybe, because they're still like life on the real estate. Yeah. But it's actually staged. Come on, man. Wait, wait, wait. Did you watch the previous season? Yeah. Wait, wait, wait. Season four. Season four. I think they're season six. Dude, are you not? Dude, you need to because I think they just did it. No way. Yeah, way. I think so. I might be wrong. Okay, so why do you want to be like a real estate licensed person? Yeah, so I was just kind of referenced with how, I guess, that opportunity came about. So, like I said, I always enjoyed watching shows when I was at home. One, I love cooking shows. Wait, do you watch the British baking show? Oh my gosh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But anyway, so it stems from that. And I'm just kind of like really focused on watching real estate shows, like people selling properties. I forgot, there's this one that was always played like on Google TV and it's like, you know, they're selling houses or like flipping it. I don't know. So basically, I was like that. And then when I found out that the minor was offered, I went and met with the advisor from last year. Shout out to Miss Patricia. Hey, we miss you. And so I found out I was going to graduate a quarter early. And I was like, so here's what's going to happen. So you can graduate a quarter early if you overload your winter quarter. And I was like, hmm. And then I was like, what are the other options? Because I know the real estate minor, I've only briefly just heard about an option. She's like, you can also do that. And what you do is, like, the way we set it up is that I take a real estate course per quarter. And then I literally, each quarter I take one and then it helps me. Like, I think I just have to take two in one quarter. It's like a management, but it counts as real estate. And then I can graduate with it. So my spring quarter, I'll be finishing my seventh class to get the real estate minor. Okay. Yeah. So I have the option to kind of graduate a quarter early. In that moment, I was like, it made me think about, you know, 2020. Yeah. I needed a class that got online. I went to a public school. I just remember in March of 2020, everything closed. Like, I don't know. What time was that, bro? That's crazy. I just remember I had this blur to, like, think that's already almost four years ago. Like, three and a half. Dude, it feels like a blink of an eye, bro. Yeah. Like, I just kind of remember, like, I was in AP government. AP government, bro? I was in AP government in New Orleans, okay? I was in New Orleans. And my professor and my teacher was like, hey, we just got an email that school is going to, you know, we're going to go an extra week for spring break. Yeah. And I just kind of remember, like, oh, my gosh, that's amazing. Like, who wants to go to school, right? And then... Boo, boo, do we know? It was so bad. But I have this picture. It's somewhere else in my room at home in San Diego. And I have that picture I took with my friends, like, before school, like, ended. So we put the, like, phone on the ground. We all leaned over. And it was, like, a rainy day that day. And we all did this. And we're like, cool, uh, spring break for two weeks. Yay. Oh, my. And I have that picture. And it's kind of crazy to think back and, you know, kind of think that, like, it was a good thing that that happened. But then we went online for a year. Yeah. So that's kind of crazy. Yeah. I think in the way that, like, that helped me shape where I am, helped me make the decision to, you know, add a minor. Yeah. At this time is the moment that I was, like, okay, should I add the minor? And just, like, push it out for the four years instead of graduating a quarter early. I was thinking of, like, the experience that I couldn't get from that senior year. I was like, oh, my gosh. Like, I didn't get that experience. I don't want to have to miss out on any other experiences. Even though, like, I achieved graduating a quarter early, which I think is great. But, like, in my specific scenario, I was like, gosh, that's taking away from me. Like, you know, I can't lose anymore than what I already lost. Exactly. You know, I could have done, like, a, I don't know, like, a three-week vacation. Exactly. Bro, people are VK-ing. We're having, like, trips abroad. Yeah. And I was actually lucky to do that this summer. Yeah. Something offered through the school business is that, you know, is that they offer a summer abroad, basically, when you schedule for eight units or eight units plus of business classes, which is summer courses online, and you actually get a trip out of it. So we went to East Asia this summer, which is something I would have actually never imagined myself doing. It's so crazy. This is, they've done it a few years pre-COVID, but this is actually their third year. Yeah. Yeah. And, like, how much was that? Because I was misinformed. Okay. First of all, y'all said it was, like, 5K. It was, like, 7? No, yeah. It was pricey, but it's the price of tuition. So you're paying the eight units of tuition and then... A couple, like, with food and, like, travel. Yeah. I would, like, if you guys are trying to study with the ZSB, like, abroad, I would definitely try to make it a point to go abroad and, like, see different perspectives and cultures. Of course, I wasn't able to, but, you know, other reasons. But, like, I would totally, like, recommend if you guys can do. And, like, what were some highlights of that experience? The food. Yeah. I mean, we'll find out. Whoa. Osaka? What's that famous for? Like, there's something famous about it. Part two, part two, guys. Part two, we spent a night there. It was probably, like, almost 11 hours on the plane, but they feed you. So it's, like, the planes that have, like, I don't really travel out of the country often, so my family, we travel every summer, like, from state to state. But this is, like, my first time for, like, a long time going out of the country. So you have, like, the plane, and it's, like, three side seats, and then you have four seats in the middle. It's a huge, giant thing. You got first class. First class. I was a little in front of the bathroom. Hey, yo, that's the thing. That's the thing. One day. One day, bro. And then I can just, like, fully lay down and sleep on the plane. But that was an experience. You know, after a while, it comes down. You get a little cramped, bro. It's so crampy, you have to, like, walk around. They feed you lunch, and then you're going through, like, when you get there, it's, like, a time chain, so then it was night time by the time you got there, because you left kind of afternoon time from LAX. Then we got there, we retired from traveling, and then we get to this hotel, and there's this dinosaur at the check-in table. It's a robotic dinosaur. Like, moving and everything? Okay, I'll tell you about it in kind of a picture. Dr. Chua, he is the main one that plans this trip. Yeah, shout out to Dr. Chua. Amazing. So he, like, goes up and he's, like, you know, trying to find our, like, hotel rooms, making sure that we all, like, are seating in the rooms, our room key. And then we look, and we're like, oh my gosh, there's dinosaurs. And then you go up to it. Real life. There's literally two dinosaurs. And we're like, what is this place? Oh my. It's pretty funny. We're tired, we're hungry, because we were supposed to eat at the restaurant, like, there. And then we had to talk to them for service. Oh boy. But they were there, and they kind of, like, scare you. We have a video of, like, one of the dinosaurs. Oh, no. Heck no. I'll try to find a picture later. So we did that. We got dinner. You know, it's the culture that they bow, you bow back. Courtesy. Yeah, courtesy. You want to make sure to, like, be really respectful. Do a little bit of research. Yeah, the laws, man. Yeah. If you're a visitor in this country, and you want to obviously respect, like, the items that they follow, and then just make sure you're doing that. Because obviously, if you're different in America, and they just want to make sure, like, the things you would do here, if they're not okay there, yeah. That's my advice, too. I think everyone there was respectful, and I think we did the research before. It's just something to note, too. You guys had a really good group, so I'm like, yeah. We all got really close. I think it was just, like, the time we all spent together, too, like, traveling, and, like, we all got to experience that experience together. It's just amazing. But then after that, we did Penang, Malaysia, after, and then we did Singapore, and then we did Kuala Lumpur. Yeah. And then on the way back, we actually landed in Tokyo, or we took, and, you know, like, a Subway thingy to get to Tokyo, and then, like, one of the highlights, this is the last day before I'm coming home, we walked the Shibuya crosswalk. Okay. Hundreds of people can cross at the same time. Hundreds? Yeah, like, it's literally, like, it probably goes, like, maybe four or five ways. Like, it crosses, like, fifth, like, fifth, and then, like, one more. So people are just with their umbrellas, they're crossing, it's a hot, humid day out, I'm like, I'm wearing sweats and a short sleeve from, like, the plane, you know, you want to be comfy. I'm like, wow, it's an outdoor walkway. I'm just, like, being in the walkway. It was such an experience and I'm just going to forever, like, be grateful for that I did that. And I definitely advise people to do it. Like, even if it's not that, you can travel to the language programs to get your language certified, Spain, Italy, and then you can travel to Italy. That was so much fun! And we'll see you for the rest of the quarter. Yeah, over the rest of the year, bro. I mean, like, I did a quarter in Italy. I don't do a quarter in Italy. Yo, plan your time. Because, like, you can extend your four years for, like, five years or six years, but make sure you're financially there and also ready to move on with the world and ready to say, you know, goodbye for a time. Yeah, so, um, being a ZSB boss, boss woman, how has that helped you? How do you like the job? Like, right now, when do you have to plan for events? You know, like, I know when I talked to Lovelyn this summer for doing the podcast, she was already doing stuff for week five, and I was like, we're too much out! Yeah, like, if you're trying to do something with ZSB or anything, and even if people around you are not that much organized, make sure you're prepared to step in and make sure everyone is on top of things, as well as just ready to execute when needed. Like, you see various times that last year where we wanted to do something, but just because the planning or something happened, like, we couldn't do it just because we didn't have the plans in place. So, you guys, being ZSB, I know you guys are on top of things because of Lovelyn. Shout out to Lovelyn! I love her. She's amazing. Everyone should have a Lovelyn in their school. Just because, like, if you want something done, and if you want someone to believe in you, and want to be hard on you, not necessarily hard, but she knows how to train you for the real world and not to dim your light, but also to just raise you up, you know? Yeah, I know. I think definitely there's a lot of prep work, and the word that we always use is I think our YouTube is still, like, it's weird. It's like, there's a lot of logistics that come into play. So, logistically, there's a lot of planning to make an event be an event, and just kind of, like, all the prep work that goes in it. I think just being on, like, the school business team, it's allowed me to see all the, like, behind the scenes prep work. How much work goes into making an event happen, and then, like, I take that, and I'm going to a concert, right? And, like, looking around, I'm like, oh, wow. They have their logo. They have, like, the seeds. Like, everything is planned before, and then you're only of course, like, as a guest, you were going to enjoy it. You want to make the most of it, but the people planning it, they want to make sure that the guests enjoy themselves. They have food. We always want to provide food, and so, like, that's kind of a thing. And they always provide food. Yeah. I think, too, we have a lot of students in the school business, and it's, you know, it's always something to just bond over food. Like, I feel like I do that a lot with friends. It's like, hey, like, what are you doing? Oh, you want to go get some food? I think that every one of us here, like, we're near so many boba places, and then tacos. Like, I go to Tacos Y Mas, Los Cabos, like, shout out to them, but, like, dude, if you need, like, a quick bite, and, like, you have friends, and, like, oh, if you have friends. If you had a... Yeah, call us, and we'll definitely come and run with you to get tacos and boba, bro. That's, like... Wait, what's your favorite boba place, bro? Okay, so, I mean, I'm from San Diego, so there's, like, home ones that I go to, but over here, there's probably, we cater a lot of R&B tea. Yeah. When we get it here, I'll, like, drink it there. It's, like, for my college budget. It's a little pricey. I mean, like, it's a tad. Like, for me, like, like, for me, I love a good tapioca. Like, you know, like, R&B, it's, like, you know, you know, the tea. Yeah, the tea. Hey, I've never heard of it. Bro, 25 minutes away? You're like, oh, Momo, bro. Yeah, I like the classic milk tea, bro. Like, I can't do matcha, though, from there, man. Like, it's too earthy for me. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Oh, yeah. Oh, ramen. Ramen bar, bro. Yeah, shout out to Salsu. Yeah. Yeah, we were watching, um, the new Spider-Man movie. I think we were, um, during that time, but, yeah. Um, that was, I think, no, that was during my, never, nevermind. But, um, just to kind of bring it back to, like, what I've been seeing with, like, the logistics of all that, I feel like I'm going up to my third year being on this team of the school business. I got hired my sophomore year as we were going in person. So, basically, my freshman, it was my sophomore year, like, academically, but I felt like a freshman. Same. Yeah. My style, it was, like, shorts and a shirt. Like, I wasn't expecting, like, I was expecting, like, 80 degrees. I was expecting no rain, no, like, snow. I was just, like, in there. And then, like, you know, trends. But we can talk about, we can talk about style part two, but, um, but, yeah, when you are at a point where you first were in online school and now you're, like, you know, whatever, and, um, your second year, it was, like, a very freshman-y experience. Yeah. It was all new. I feel like whenever I, like, approach something new, it's kind of like, okay, take it all in, but, like, make sure, too, you're, like, enjoying it. Because I feel like, too, I'm like, okay, like, Let's do it. Like, I have to get all this. And, like, I'm mini-straight. And, like, I was going, you know, like, by, like, the things that, like, the website would say you need. Go in, like, if you have, like, a roommate. I got a, um, assigned roommate. Yeah. Was it Alyssa? Was it? Allison, sorry. I know. Oh, yeah, Melissa! Yo, Melissa's at Southern right now. Shout out to Melissa. She's doing awesome. But, yeah, she was my first roommate. Random assigned roommate. You do, like, an application. It's kind of like a, like a dating application. Like, you're filling in your morning routine. Are you clean? Are you messy? Do you, um, what do you enjoy? And then we got assigned. And I was like, we did an email, right? I was like, Melissa, Alyssa, that kind of rhymes. I'm like, someone who sets this up. This is really funny. Um, so we meet, and I tell them, so when I'm on the team, I came a week early before school started to do leadership training. And leadership training is basically where, like, we've been doing the prep work. I got onto the team, but it's kind of like we're already putting the stuff into play. I was all new, so everything, I didn't really know much. I just knew I had to go to school business for training. Yeah. We were going to do headshot pictures for LinkedIn. We were going to do other items. Yeah, just, yeah, um, just to say, like, the ZSB offers headshots, um, like, once or twice a year. So if you have a LinkedIn account without a headshot, like, definitely hit them up, because we have time for that. Oh, my goodness. You're actually doing that? I won't be, I won't be done editing this, but we, the firms, but, but future us, future you. So this is a new event. It's called Weeks Firm. And it's our 40th. It's Sam Cross Weeks Firm. And it's basically where we invite third-party firms, companies, uh, you know, family businesses, small businesses, and we have them represent themselves. And this is like, you know, it's like we're a convention center. We have a lot of people here at the school business, and it's amazing to see third parties come in. Have you seen the guest list yet? No, I haven't. Give us the, yo, give us the rundown, even though they'll see it before. Yeah, this is like future, so I guess, I guess now that you've attended, you saw them. If you were able to see This is future us. future us speaking. Bro, dude, like, we gotta, like, have 10 steps ahead, bro. I know, but, here, let me get the list real quick. So, we just finalized it yesterday, and this is gonna go out to everyone in like an email, but it already went out to the, like, not just students yet, but to all the people that are making this event happen. Meet the firms. There's a countdown. This is the website. And then you scroll down, and it's all of them. So, I'll just talk about the ones that you see every year. So, while Jackie's looking, I'm just gonna say, we've had a lot of, we have a lot of hospitals, through some of the advocacy community, advocacy health, that come a lot. They do luncheons, so it's really the opportunity to get the experience of before you meet them at a conference. I mean, you would already have met them. You're doing a luncheon with them. Interesting. You're doing a luncheon with them, and you kind of get the, like, it's like in a group setting downstairs in our conference room. You get to have lunch with them. You get to ask questions in a one-on-one style, as much as a group setting, but more one-on-one with the speaker and that. And we work really hard to get that happening so that we can set up the students with an internship, with the experience that they need, and it's also skills, too. Like, I forget that whenever I'm doing these events, I'm also gaining, like, talking skills, you know, the soft skills that I feel like always come with the practice. The soft skills are not talked about enough, guys. I feel like, too, in 2020, I'm, you know, in my room, going on. You can send it to yourself, too, because we're going to share. So it's going to get shared soon. But it was like I was losing those soft skills because I wouldn't interact as much with people, and then I got a job in the summer. I need to have an emoji on my name, like, personally. I don't have an emoji? No. I'm sorry. Okay, I just went through and I went through and put everyone's name in lowercase. I know it's not grammatically correct, but I couldn't see it in capital letters. I put everyone's name in lowercase. I took off all emojis. I played soccer for 12 years. You played soccer? I played soccer! Dude, I played soccer, man. Wait, at your high school? Yeah, at my high school, bro. I played soccer at my high school, but I also played competitive club. Yo, you were good? Yes! She was good, guys. She was good. To be a soccer kid. Yeah. Yo, respect your parents, guys. Appreciate your parents. Yeah, nah. You're gonna have to have the 40 minutes away at least. At most. At most. Yeah. Awesome. Okay, okay. So, hmm. Should we take a break or give us the rundown of hmm. We already said meet the firms. Everything. Your story on... Can we talk about my club a bit? Yeah. Let's do it, and then we'll take a break. And then we'll talk about the main thing, our Corner Word Podcast. We like to interview our guests and say their opinion on what is truth, what is love, and what is purpose. And Alyssa said in a text that she... I think a lot of people have a lot more to say about love than truth and purpose, but we're gonna talk about that. But before, let's hear about her club. Oh yeah, my friend Alva. Yes, Alva Garcia. Yeah, she does that. You got to. It wasn't good. Hey, hey, practice. Practice, guys. Yes. Practice makes patience. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
