Keith Marshall discusses ways to have a prosperous 2024, both personally and for Radford City. He emphasizes the importance of putting God first and reinstating prayer in city council meetings. He also encourages honesty about personal and city problems in order to address and fix them. Some of the city's problems include financial difficulties and the need for better administration. Overall, Keith believes that by prioritizing God and being honest, positive changes can be made in the upcoming year. I don't believe in superstars, organic food and foreign cars I don't believe the price of gold, the certainty of growing old That right is right and left is wrong, that north and south can't get along That east is east and west is west, and be it first is always best I believe in love, I believe in babies I believe in mom and dad, and I believe in you I definitely believe in babies, especially grandbabies I'm your host Keith Marshall, and let's go one more round The only thing we have to fear is fear itself Tears down this wall We will make America great again I say something that you don't want to listen to, don't listen One more round Hey, welcome to One More Round Podcast. I'm your host, as always, Keith Marshall And today we're kind of going to do our end of the year, last episode of 2023 So what better a title, or what better a subject could we pick Than how to make 2024 a prosperous year for both you and Radford City Now how do the two go together? Well, I don't know if they really do But I'm putting them together today, and we're going to talk about a few topics That I think are important for yourself and for Radford City To have a prosperous 2024 Now, I hope you and yours have had a wonderful Christmas this holiday season I know that I have. It's been a little tougher this year I mentioned that we lost our mother, and it was sad not having her here for the first time But it's been quite a blessing when I thought about the fact That she got to spend her first Christmas in many years with my dad A healthy, healthy Danny Marshall And I'm really excited about that, but more important than that She got to spend her first Christmas with Jesus in Heaven With all of her family, her mother and father and others that have passed So that's really exciting when you think about that And much more important, much more important than our sadness here Missing her here at our Christmas celebration But I want to get right back in there, and I want to talk about a few areas That I believe, if you follow these That you can have a prosperous 2024 And I believe Radford City can too Now let me tell you ahead of time I am not a self-help guru I am not a psychologist I'm certainly not someone who runs a how to make your life better seminar These are just a few points that I follow myself And that I focus on And I want to tell you this As I talk about some of these subjects I'm kind of preaching to the choir myself too Because I have to follow these same things And I have to push myself to make sure that I'm improving myself for 2024 And there's a lot to get done I'll have to say There's a lot of things to fix And a lot of cracks to fill When it comes to Keith Marshall And I suspect if you're honest with yourself You'll have kind of the same thoughts So I want to list them And I have five of them And I'm sure there's ten of them But I'm going to list five here today And I'm going to start with the most important And I'm not going to make you wait to the end to get the first Like I did in another episode there a while back I'm going to talk about number one first And the first thing that you can do The very first thing you can do To have a more prosperous 2024 To have a better year to look forward to And that's to put God first He should be most important in everything that you do And I know that I am super guilty of that not being the case He's way down the list with me most of the times Even though I want to do that Even though I plan to do that I don't seem to get that done But it's important to me to do that in 2024 And I want to tell you I don't know how you believe And I'm not here to proselytize Or to preach on this podcast But I am here to share my heart sometimes And I really think If you'll make God first If you'll make that your number one priority Your relationship with Him And your family's relationship with Him Then your 2024 is going to be a lot better Now, is that just my opinion? Did I just come up with that? Is that something that That I alone think is the most important thing to do? Well, no, it's not It's actually something specifically that Jesus was asked When He was here on Earth You know, there were some Pharisees and some others They were always trying to trip Him up They were always trying to ask Him tough questions Or get Him to say something that would You know, somehow get Him in trouble Or create a case against Him They had a lot of trouble with that Obviously, He knew what they were thinking Before they asked the question He knew what their plan was But in this particular case It's found here in the Gospel of Matthew In chapter 22 And they got a lawyer One of the lawyers They even had lawyers then, believe it or not But they got one of the lawyers To kind of try to trip Him up And it says here in verse 34 It says, hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees They had been trying to trip Him up too The Pharisees got together And one of them, an expert in the law Tested Him with a question And he asked this in verse 36 He said, and he's speaking to Jesus He says, Teacher You know, you remember the law The law was more than just the Ten Commandments There was a lot more to it But they asked Him of everything What is the most important thing? What is the most important thing? And Jesus drilled right down on this And I think, without hesitation He answered this And He says, Jesus replied And here's what He said Love the Lord your God With all your heart And with all your soul And with all your mind This is the first and greatest commandment So hey, number one I learned this from Jesus Himself I learned it right from the Bible The most important thing that you can do in 2024 Is to put God first Put Him number one Now I told you that I was going to be Saying about what you could do And what the city could do So I want to have a number one for the city too And I think one of the most important And one of the smartest things That they could do Is reinstitute the prayer In city council meetings Not a moment of silence Not a time of reflection But an actual prayer An actual prayer They used to do that I know when Horton was elected mayor And they took over back in 2000 I guess 18 July That was the first thing they did in their meeting Was to end prayer at city council meetings I thought that was wrong then I still think it's wrong I think it was the very first Opening salvo Into a poor administration That began then That we're going to list Some of the effects of here today But I think they should reinstitute that I believe we have the votes to do that If some would have the desire And the courage to do that And I believe that should be number one That should be first God first on our list And reinstituting that prayer And showing the proper respect For the providence and the authority of God In the council meetings I believe that should be number one Number two Be honest about where you're at Now for us If you're like me It's real easy to Kind of ignore some of our faults Isn't it? I'm real good at Painting a rosy picture About everything that's going around me And leaving out some of the warts That I'm seeing in the mirror And the truth of it is We can't expect to fix anything in our life And you can't expect to fix anything in the city If you're not willing to identify What the problems are You know the old saying that Denial is not just a river in Egypt Which is true If you don't It's hard to fix a problem That you will not acknowledge that you have So if there's something in your life That's causing you trouble Maybe it's You're having trouble in your marriage Or maybe it's finances Maybe you're worried about one of your children Or a couple children Your grandchildren You know I think it's important That you define What those problems is Put it down on a big white sheet of paper And put it right in front of your face I have a problem Right here I'm struggling with this It'll help your prayer life It'll help your personal life With your marriage It'll help your relationship with your kids To specifically know Hey These are my problems I don't know I hope you're unlike me And you don't have any problems But I suspect You're just like everybody else You have doubts You have fears You have problems That are going on in your life You're not perfect Things you'd like to correct Hey Define those Write them down Put them right in front of your face So you can see what they are And then we can start talking about A plan to take care of them But until you identify them Until you admit to them Until you're honest with yourself And others about it You're going to have a hard time You're going to have a hard time fixing them Now, Rafford City itself It's got quite a list of problems You know, we've went through a lot of those In the episodes that we've been doing In 2023 And I'm going to list a few of them Number one, the city's in bad financial shape We saw that demonstrated here In the last week or so When for the first time in a number of years The city was not able to give their employees A Christmas bonus Now, I don't get a Christmas bonus You know, a lot of people don't get a Christmas bonus And that's neither here nor there That's really not what I'm trying to put emphasis on The fact is We found out about this financial problem If you haven't listened to the episode Where Rafford remained an independent city I encourage you to go back and listen to that And this will make a lot better sense to you But we know that they have a financial problem They've had to borrow money In order to make payroll And to pay their bills And in the financial situation they're in I think it makes perfect sense To not have a Christmas bonus this year As much as hard working as our employees are And as much as we'd like to You know, give them something To thank them for their hard work The fact is If you can't afford it, you can't afford it You don't get bonuses When you don't have any extra money But the point I'd like to make is They're still out denying that they ever had a financial problem They're still out talking about Oh, we're on budget and we're still doing this Well, here's the truth They're picking which bills they can pay When they can pay them And this is just a symptom of the overall problem We're struggling financially It's time we admit that And in order to solve the problems Going ahead to fix that problem We've got to be honest about exactly where we're at As far as that problem There's also a problem in the city Where there's a purposeful intent Or design To not comply with the city structure The managerial and council structure That's set up for our form of government It's all out of whack Our city council as a whole body Is not in control of the city We're being controlled by one person That needs to be fixed That needs to be addressed We need to realize that that's a problem And we need to correct that We've got another problem with RU and their proxy Running the city We're not running our own city We're allowing Rafford University By proxy of one of their employees To push the narrative Of what direction we're going to go in the city I don't think that's right We need to realize that that's going on We need to identify that that's an issue There's growing disunity among employees in the city One department's resenting another department Or feeling like another one's getting Extra treatment or extra perks That other people are not getting I know those things happen everywhere But I hear a lot from people I'm on the street I'm around this a lot Especially since I started this podcast I'm having more and more and more information Come in to me And that's a prevalent theme That I'm starting to see And that's disgruntled employees Not feeling like they're being treated fairly And that disunity's kind of growing Our expenditures in the city Are exceeding our income It makes sense You don't run out of money Until you start spending more than you have in So that's a problem We're losing the market Or the market is shrinking As far as our selling of electricity And water Having the new Cogen facility For Radford University And losing Montgomery County sales to water That's a problem We've got to identify it We've got to make something happen there We're seeing the poverty rate In the city of Radford Continue to just drain the lifeblood Right out of the city Homelessness is a growing concern It's reaching epidemic levels If you haven't listened to the podcast On the homeless of Radford You need to hear that It's going to shock you When you hear some of those things We're seeing an increase In drug and gang activity Particularly down in the east end of town I'm sure you didn't read it in the paper Or anywhere else But I worked through a law enforcement source And I confirmed that we did have Over a couple weekends ago We had an apartment building shot up About 15 shots fired into the building Sounded like it went through windows And it was gang related A group out of Roanoke So you're not reading that in the paper We don't have a real newspaper Or anybody that's really reporting the news We're hearing things on Facebook And wondering what's true and what's not true We just don't have any real credible news sources Out there that are covering things But that's something that happened The dynamics of our schools They're turned over on our ear And we've got teachers and administrators And school boards struggling Just to keep order And make sure our kids are In a positive learning environment In our schools There's a lot of things that are going on That are just not good And we need to be honest about them It's amazing to me How bad things could get in 4 or 5 years I mean, where in the world Did the homeless problem come from? How in this world Did they run us dead out of money In 4 or 5 years? I've been shocked by it all We're going to have to be honest And admit what's going on If we're going to fix those problems Because we have them And they need to be fixed So we went through 1 and 2 1, it just makes perfect sense to me You put God first in your life Make sure you have a good positive relationship with God Number 2 You identify the problems that you have For us personally Whatever they are Whether it's our marriage Whether it's finances Or kids Or our job Or whatever it is Let's identify what problems we have So we can fix them With the city Man, we've got a whole list of problems That are going on And you know The thing that bothers me most is There's a constant Go Radford Everything's great We're just wonderful And hey Hey, I'm all for positive news on Radford And I know it's probably Would be fair if some of you said You know Keith, you're always Pointing out the negative things That are going on in the city And it seems like you should talk about Some positive things And I think that's probably That's probably a fair criticism Although I will say this I don't really need to talk about The positive things Because they're so far Plastered all over Facebook Every good thing that could Possibly have happened Has already showed up on Facebook On one of our Council People's pages You know I'm going to get in trouble saying this And it can be taken the wrong way But Just my personal opinion I'm not electing someone To be a personal billboard For every new restaurant Or every sprinkle that shows up On a cupcake Or every new blouse That shows up at a particular Storefront I mean I think those things are great I think people on our council Should promote businesses And there's nothing wrong with that There's a place for that It's great that You know Radford High School's football team Won the state championship I have fought, bled And lived it all out On that football field for Radford And I love the Bobcats I'm so excited About that state championship And we should talk about it And everything else But we didn't elect our guys To be, you know Booster club presidents Or you know Those things we do need to talk about And I'm glad that they do Put some of that out there But I would like to be hearing about Some of these issues That I'm talking about I don't think people should learn On the One More Round podcast That we have a homeless issue in the city I think they should learn it From our elected officials As they're telling us What they're going to do To fix the problems You know I had Four different people Send me pictures From this weekend Of people sleeping on benches Sleeping under bridges Doing things like that Down at Wildwood Park Okay We got a real problem down there And hey I think it's awesome That so and so sweet treats Has a new cake out And that's great And I think you should promote it But let's promote Some of the major issues in the city As we do that as well Let's make it important That we solve some of these problems And I've just listed a few of them And I think we need to get in there So in order to do that We went through one and two We talked about the You know Identifying the issues That we got in front of us But how about a plan? You know I always believed That you need When you have a problem And you want to fix it You need to develop a plan But I think it's just as important An important part of developing that plan Is to develop your own plan Now I told you before I'm not a self-help guru You know I do believe in getting advice from people I do I get advice from a lot of people Let me give you Let me give you some advice On getting some advice The best thing I can tell you To start with is Is who not to get advice from You know If you're having trouble With your finances Would you go to someone That had their house foreclosed on And can't balance their checkbook And get financial advice from them? No No you wouldn't You go to someone Who's successful with their money Who's successful with their finances Those are the kind of people You seek out If someone can't You know If someone You know is running around On their wife And their marriage is in shambles And their you know I don't think you should talk to them If you have a marital issue right? You probably need to go Sit down with your pastor Or your pastor's wife Or someone that Can give you good Solid biblical advice On things like that Seek out people That are successful In the area that you want To be successful in People that have accomplishments That have shown the ability To overcome problems And to generate good things Go to those kind of people To get advice from So it's good to get advice But first start with yourself First start with analyzing the problem With your own common sense And your own experience And try to develop a plan That fits you Start at the beginning I mean if you're having Trouble with finances If you've got a lot of debts Well you know You may want to start As the first part of my plan is I'm not going to go out to eat Until I pay off This one first small debt here This credit card Or whatever it is I'm not going to go out to eat If it takes me six months If it takes me a year I'm not going to go out to eat One time Until this debt's paid for That's a good start to a plan You know if you're having Problems with your children Maybe you're worried About your parents Your children Or your grandparents You're worried about Your grandchildren Well start here Are you going to church? Do you go to a good Bible believing church? Is that child in Sunday school? Or Juana? Or a good youth group? What about yourself? Maybe step one of your plan Should be On the very first Sunday in January I'm going to be in a good Solid Bible believing church And I'm going to be sitting At my rear end in that pew With my family And that's not And dads don't make Don't make your wives figure it out You're supposed to be leaders In the home too So I think that would be A good start Or a good plan for you For the first Sunday If you're having trouble With your marriage Having trouble with kids Or whatever it is That's a good start But you sit down And you identify The problems that you have And you try to work out A couple small plans And I don't know What your situation is Do you have an addiction That's working on you? Are you overindulging like me? Do you eat too much? Whatever it is You can develop a plan To curtail what you're doing If you're willing to sit down And just use some common sense Before you even go to anyone else And I'm not saying never To seek advice From good, reliable people But first Sit down and be honest with yourself About the problem you have And develop a plan to get rid of it It may be that You know what? I'm going to eat one plate of food For five days a week No matter what I do The first five Monday through Friday I'm going to eat one plate I'm not getting any second helpings Or anything That's my problem Those second helpings Are what kill me So that might be part of your plan But I'm smart enough To figure that out What my problem is And you are too And I encourage you To realize what your problems are And to set some realistic goals In order to correct those problems Now for the city What about them? They've got a lot of problems Don't they? I listed a whole lot of stuff Here's where I would start This is number one Right off the bat If I was setting a plan For the city of Radford I would restore Radford City's representative government I would restore it They don't have a representative government Right now They've got one guy running everything I talked about that In Red Over Black 3 You can go back and check that out Stop ceding Stop ceding all your authority To one council member And set some strong rules And parameters That everyone has to abide by That follow city and state code And rein in this one person rule deal That they've got going there And make sure that city staff Are on board And they're complying With all those things Which means if Some city council member Calls and makes a request For a city employee To do something That has not went through The city manager They politely say No sir No ma'am I'm sorry You'll have to contact David Ridpath And let him come to me And talk to that I'm going to follow the rules That the state And our city code Has set out And that's the way It's going to be So that's where I'd start No the rest of them Are going to work If we continue to do The same thing That we've been doing We don't identify the problem And then we just keep on Doing the same thing Over and over That's Somewhere That's in the definition Of insanity, right? I think we need Number two I think we need To make it clear To the mayor And to Radford University That they are not In charge Of Radford City The citizens are And the citizens Are in charge Through their Elected five council Member body That's how it's Supposed to work You know There's a whole Other thing That has nothing To do with the RU Hotel But they've talked About the RU Hub I'm really leery Of that whole thing I really think That whole process Needs to stop Until we can figure Out exactly What benefit Or what detriment It may have On Radford City Where all of our Council understands Exactly what's Going on And our citizens Understand what's Going on So we can all Through our council Members Make some objective Decisions About what's right And truthfully As long as RU's Doing this co-gen Facility Until we realize The impact That it's going To have On us as a city I mean we're looking At a 1.3 million dollar Loss Per year In revenue That's a big deal You do realize That That's equal to Four or five You know Middle sized Manufacturing plants You know That we're losing A year In taxes Just from this Loss in electricity I mean it's a It's a pretty big Devastating thing So it may be Until we can Resolve that And figure out Some amicable Solution to that We need to stop This wheeling and Dealing with Radford University All together I personally I personally have Lost my faith And trust in them As I have As I have our mayor Because I don't believe It bothers me I didn't really Believe that in the past I had a lot of people Tell me that I just Really didn't believe it Until I actually saw it In black and white And I held it in my fingers And I read it myself And once you've seen it And once you know You know And I think We all know now That something nefarious Is going on there Let me add this too As my next point Just so you think I never give a compliment I think we've been doing A really good job In the city As far as New single family Homes starts New construction And I've talked about that In another episode A little bit The present council And even the council before They don't have a lot To do with that Other than they're Staying out of the way So I encourage them To continue to stay Out of the way And allow these These housing starts These single family Housing starts To continue And to make sure That the process Is as easy on them As can be Get the red tape Out of the way Because you know Every time we build A new home You know In the range That they seem To have When you look At real estate taxes And personal property taxes That are going to follow With vehicles And things they have And some other Residual things Every house is worth Close to You know Like four thousand dollars A year And that's every new house Well every existing house too But about four thousand dollars A year In revenue For the city And we desperately Need the money So I think The housing starts Need to continue I think we need to Work hard to eliminate You know Wasteful spending It's hard to do sometimes But we need to make sure That you know City staff And city council You know We're not catering out A bunch of dinners We're not doing You know Every time St. Patrick's Day Rolls around We bring it in food We need to make sure We're curtailing A lot of the wasteful spending That I'm hearing Is going on I don't You know A lot of times You hear things That's not always true But hey Things like that Let's cut out Let's not waste a dime Let's really get down To business I think our present City council They had mentioned That they would be Finding out Where all the COVID money was spent I haven't seen or heard Anything about that Where did all the money go I think that's important To know But in the meantime I think we need to be Cutting spending We need to make sure That our employees Are continuing to be paid And that the citizens Are receiving the Goods and services That they That they're paying Their taxes for We need to make sure That we're not Figuring out ways To make more money For citizens That are already Paying high taxes But we need to make sure That the money That we have The city's money That they have Is used wisely And you know It's taken care of So we're not Wasting one nickel Of the citizens Hard earned money I think we need to begin A regular series of meetings With our representatives In Richmond We don't have those I think we should be having Work sessions And meetings With our Congressmember Jason Ballard And with our State Senate Representative Hackworth To find out What they can do To help us In the city Because we need to Grow industry We need to grow business We need to grow Our tax base In the city If we're going to survive We're literally Dancing on the head Of a pen right now And any extra thing That we can do Helps So I went through One, two, and three We've talked about Putting God first We've talked about Identifying our problems And being honest about them We've talked about Forming a personal plan And a couple key points For the city To form a plan with We've talked about that too Number four I think Sometimes a bold move Is in order Sometimes to shake things up In our own life We need to change some things And sometimes It's more than just Formulating a plan And working through it For a year Sometimes we need to Change something big And I don't know What that big thing Is for you I want to be real careful About that Because that don't mean Just go out And do something dumb Just because It really doesn't It's something you should Carefully and prayerfully Consider But sometimes You need to make a bold move Maybe it's a new job Or a new career path You know Sometimes that can really Shake things up And sometimes It may change your whole Outlook on how things are A new job Or a new career You might want to Consider that Maybe you need to be Going to a different church Maybe you've Kind of Things have went Dead for you Where you're at And I want you To be careful About that But sometimes You wind up In a new church With the same old problems And sometimes The same old problem Is you But sometimes Though You may need to Change churches If God's leading you In another place Again That's something You should Carefully and prayerfully Consider You know Maybe it's a solution Maybe that kid That you're having A problem with Maybe there's a Home school Or a private school Solution for him I don't know But sometimes It takes a bold move Sometimes you need To make a big change So think about that That's something You may want to Put on your list For 2024 Now the city I definitely think We could use Some bold moves And I will suggest one I think The new Foundry property That they have purchased I think Quickly and immediately They should put that land Under the EDA I think you should get it Out from under The city's control Out from under The pervasive influence That's undoubtedly Going to come From Radford University I think you need to Get it under The EDA's control Who actually Are the ones Who push That process Along anyway Let me tell you Just a little secret It's definitely A secret Because no one Else is talking About it That was something The purchase Of the foundry Property Was something That I was very big On when I was on council Because I really Believed And I still do That if the city Is going to survive That the growth Is going to have To happen in West End On that vacant property We're going to have To bring in A larger and stronger Industrial base In order for Radford City To survive Radford was built On that foundry That was there And when it closed Before I come into office It had a devastating Effect on the city Excuse me It opened For a little while Just kind of For a temporary job It closed again And it's just It's just been A drain on the city Overall We lost a Tremendous amount Of revenue Because of that We need that park Or that section Of town Rebuilt and redone Quickly Now for All the last Four or five years It just sat idle There were opportunities To do things But in spite of What's been put out there There was no interest From the mayor Or anybody else On council at the time Of pushing that forward As they sat And were idle The EDA Went to work on it And the EDA Was able to Talk to the people That owned the property And start to negotiate it To the point that The EDA Was probably Able to Get the property Themselves And so it could be Developed to help the city And then when I believe The mayor heard about that And realized it was about To slip out of his hands He jumped in there As the champion Of the property And that's really Not how it happened In spite of the Self-prepared And self-requested Media interviews And things like that It was the EDA That got that moving And it's the EDA That can get that done for us They have the Skill set They have the Legal parameters They have the Legal parameters And the ability To recruit the businesses And to get that New industrial park going So I think the bold move That needs to happen is We need to get that property Under the EDA So they can get it Developed quickly We need a good Solid At least medium size If not large Manufacturing type plan You know Something along the lines Of what we have in Pulaski Of the Of the Hardy plant You know For the Hardy board Things like that We need something like that $150,000 We need something Like that $150,000 Something like that $150,000 Or more jobs You know Generate Bring in $300,000 or $400,000 Potential of Tax revenue Across You know Real estate taxes And across Machinery tools And business Personal property And the other Residuals And you know The employees Coming in and out Shopping at our local You know Getting gas Doing things like that We need a big win Like that My suggestion Of the bold move Is to Let the EPA Let them go To work on that And get that done They're the ones That got it this far To begin with No one else And I think They need to be given That property So they can Get that work done And then we can We can As citizens Not have to worry About the pervasive Influence That's going on With the partnership Between our mayor And Radford University And bringing in Their influence And it's hard to tell What it would wind up being But it surely So take control Of that property Get it with the EDA And let them Get that developed In the way That's reasonable That will help the citizens Now the final thing Number five To me Can be the hardest Of every one That I've listed Because I've just called it Keep your head down And stay the course You know How many of us Have a new year's resolution To lose some weight At the beginning of the year Start going to the gym You know You're going to Have to lose Some weight If you don't Start going to the gym You know If you go to the gym After the first year That place is packed For the first couple weeks But if you keep going It'll get thinner And it'll get thinner And thinner There'll be people You'll see the first two weeks Maybe keep marching There'll be people You'll see the first two weeks That you won't see anymore That's because It's hard To stay the course You know When you've When you've realized What your problems are And you've written them down And you And you know what they are And then you develop A plan to fix them And you've went after it Maybe you've made a bold move or two But you've You've went after The problem You're trying to fix it One of the hardest things to do Is to be Consistent To have a plan And to keep working the plan That is hard It takes determination It takes self-will You know It takes effort You know It takes willpower It takes all of those things But I encourage you Once you start it Give it the year Work on it for the year And if And if If you get knocked off the trail You're going to You're going to You're going to You're going to You're going to You're going to You're going
