I hope you enjoyed Episode 1 of the Progress Project Private Members Podcast and today I'm here with Episode number 2. I'm going to be chatting through my top tips to start the day feeling great. Now, I'm someone that has played about with numerous different morning routines. You'll see the morning routine document on the Members Lab as well, which I think I might tweak slightly off the back of this. And yeah, I've tried everything from journaling, from meditation, to ice baths, to absolutely everything. And what I think can really, what people can get caught up on is just over-complicating things. Trying to fit in 50 different habits in the morning before they do anything. You just get overwhelmed by it. It's something you can't stick to. And yeah, it just doesn't work long term. But I'm a great believer that there should be a few things in the morning that you stick by more often than not. And you try and incorporate this into your routine, which will really leave you feeling great starting the day in the best possible manner. So I'm going to go through five points, which I think if you stick to, you're going to be feeling great. And obviously, you're maybe not going to be able to do this every single day of your life. But if you do this more often than not, you're really going to give yourself the best chance of having an amazing day. And this is not going to take a long time. You don't need to blank out two hours before you start your day. Honestly, within sort of 15, 20 minutes, this will be done and you'll be feeling excellent. So first things first, is do not snooze your alarm. If you avoid snoozing the alarm, that's going to allow you to wake up feeling better. As soon as you snooze your alarm, within that 8, 9, 10 minutes, however long it is until it rings again, you can then slip back into a deeper sleep cycle. And when it goes again, you're likely to press snooze, snooze, snooze before you know it. 40 minutes has gone, you're waking up, you're feeling groggy, and it's just not a good way to start the day. If you can keep your phone away from your bedside so you can't reach it when the alarm goes, when you jump up out of bed, you're going to put the alarm off, you're much less likely to press snooze, and you're ready to go. So try your best to avoid pressing snooze. If you do get into a regular sleep routine, same bedtime, same wake up time, you're never going to want to click snooze anyway because your body clock's going to naturally wake up and you'll be feeling a lot better. But if you're not in that regular routine, try your very best not to hit snooze. Then, don't open anything on your phone straight away. What I would say is, put your alarm off, go downstairs, leave your phone on the table, and the first thing that I would do, this may not be too feasible during the winter, but during the lighter nights, lighter mornings, sorry, get outside straight away. As soon as possible, if you can just get outside, into the daylight, sit in your garden for one, two minutes, just have a wee wander around the garden, a few deep breaths, a few thoughts, just be present, you'll honestly feel amazing. This is the number one thing that I would recommend, especially when it's light mornings. Get outside, wakes you up better than anything else I've ever tried. Just get outside, a few deep breaths, just be present, just a minute or two, and then you're going to be absolutely feeling amazing. Then, what I would do is get a glass of water, a big glass of water before anything else, don't grab a coffee, nothing else, don't just start eating food. A big glass of water, if you can, even add a wee bit of some Himalayan salt in there to replace some electrolytes from throughout the night, and you're going to be feeling excellent. So, a big glass of water, first things first. So, again, this is only going to be about five minutes since you've woken up, but we've already taken some great steps to feeling great. I would then, for me personally, do a ten minute full body stretch. I feel it's a good way to wake up, just stretch the body after a night's rest, and just really still being mindful, just being with your thoughts, thinking about the day ahead, not being overwhelmed by messages on our phone yet or anything like that. So, a good full body stretch. If you're that way inclined as well, you can jump into an ice bath, which I sometimes do. I haven't made that a regular routine in terms of every single day, but it's something that I'm looking to probably do that as a permanent feature. Just two minutes, every single day, straight into that ice bath. But for me, it's not really worked out that way in the sense that sometimes Rosie or Evie, my two wee girls, sometimes they've woken up and I can't really just be sitting outside an ice bath when they're awake, so it hasn't really worked out. But for the mommas that have jumped in, I can really promote it and I'm a big advocate of it in terms of the benefits that you do feel. It certainly wakes you up. But if you're not in an ice bath, ten minute full body stretch would be perfect. And also, if you've got a wee bit of free time, another five, ten minutes. If you've got, if it's light outside, get a five, ten minute walk. Again, we're getting out in the daylight, a bit of walk, a bit of fresh air, a bit of physical activity. Nothing strenuous, just five, ten minutes, and then you come back and then you can start your day. If you implement these things, then trust me, you're going to feel absolutely fantastic throughout that day. Rather than just rolling out of bed, we've clicked the alarm, snooze off about five times, and then we're just rushing, we're pretty much brushing our teeth, we're leaving the house with no food, we're jumping into the office or wherever we're going, we're going straight into work, we've got our heads all fuzzy, we've looked at our phone, we're answering messages, we've just woke up in a reactive state, and we're not feeling good. If we do these things that I've mentioned, which, if you include the walk, a five, ten minute walk, it's going to take you 15, 20 minutes in total. It's nothing major, there's nothing difficult about it, it's just setting yourself up for the day in a real good, proactive way, and you're going to feel great. So, having tried almost every single thing you've heard of with regards to morning routines, these five things, for me, are without doubt the best, and I will be utilising these for the foreseeable, for the rest of my life, probably.
