One is someone who dedicates themselves to attaining enlightenment, in the service of others, as well. In other words you dedicate yourself to your freedom, as well as, freeing others. Sometimes it has to do with, sort of, the helpers of the Buddha. Anyone who's dedicated to freedom, to liberating yourself, and others, can be called a bodhisattva. That's one way of looking at it.
