Fencing has three disciplines: FOIL, EPE, and SABER. FOIL is stabbing with specific rules. EPE is slow and full body stabbing. SABER is fast and upper body stabbing. Swords have blunt buttons. Sleeve and helmet are required. Warm-ups are full body. Gear can get hot but facilities are well-ventilated. There are many clubs in the area. Eli and Henry do the podcast together due to sound system issues. They sign off. Okay. This is Eli and Henry's podcast about fencing and Henry would like to ask some questions. I am the expert here. I know everything about fencing. Henry, ask away. So, what are the differences between the disciplines in fencing? So, I'm glad you asked. Fencing has three different disciplines. FOIL, EPE, and SABER. FOIL is just stabbing and the target area is just the torso in the back and it has specific rules which I won't get into because we only have a couple minutes. Then there's EPE which is the slowest and it's full body target also stabbing and then there's SABER which is the fastest and the most barbaric which is upper body, all upper body and yeah, it's the fastest. Are the swords pointy? No. They have buttons on the, in FOIL and EPE which is specifically stabbing. They only have buttons on the end which are blunt and they go to the machine and register and in SABER it's a little bit different but no, the swords are not pointy. Why do some people wear no sleeves? That's not true. People do wear sleeves in fencing. If you're not wearing sleeves in fencing then you're fencing illegally. Oh, I think I was lied to. Yeah, I think you were lied to. Why do some people not wear helmets? That's again also not true. You don't want to lose an eye fencing. If you're not wearing a mask while fencing you're definitely doing something illegal especially in tournaments. I was lied to by spy kids. Oh, okay, that's interesting. What do the warm ups look like? The warm ups are, it's basically with any other sport. You start with running, you go to stretching and it's different. It varies from club to club and class to class but I would say it's mostly, it's full body. Fencing is pretty full body so you just, hamstrings, arms, neck, yeah, it's a lot. Is the gear hot? Yes, it is very hot. When you're wearing it for hours on end it can get pretty hot although I will say almost all fencing facilities are extremely well ventilated. There's almost no, you don't really feel it especially when there's adrenaline coursing through you. Maybe in the first couple minutes you have it on but then you start fencing and it turns out completely fine especially if you remember to drink water. You don't feel it. What clubs are in our area? There's a lot of different clubs in our area. I can rattle some off. There's Seattle My Own Club, Rain City Fencing Center which is a very competitive fencing club. There's Metro Tacoma. There's Washington Fencing Academy. There's Emerald City Fencing which just got shut down a couple years ago. Kaizen Academy, there's a bunch. Thank you guys so much for listening. Thank you for listening to the podcast because Eli's sound system is broken. That's why we're doing it together. And Eli and Henry out.
