Welcome to Christchurch's Daily Devotion for May 6, 2024. Today we will be reading from Matthew 28, verses 1-10. After the Sabbath at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and going to the tomb rolled back the stone and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the woman, Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him. Now I have told you. So the women hurried from the tomb. Afraid yet filled with joy and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. Greetings, he said. They came to him, collapsed at his feet and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee. There they will see me. We love to read the Christmas story. With shepherds and magi of a virgin birth and an obedient Joseph, the teachings of Christ jump off the pages of the Gospels to us as we imagine what it would have been like to have been with him as one of his disciples during his life on earth. Sometimes the miracles confound us, but they always point as signs toward the Father, to whom the Son was always bringing glory. But none of the details of the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth from his birth to his death would likely be known to us if it were not for the story of his resurrection. The statement in this passage that he is risen serves as a foundation for our faith. It is because of Christ's resurrection from the dead that we even know about him. It is because of his resurrection that we have the hope of eternal life. He promised the apostles that he would rise again, but that sounded preposterous until it happened. It is because of Christ's resurrection that we can have complete hope and faith in him as our Lord and Savior. We recently celebrated this at Easter, and we can celebrate it every day. Your personal worship option today is to give thanks today that Christ has come to save the world and that he rose from the tomb. Reflect on that awesome fact that because of his resurrection, we too have the hope and promise of eternal life in God's presence. Hallelujah. Amen.
