Kennewick Man was not initially protected under NAPRA because there was no cultural or genetic link to a tribe. However, recent genetic testing revealed his connection to tribes in Washington. As a result, he will be repatriated and reburied according to tribal customs. The speaker is unhappy with the behavior of their colleagues in this situation and mentions bones going missing and legal battles between archaeologists and the United States. For the Kennewick Man to fall under the protection of NAPRA, it required him to be linked to a tribe, either culturally or genetically. And for many years, there was no link. He was in a similar situation that the Wendover bodies were, where he sat pretty much unstudied until about 2016, when finally some genetic testing revealed he is linked to a couple of tribes in Washington. And through that connection, he is going to be repatriated and reburied, according to tribal customs. I will admit, I am not proud of the way my colleagues acted in this situation. We hear stories of bones going missing and bitter legal battles between archaeologists suing the United States in order to gain access to these bones. Thank you.
