Estrategia Social is a cultural program in Durazno, Uruguay, focused on helping people and solving community problems. The program includes music and discussions on various topics. In this episode, they discuss the challenges faced by blind people and the importance of empathy and inclusivity. They also highlight the need for accessible infrastructure in cities. The program aims to promote equality and understanding among all individuals, regardless of their abilities. This is Estrategia Social and we are starting this new edition here on 89.3 FM. My name is José Luis Colmán and we are going to travel in this, in some way, in time, with songs, with anecdotes, with, in short, what this program has. It is called Estrategia Social and it is here in Durazno, Uruguay, the center of the country, in some way, working on this new topic, which is Estrategia Social, which is a cultural topic dedicated to and for people. We already introduced our partner, Dario Ismael, Dario Fumero, and, well, he is our social manager, and in some way he wants to help and to people, as he also talks to them, to solve problems that there are in our city, such as the issue of the palm tree that was about to fall the other day, there, near the neighborhood. Well, he talked to those of us who had to talk, with the lady there, the priest, and things like that. It is a cultural program made for and for people. Another comment, we are going to have music too, because in this program, in some way, there is also a little music. It is a cultural topic, for example, we have tied folklore, we have tied rock, Uruguayan bands, national bands that have transcended in time, also local music, local rock bands, as we had taken out last week. Anyway, we are already giving our glass to our colleague, Ismael Dario Fumero. How are you? Good morning, José Luis. Good morning, audience. Starting like this, then, the program number 7, with the same pleasure of presenting to people cultural topics and, well, as always, presenting music and the central theme, which gives the program its name, the podcasts, with the themes always recurring and updated. And this time we will do it with a very sensitive theme that is aimed at the blind. And, well, we leave the theme presented there, as you said, also the musical themes, referring to our national and local artists of all genres. The next podcast focuses on solidarity towards the different capacities of men. It brings as an example a physical disability, a single one, the lack of vision, but it represents in some way each and every one of them. Humans love to compete. We love to compare ourselves with others in any way, using all possible means. We invent games to measure physical skills and mental games to overcome an opponent, because it also seduces us the challenge of achieving marks and surpassing not only our level, but the level of a rival in order to be at the top. However, we neglect that such capacities are not always marks, they are not always measures of superiority, but only forms of life. There are people in this world with different capacities as the only option to develop and establish themselves in society. A blind man knows this because he does not choose his condition, nor does he look for opponents, but rather conditions his capacity to integrate with others. This episode invites us to enter a little bit into this world of mystery and participate in the contact of different capacities from another point of view, of which he suffers blindness or low vision. Go ahead. Blindness With the lucidity of the heart. A person who is not blind, what we used to call blind, does not see your appearance, but does see your essence. Remember that. The next time you are with a person who does not see or has low vision, remember that they know before how your mood is that day. For example, they will know before if you are angry, happy, happy, in a bad mood. They will have perceived it by your breathing, your smell, your movements, the same if you are in a hurry, worried, with something in your hands. By your silences or your breaks when speaking, if you are upset, distracted, they will know without even commenting. The accentuation of your words and the emphasis on some more than on others represents for a blind man and his vision much more than any explanation. When you are with a blind person, act simple, natural. Do not try to show anything else. Simply do what you have to do. Whether by your character or circumstance, your thought or feeling is translucent, and when you exteriorize it, because it surely happens, somehow it is easy to interpret it, it is good that you understand it. Because by not seeing the color, the shape or the appearance, or the nuances, the intensity of everything that surrounds them, they are not familiar with it, because they recognize other characteristics that we underestimate unconsciously and we do not even notice. Depending on the time that a person suffers from the lack of vision, whether recent or of birth, it is the way how he relates to the world that surrounds him, the same if it is temporal or the product of an accident. And that depends on the ability to link with other people and with things in general. Remember, he is in tune with all your perceptions, because he is the only means of contact, therefore to deceive or to hide is and will be a failed act. Although not being receptive to them, having them in inferior conditions or being ignored is reckless, a lack of consideration, totally reprehensible, it is also worth saying that this comes out of ignorance. It is not strange that historically it is still not evident that he has been deprived of social life. At one time it was little that was done to include them in the lives of others. It is still quite difficult for us to abandon that hard and insensitive attitude of not being interested in them and of adding them within our personal or social contacts. However, it would not cost us anything to consider them as they are, flesh and blood, with soul and heart, and with the virtues and defects of anyone. Nothing costs a simple act of natural empathy. How important this way of promoting equality among all, which in the past were privileges that meant social barriers for a few, barely with physical differences. How pleasant is normal and ordinary coexistence, above the ways we each have. Knowing how to address these essential principles, a non-vivid person is understood, will feel that way, and we will be able to practice harmonious coexistence, not only by going to the familiar environment of trust, but as with the whole community, in social spaces and in open meetings. We may happen to meet one day in the square, in a shop, and it may be a nice moment for those who feel integrated and appreciated. Always remember, in front of you, you have a human being with a different capacity, a different physical capacity, and that of not being able to see with the eyes, as most do, that is another way of living and understanding the world. This is how a proper behavior is shared and built on the conditions given. That is why we say that there is a limitation, and nothing more than that. And one more thing, on the street, people need company, especially because of the obstacles that the city presents, which are few to be avoided and many are left to proliferate. Cities are not distributed so that the non-vivid person can move freely and safely, unlike the countryside or small towns. Cities that are highly urbanized, like the capitals of Urasno, which look like a plot and are not very organized, or others like Villa del Carmen, an example of the many and varied things that are in our country, like the rocks in Canelones, Montevideo itself, or any other in all the departments, for having physical elements scattered or poorly located in places of public access, are a problem for the non-vivid people. It is there where we, the vivids, can and must accompany them in their transit, precisely because of their vision problems, in an area that is not of their knowledge. Being able to interact without difficulty, without danger, is a great challenge. A small unevenness on the floor, a small step, a raised tile, a crack in the pavement, things like these are obstacles. An open portion outside the building line leads to an unwanted accident, you will hit your head. A bench, columns in the middle of the sidewalk, posters, all kinds of hangings, like low-heeled stools, unmarked reforms and works, debris and proliferation of plants, are inconveniences for a safe transit. In addition, another important thing, the agglomeration of people and the excesses of noise are disorienting. In urban turmoil, this can be even dangerous. Crossing the streets without traffic lights or without painted zebras also represents challenges. Not even taking care when driving requires, even for the non-vivid, more effort. They require more time, more concentration, and a very developed methodology. In these circumstances of transit, they should be assisted by someone, at least driven in solidarity, and that corresponds to each of us. We all need guidance and protection towards the non-vivid, even more in their mobilization, outside the intimate surroundings of the home or work, if they have it. With the indication, let's go, now yes, now no, a step to the right, no, to the left. Brief references at the moment to indicate a concrete action. That is redundant in your own interest. Holding the arm is authorized and deserves. Offering it is ours so that it will hold. Everything counts and will be useful to them. When you meet someone in this situation, it is worth thinking in this way, even without knowing how to act. Being solidary, respectful, conscious and connected with others, we will discover the best disposition and we will see with the lucidity of the heart what corresponds to be done on the occasion. That is why we say, the lucidity of the heart opens roads. Well, and so the music passed, nothing more and nothing less than high-pitched, Do not look at me. This group, formed by Néstor Moreno and Alejandra Silveira, born in the department of 33 in Santa Clara de Olimar, where the Olimar River is born, and located on the Cuyilla Grande. From a very young age, their musical aptitudes are manifested, and it is as if after incursioning both as soloists, they decide to form, in 2005, the duo Copla-Alta, here in Estrategia Social. Well, we are with Ismael Fumero, commenting on the way of improvisation, this which is for all people who somehow lose their vision, and some, as I said, are born blind, not evident, and some, with the passage of time, block. It is really a very delicate issue, because I know cases here in the United States, in which somehow they struggle to live day by day, like any person, disabled, right? But it is a very delicate issue, a very respected issue, a very delicate issue to deal with, but today it emerged in Estrategia Social, and so we are going to take it this way. Go ahead, Campañero Ismael. The issue of physical disability, not only blind, not only with the lack of vision, but with the lack of mobility, people with motor disabilities. I think we all should have a special sensitivity and a disposition, as we said before in the presentation, because it is a way of life, it is a different capacity, and it is not at all a lower human being, it is a common and ordinary person, who has another way of seeing and integrating into society. But that is precisely what we need to ensure, so that culturally, and so that the care that is needed, the support and the sensitivity, come out of our hearts. Yes, I think the sensitivity is to help them in some way, to make them feel really supported by the neighbor, and always when there is a case like this, to take part in the matter, and to help them because every day is a school, you get up, as we said in another case, you get up in the morning and go to sleep at night, and the next day you go to sleep again, and you never know what you are going to face in life. Sometimes there are people who discriminate, we know that. Yes, and any circumstance can put us in that position of invalidity or incapacity, because, as the audio says, they are people who may have been born with blindness or the result of an accident, and overnight they may have this incapacity to see. Or it can be temporary as well. Many people with cataracts have low vision, and it is very common, it is much more than you think, the number of people who suffer from it. So, being supportive in the way of behaving with these people, and always being aware that they need something more than us, which is integration. With the spaces, having a city conditioned so that the streets and sidewalks are accessible, so that access to public places is also in the best and most appropriate way. I think it is a pending issue, as long as we will never reach the ideal. What do you think, José Luis? Well, I have been listening to what you said about the sidewalks. It is really a separate case, the sidewalks and all that kind of thing. Yes, it is true that the city's sidewalks are not very good in certain parts, in some streets, in the city center, they are not all... that is up to the local government. We are not talking about politics, so we are not going to get into that topic. But not only for the non-evident, today we are talking about the non-evident. For example, my mother had a health problem and was a little sick, but when I go out with her, I tell her, for example, be careful, my mother, with the sidewalks, they are dangerous. It is for everyone. They are dangerous, try to walk on the sidewalks and all that kind of thing. And for them, I think it is a great issue, because the fact of being born or the issue of being left without a vision is something very delicate, as I was saying before. Because one thing is to be born, more or less, you are born and you are awakened, perhaps, by other instincts that are not like the ones we have. Yes, they have the perception, they sharpen the other senses, the smell, the hearing, the touch, the taste. All their senses are enhanced, and I know that this is a form of language that has to connect with others. What you say about being born blind is, in a way, a incentive to develop with all the potential possible, which does not happen to those who are temporarily or those who are unexpectedly blind, having already been evident, right? I think that is your reflection. Yes, I see it from that point of view. I know several people here in the city, I am not a friend or an acquaintance of them. In a way, the other day it happened to me that, without knowing the subject we are going to talk about today, I imagined how people help others, how we can help those people. I don't know, nobody knows what is going to happen to them. As I said before, we have to help those people, give them a hand. Sir, do you need something? Things like that. Yes, there are people who are prepared, because they have studied, but we, ordinary people, have to be willing to help, right? We have to have a little bit of sensitivity, I think. We live in a hurry and a little bit like egocentrists, and we don't see a little bit more beyond. And if we see someone with a cane, especially if it is a white cane, we should know from an early age that it is a person who is moving without knowing what is in front of him, because he doesn't see. Maybe he is walking with him, crossing the street, walking anywhere, because there may be a sign of those indicators that the shops have, as the audio said, a bank, and dangerous places, traffic, crossing the street, where there is no traffic light. All of this is said, but I say, we have to reiterate it and be aware of it, to always be alert, because I have friends who are blind, and I have someone who also has low vision, and you don't know how pleasant it is for them to feel accompanied in this way. Yes, really, they take you with love and recognize you by your voice. Exactly, yes, of course. By saying, by naming them or greeting them, they already know your voice. I know because I have dealt with some, and with the tone of my voice they tell me, ah José Luis, and I tell them, look, over here, over there, and I help them. I have even helped them to cross the sidewalk, and I tell them, guide them, for example, no, no, it's not there, it's further, come this way, walk that way, thank you very much, always very respectful. Really, they are very intelligent people. But they are also thanking you for something that they really need. And they are intelligent, of course, normal people who have that disability, that difference to see the world. But they really understand, understand, and connect, as long as we enable it. A while ago I had the opportunity to work in the Departmental Commission on Disabilities, and I really understood how far behind we are as a society in Uruguay, and perhaps other countries as well. But I refer to us, here, to this medium, how far behind we are in terms of the benefits and the situations that people with low vision need. But we appeal and advocate that from this program, with a certain strategy, we can interact a little more with people. You know what I remember now? I never understood the note they made to the audience. Now it comes to mind. You know he had a cane, and you know what he did? Tell me. He cleaned the classroom of the students of the school. He was like a teacher. Look at you. I don't remember if he was a teacher, but I've been telling you this for years. Now it just came to my mind. And he was impressive, he did everything right. He cleaned the classroom, and the speaker asked him, put Daniel on the screen. Danielito, how do you do all these things? I do it for the love of the children, for the love that they love me, because they don't discriminate against me, they see things in me that others don't see. Because they habilitate him. Because they habilitate him. They give him space, they take him as a person, because unfortunately, the disabilities are hidden. They are hidden precisely because we don't enable them. And that person, without a doubt, with that permission to be able to work, he got to do that job too, and to know the place as if he were really seeing it. And another thing I'm telling you, they are very sentimental, and they give you a lot of love, but when they meet you, I met several, but I met another one who had been blind, after a while, being older. And you know what he told me? He was very intelligent, he was a person who had been a policeman, and he said things that I didn't hear, he told me about the hat, because you have to put the hat like this, and he explained to me in such a way that it was a color of so much, so that the student doesn't see so much, as a technique he gave me so that they were for him, and he told you because, of course, he was bad. He was bad, and then he gave the victory. At that moment, a life was passing by that allowed him to see another one that passed him by, the memory, nothing more. If we have to learn from all of them, if we have to learn, I thought it was important to bring this topic to today's program, because this is a moment that we will be talking about for 15, 20, 30 minutes, but imagine a life, a life that seems, or carrying that backpack, of being able to be included in society with those needs of vision. Imagine what it must be for a person. Yes, because it can happen to anyone, because I have been convinced that in life you don't know who you are going to need, sometimes the least indicated, who you are going to need, and how not to help those people, to cross the street, and why not to tell them where things are, for example. I don't know how they will do it, but some people touch the sun, or people there will help them, I don't know how the topic is, but you have to help those people, not to make them look fat, because it makes me ashamed, as we have already touched it here, it makes me ashamed, what people will say, it doesn't matter what people say, you have to do good, because you never know where you are going to be, you never know what you are going to do. We are contributing here with this program, that we have to be aware of this, not to be ashamed, but to know that there are people like this, and to help them, without any repair, to help them, as you say, Ivald Super, to tell them, to accompany them, and to help them to buy, to take them to the gondola, to the article they need, or if it is a vegetable stand, because they also, in the house, they handle themselves very well, as it is a family environment, they know every centimeter of the house, and they can handle themselves perfectly, but in a large space, open and on the street, things are not the same anymore. They change. So we have to help, we have to be empathic, solidary, be aware, connect with them, and we, from the social strategy, generate, manage, manage the link with the people who are not visible, and with low vision. You are in 89.3, EFM Diversity, this is the social strategy, already in its seventh program, and you hooked me with the program, we are in the improvisation of the theme, not visible in the city, and in what is in the whole country, because this is not only local, but in the whole world. In the whole society. I would like to know a little more what happens in other countries, because I say, one always has to draw examples of the best, and I, I encourage, encourage the authorities to repair this every day, every day, not only the local authorities, but the whole state, repair this, and be consistent, have a more dynamic city, with more accessibility, well, that is what is expected, and the ideal. I know that we do not have always happens, but there, I have been visiting cities, in other departments, and I can tell you that they are a little more advanced, because they have sidewalks with indicators, which is a special tile, which has as circles in relief, which indicates to the city where the pedestrian has to go, and where the curb has to go down, which in fact, they go down a slope, not a step, because the step is the worst enemy for a non-visitor. That is why I say, there are cities that are a little more advanced, including that. Yes, yes, yes, there are places and places, you always see that there are things that are wrong in our society, and sometimes we have a bad view. Yes, I am talking specifically about the city of Florida, which I know very well the city and I have recently been, and there are zebras, much more zebras than here in Durazno, and they have those tiles as Buenos Aires has them, for example, and Montevideo. Yes, yes, that is a political issue, we are not going to touch it now. Yes, well, but we, we have to give people elements, right? To be aware of those things, right? Perfectly, you are in 89.3 FM, and well, to round up, what did this topic leave you today? A great topic, a very delicate topic, that really, one has to talk, well, like all the topics that we have brought up here in the social strategy, with a lot of respect and a lot of affection, and with a lot of empathy, because we are really living difficult times, times of change, as I said in some social strategy programs around here, and well, and here, I, in my opinion, to leave it to you, it is always, I say, to try to help, to try to collaborate with society, with those who need us, and to give opportunities, as they gave me, as you gave them, as anyone can give them, sometimes there are things that are bad, sometimes there are things that are good, you have to be realistic, in a city you are not going to please everyone, because we see it with the program, we see it with life, we see it with a lot of things, but what I tell people is that today, let's help each other, and the world will be better. Nothing more to say, a really striking topic that leaves you with great sensitivity and great admiration for those people that, when they are young, maybe they don't see, or at birth, or with time, with the passage of time, they are not blocked, but people that need to be helped. Well, I subscribe to your words, so what you said seems to me to be true, and I'll stick with that. And now, the company Estudios Pica Piedas has arrived in Durazno. They are going to give us a tour of the city, of the city of Durazno, of the city of Durazno, of the city of Durazno, of the city of Durazno, of the city of Durazno, of the city of Durazno, of the
