Indigenous children in Canada make up only 7% of the child population but account for 53% of children in foster care, according to the 2021 Census. This over-representation is due to various factors, which will be explained. The first thing I would like to share with you is the data from the 2021 Census of Indigenous Children in Foster Care. The collected data states that Indigenous children ages 0-14 make up about 7% of the child population in Canada, while making up 53% of the children in foster care. This is clearly an over-representation, so why is there a huge imbalance? There are multiple reasons, of which I will discuss today.
