Generation Alpha refers to those born between 2010 and 2025. They are unique because they are constantly exposed to technology and social media. Many of them have parents who use social media and share their images online. Research shows that Generation Alpha has different cognitive patterns, such as shorter attention spans, due to their exposure to technology like Alexa and Siri, as well as platforms like TikTok and YouTube Short. Generation Alpha is the term researchers use to describe those born between 2010 to 2025. The term was coined by Australian social researcher Mark McCrindle in his 2008 report on the subject. This generation is entirely unique because of their overexposure to technology and social media. Most of Generation Alpha have Generation Y or Millennial parents who grew up using social media. This means that Generation Alpha children as young as newborns will have their images shared on various social media platforms. Whilst it is still difficult to describe Generation Alpha entirely demographically, as some are still being born, current research we have shows us that increased exposure to technology from electronic assistants such as Alexa and Siri to the introduction of AI platforms such as ChatGPT in educational institutions, Generation Alpha has largely different cognitive developmental patterns compared to other generations. One example of this is decreasing attention span. Popular apps such as TikTok or YouTube Short encourage the viewer to scroll after an average 6-10 second video, meaning that young minds are being shaped towards shorter attention spans.
