Cable TV has declined over the years due to the rise of streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus. These services offer convenience and a wide range of content, leading to decreased viewership of cable TV. This shift has also resulted in illegal streaming and a decline in sports subscriptions. Companies like HBO have adapted by releasing their content on streaming platforms. Cable TV now mainly features news, history, cooking, sports, and game shows. The pandemic led to a doubling of TV viewership, with streaming services being popular. Netflix's focus on promoting low-quality shows has influenced viewing habits, overshadowing quality programming. The convenience and accessibility of streaming make it unlikely for cable TV to make a comeback. This podcast is about how cable TV has died over the years, and the many different factors behind it. Back in the 90s to early 2000s, everyone was watching TV through cable, and it was on all things high ranking millions of viewers and displaying top quality TV, and this went on for years until websites and apps such as Netflix and Disney Plus decided to stop making their own service and allow paying customers to stream their content. As a result of this, they started to dominate in terms of viewer numbers and revenue. Netflix was the first big company to start this, and were followed by companies such as Skygo, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus. Due to many people paying for subscription, more and more people steered away from cable TV, and this meant the viewer numbers started going down because it was a lot more convenient to view from any device such as a mobile phone or laptop. It also allowed the consumer to watch whatever they want, whenever they want, with the only restriction being that they are restricted to the content being offered. The reason this is causing a big issue is that it is giving companies like Netflix more opportunities to reach their own exclusive content, which you cannot watch anywhere else, and if you want to watch it legally, you will have to pay for the subscription. This has also led to a lot of online illegal streaming on illegal websites, just for viewers to watch the programme. This has also helped in sports more recently, with people not being able to afford a Sky Sports or Beauty Sports subscription, so they have to use illegal websites just to watch their favourite sport, which is now being cut down on and is leading to many arrests over the UK. Companies such as HBO have realised that cable TV is attracting less and less viewers every year and have instead decided to release their product on streaming services such as scripted and reruns of old shows. Giving these companies more and more power to hate shows paying a subscription based on paywall has made consumers give in and support these businesses while they continue to add more and more shows for their viewers convenience. A lot of these companies' services can be violated if the show you want to watch isn't on the service you own, you will likely be tripped into banning a membership for a different company and then get sucked into the services they are offering. Over the last couple of years, there have been many reality TV programmes being released which has only gained more traction on cable TV, such as I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out Here and Love Island, but despite how popular these shows are, they only last a couple of weeks and when they finish, the viewer numbers drop back down. Nowadays the shows on cable TV that get the most daily traction are news programmes which get uploaded to all of social media afterwards and sports channels which are constantly being streamed illegally. In 2021, not a single channel likes a show, TV dramas such as Skylotic or Huge B.O. are in the top 10 most visited channels due to the fact all their content is being placed online. The only thing you would see, you would rarely see on cable TV nowadays, is channels such as news, history, cooking, sports and game shows which are constantly being rerun. In 2020, during the pandemic, the number of people watching TV doubled compared to the previous year, with nearly 6 in every 10 homes and villas having paid for streaming service during that time. The reason cable TV dying has become such a big issue for me personally, is that these websites such as Netflix are currently creating fractured viewing habits for customers and what I mean by that is that they are constantly promoting high budget, low quality shows which constantly get attention due to how much promotion they get and shoving it in people's faces. By getting millions of people to watch these shows, they are taking attention away from other quality shows which were a big reason as to why TV as a medium gets so much popularity and instead they put all their interest in the mediocre things they rarely choose. By doing this so often, they have influenced customer TV habits and make them constantly want more so Netflix can shift all their attention onto this and continue making programs they know will make them money no matter the quality of the program. Personally I think there is little to no chance of cable TV making a comeback as I think the convenience of streaming is just too good to ignore and mainstream services will continue to grow and expand in popularity and revenue. So the death of cable TV has been a long and continuous downfall which will only keep falling year by year because society is starting to realise there is no real use for it when you can find everything else in an easier place with better access and better quality online which offers everything you can find on cable TV on a definite occasion and possibly cheaper on most occasions.
