So this happens every year. Lots of publicity goes out to remind us all about this very difficult subject. If you want to find out more, there's plenty on the internet to help you. And on our Facebook page we'll have some sort of connection to a few thoughts there where it says supporting someone with suicidal thoughts or how to support someone you're worried about. Sort of a good thing to say to people and a not so good thing to say to them. And there are some online safety resources. It's a very difficult subject but very important indeed, isn't it? Yes. it's John Hayes, the Methodist Minister in Keynsham and it's good to be with you again The title for this week is Happy New Year You might be wondering what this means on the first week in September But I guess if you are involved in school, then this would make sense and it's right to offer our thoughts and prayers for all our young people as they start a new year at school, college or university and also for their teachers, parents and carers In the Methodist Church, our new year begins on the 1st of September The 1st of September also marks the beginning of Creation Time with the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation Don't worry that you might have missed out though The season of Creation runs all the way through September and I'd like to share some reflections with you in the weeks to come But back to our Methodist New Year It's often a time when Methodist Ministers who have moved from one place to another are meeting new congregations and some of my friends and colleagues have been sharing their excitement and apprehension about their new roles and places I can well remember that it was a year ago that I arrived in Keynesham It all felt a bit uncertain and I didn't really know how things would work out but so far the people in Keynesham have been really welcoming Although it's a really stressful time I was constantly aware of the presence of God with me Jesus promised a comforter to be with the disciples when he was to lead them and I believe that the Holy Spirit within me enabled my fears to be put to one side Being the new one can be a challenge It's a time when we all need to make some allowances as we get to know each other I've likened the experience of being new to wearing a new pair of shoes It can feel uncomfortable while we get used to wearing them The new shoes may pinch a little until the leather stretches and we start to feel comfortable Think of your most comfortable pair of shoes and I imagine that you'd hardly notice you were wearing them This seems to be one of those things that can be both a blessing and a burden A blessing because becoming comfortable can help us to relax and be ourselves But being comfortable can mean that we don't notice when we might need to respond to a challenge or a problem We can become so comfortable that we don't notice until things are too late Perhaps that could be our watchword as we reflect on the season of creation over the next few weeks Well, it's goodbye from me Grace and peace to you all Where there is hope, I know it's there Within and deep in your heart today And where Wow Yes, I don't think I've ever heard that one before Well, we'll find out when we get the answers Well, let's have some what's ons then in the near future Now it seems to be the time of year for Heritage Open Days in all sorts of ways So from the 8th to the 11th of September it's Heritage Open Days and Keynsham Abbey has a very special Open Day It says, come and visit one of Keynsham's hidden gems wander around the remains of this significant medieval abbey founded in 1166 and experience a guided talk given by local experts Now here are the details In fact it's on two days on Saturday 9th and Saturday 16th September from 2 to 5pm the talk will be at 2.30pm So why not trot off to Keynsham Abbey at the top of Keynsham Memorial Park Yes, the address is funnily enough Abbey Park in Keynsham And yes, I remember hearing talks about the abbey before Apparently it was a huge thing a major abbey for the whole of the south-west of England Anyway, something completely different then You can explore, see and listen to the history of Methodism from the 1700s to today Curators will introduce you to the story of how John and Charles Wesley and Methodists since have influenced the growth and development of life in Keynsham Take in the church's beautiful original features enjoy an organ recital daily at 11am and browse a display of archived photographs Right, when is this?
