The transcription is a podcast episode where the host, Annika Allen, talks about Taylor Swift's music. She wants to expand listeners' music tastes and introduces Taylor Swift's albums, starting with her self-titled album. Annika also discusses the re-release of Taylor Swift's albums and the transition from country to pop music. She plays songs like "Picture to Burn," "Dear John," and "Mean." She then introduces Taylor Swift's album "1989" and plays the song "Out of the Woods." Annika mentions other country artists who transitioned to pop and discusses the sound of Taylor Swift's earlier albums. Overall, she aims to introduce listeners to Taylor Swift's music and encourage them to give it a chance. baby lock them door and turn on sound brakes radio okay guys welcome back to sound brakes radio this is Annika Allen your favorite American girl and today is a great day for me because today we are doing the Taylor Swift podcast now you do not have to be a Swiftie to listen to this podcast my goal is of course to expand your music taste and I am hoping out of her 10 albums that I can get you guys to like at least one song because trust me it is not all just girl broken heart dumping a guy music it's not all breakup albums I promise there's a lot of depth but of course I am biased as I am a teenage girl that grew up listening to Taylor Swift so to be honest it is a little bit of me just wanting to listen to music that I like but that's the point of this is that every once in a while to expand your music taste you have to listen to something that maybe you don't want to listen to at first and you'll get over it because I promise you will find a song that you like out of the many that I'm going to play because she has a lot of songs and albums so today as I'm recording this actually she has re-released an album called 1989 which she originally released nine years ago and I am going to explain the re-release of her albums later on about halfway through this podcast because it is really important to her music career and it doesn't make a lot of sense to people so I wanted to get the opportunity to actually explain it but we are going to start chronologically so I am mostly going to pick my favorites from each album because there's only so much time and as I said she has about 10 albums out plus the re-releases of some albums that include something called a vault track so we're going to start off today with picture to burn which is on her self-titled album Taylor Swift this is picture to burn enjoy I'm obsessive and crazy, that's why you won't mind if I say By the way, I hate that stupid old pickup truck, it never lets me drive The way red sticks on brakes was really bad in my head Watch me strike out and pass on all my wasted time As far as I'm concerned, you're just another picture to burn There's no time for tears, I'm just sitting here, planning my revenge There's nothing stopping me from going out with all of your best friends And if you come around, say you're sorry to me My daddy's gonna show you how sorry you'll be Cause I hate that stupid old pickup truck, it never lets me drive The way red sticks on brakes was really bad in my head Watch me strike out and pass on all my wasted time As far as I'm concerned, you're just another picture to burn And if you're listening, you better keep it to yourself Cause coming back around here would be bad for your health Cause I hate that stupid old pickup truck, it never lets me drive The way red sticks on brakes was really bad in my head Watch me strike out and pass on all my wasted time In case you haven't heard, I really, really hate that stupid old pickup truck It never lets me drive The way red sticks on brakes was really bad in my head Watch me strike out and pass on all my wasted time As far as I'm concerned, you're just another picture to burn Burn, burn, burn, baby, burn Just another picture to burn Burn, burn, burn, baby, burn Hypothetically, it really is, but you can't say that it is, about John Mayer And he tried to sue her for it because the song is called Dear John But there is no indication that it is about him Except for his signature guitar strum is played in the intro So this is Dear John Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Long were the nights when my days once revolved around you Counting my footsteps, praying the floor won't fall through again My mother accused me of losing my mind, but I swore I was fine You paint the blue sky, then go back and turn it to rain And I lived in your chess game, but you changed the rules every day Wondering which version of you I might get on the phone with tonight Well, I stopped picking up, and this song is to let you know why Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone Don't you think I was too young to be met with a girl in a dress? Cried the whole way home, I should have known Well, maybe it's me and my blind optimism to blame Well, maybe it's you and your sickness to give love and take it away You add the name to your long list of traitors who don't understand And I look back in regret, how I ignored when they said Run as fast as you can Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone Don't you think I was too young to be met with a girl in a dress? Cried the whole way home Dear John, I see it all now that was wrong Don't you think that I seem too young to be played by your dark, twisted games When I loved you so, I couldn't help You are an expert at gory and keeping lies blurry And never am I blessed by the ache in your head And all the girls said you weren't right Cause I was, but I still knew what you were to them But I took your matches before fire could catch me So don't look now I'm shining like fireworks over your sandy sand Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone Don't you think I was too young to be met with a girl in a dress? Cried the whole way home Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone Don't you think I was too young to be met with a girl in a dress? Don't you think I was too young You should've known You should've known Don't you think I was too young You should've known You, with your words like knives and swords and weapons that you use against me You, have knocked me off my feet again, got me feeling like a nothing You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard, calling me out when I'm wounded You, picking on a weaker man You can take me down with just one single blow But you don't know, but you don't know Someday I'll be living in a big old city And all you're ever gonna be is me Someday I'll be digging a field you can't hit me And all you're ever gonna be is mean Why you gotta be so mean? You, with your twitching sides and your wildfire lies and your humiliation You, have pointed out my flaws again I don't already see them I walk with my head down, trying to block you out Cause I never interview I just wanna feel okay I bet you got pushed around Somebody made you call But the cycle ends right now Cause you can't lead me down that road And you don't know, but you don't know Someday I'll be living in a big old city And all you're ever gonna be is me Someday I'll be digging a field you can't hit me And all you're ever gonna be is mean Why you gotta be so mean? And I can't see you here from now in a bar Talking over a football game With that same big loud opinion But nobody's listening Watched up and ranting about the same old bits of sin Drunken groans and all about how I can't sing But all you are is mean All you are is mean And a liar, and pathetic, and alone in life And mean, and mean, and mean, and mean But someday I'll be living in a big old city And all you're ever gonna be is me Someday I'll be digging a field you can't hit me And all you're ever gonna be is mean Why you gotta be so mean? Someday I'll be living in a big old city And all you're ever gonna be is mean Why you gotta be so mean? Someday I'll be digging a field you can't hit me And all you're ever gonna be is mean Why you gotta be so mean? Alright, so it's very obvious that these last two albums that we've been listening to, which are Taylor Swift's first and her third album, are country albums. So she released one more album after this, titled Red, and then transitioned to a pop artist. She was very famous in both genres and their realms, and did it so successfully that people very often compare her to Shania Twain, who I believe also made that transition from a country artist to a pop artist. As well as an example of today is Dolly Parton, who was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, if you can believe that, since she started out as a bluegrass country artist. But yeah, I don't really agree that the first three albums were particularly country albums, since they do have kind of this sass element to them that doesn't really resonate with many country artists of today, since they're more traditional or country folk. Anyways, welcome to the pop craze that constantly played on loop, all over the radius of America, at least. And this is the album 1989, which she recently re-released. But we're gonna start off with Out of the Woods. Enjoy. Out of the Woods When discovered The rest of the world was black and white But we were in screaming color And I said the same thing Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? I can't let it know Last December We were built to fall apart And fall back together Ooh, your neck was hanging from my neck The night we couldn't quite forget We decided, we decided To move the furniture so we could dance Baby, like we stood a chance To a paper airplane Flying, flying, flying And I remember thinking Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? And I remember when it was late to do The funny stitches and the hustle and drool And you started crying, baby, I did too And the sun came up, I'm looking at you And I remember when we couldn't take the heat I walked out, I said, I'll set you free But the sun got me just free And the sun came up, you're looking at me You're looking at me You're looking at me Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we in the period? Are we out of the woods yet? your ending Big reputation I wanna be your ending I wanna be your ending I wanna be your first I wanna be your ending I wanna be your ending Ending So it's very obvious that Reputation is a big change of pace It is the black revenge hate album that is just directed towards her old management company as well as the main focus is Kanye West The entire purpose is obviously that her reputation has changed Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift receiving an award in 2009 at the VMAs and it very obviously embarrassed and upset her and it doesn't really matter in the long run but it matters a whole bunch to her so in 2016 he released a song called Famous and it was basically about him taking credit for Taylor Swift being famous and he released a line saying I made that which was a B I don't know if I'm allowed to curse on here Famous and he released a doctored phone call of her basically saying yes this is totally fine for you to release I agree with the message something along those lines Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West his wife at the time both released this and said you know there is no reason that she should be fighting this she's a liar and a snake and so everybody basically said Taylor Swift is over there was a hashtag trending on Twitter saying Taylor Swift is over party hashtag and she blacked out all her social medias and went basically radio silent for an entire year and then randomly released Reputation her slogan for the album is there will be no explanation only reputation and the whole point is she is taking her reputation back she released a couple songs on this album Look What You Made Me Do This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things with just the meaning of you stole all the work that I have done and it was also kind of directed towards her management company which I can explain later about her re-recordings but Reputation is basically a hate letter to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian I'm going to play a song that I particularly like off this album called Don't Blame Me and I really hope you guys like it since Reputation is just so so different from all of her other albums and I think it's important to listen to as a part of her story enjoy Don't blame me Love made me crazy Doesn't show me doing it right Lord save me My drug is my baby I'll be using for the rest of my life I've been Breaking hearts a long time And Toying with the mold of be cool I would be cool I would be cool I would be cool I would be cool I would be cool I would be cool I would be cool I would be cool I would be cool He's dead He's dead S.E. A friend of mine We meet up every Tuesday night For dinner and a glass of wine S.E. The news in flee Her husband's acting different And it sounds like infidelity S.E. That ain't my mother wanna find That ain't my jewelry on her joint account No, there ain't no doubt I think I'm gonna call her now She said I think he did it But I just can't prove it I think he did it But I just can't prove it I think he did it But I just can't prove it No, nobody, no crime But I ain't letting up Until the day I die No, no I think he did it No, no I think he did it S.E. Wasn't there Tuesday night at Olive Garden At her job or anywhere He reports his missing wife And I notice when I pass his office Look, it's got some brand new ties And his sister's moving Raising S.E. Betting everything No, there ain't no doubt Somebody's gotta catch him now I think he did it But I just can't prove it I think he did it But I just can't prove it I think he did it But I just can't prove it No, nobody, no crime But I ain't letting up Until the day I die No, no I think he did it No, no He did it Good thing My daddy made me get a voting license When I was fifteen And I cleaned enough houses To know how to cover up a scene Good thing S.E.'s sister's gonna swear She was with me Good thing His mistress took out a big License service policy They think she did it But they just can't prove it They think she did it But they just can't prove it She thinks I did it But she just can't prove it No, nobody, no crime I wasn't letting up until the day he No, nobody, no crime I wasn't letting up until the day he No, nobody, no crime I wasn't letting up until the day he died So I have been hinting at it basically the whole podcast But I am only going to play one re-recorded album Which is Red Taylor's version Which happens to be my favorite It includes vault songs Which means that they were originally scrapped from the album When she released it So for instance it was released in 2012 And she added 15 songs to the re-recorded album But basically her first six albums were owned by Big Machine Records And when she tried to buy her masters They said no That unless she provided them with six additionally successful albums That they would not give her her original masters And so her plan was to re-record her six albums And therefore own them That is the purpose Each of the re-recorded albums have additional songs called vault tracks And they are really quite good But the whole intent and purpose may not seem very meaningful But to Taylor Swift and her brand It is to own her music, her voice, her name, and her reputation Okay, we're moving on to Red Taylor's version Which as I said is I think tied for my favorite album I know I keep saying that, my favorite song, favorite album But the point is this is the first re-recorded album of the podcast And the vault songs were scrapped from the original album As I described earlier This album was released in 2012 And when she re-recorded she actually added 15 songs Which is a lot of songs But this album is actually about Jake Gyllenhaal If you guys know who that is She famously wrote a 10 minute song about him, All Too Well And go give it a listen I'm not going to feature it in the podcast Because I know some of you guys would send me hate mail for that That would be horrible for anti-Taylor Swift fans And so I won't do that to you But we're going to do upbeat favorite songs of mine I'm going to do that because the past two albums were a little slower And had more intense lyrics So this one's just kind of catchy This is I Bet You Think About Me Enjoy 3 a.m. and I'm still awake I'll bet you're just fine Fast asleep in your city You're better than mine And this girl in your bed Has a fine pedigree And I'll bet your friends tell you She's better than me Well I tried to fit into your upper crust circle Yeah they let me fit in Back when we were in love All these little realms Talking about the meaning of life And the books that just saved them That I hadn't heard of But now that we're done and we're sober I'll bet you couldn't sleep When you realize I'm harder to forget Than I was to leave And I bet you think about me You grew up in a silver soon-dated community Glamorous, shiny, bright, severely hilled I was raised on a farm, no it wasn't a mansion Just living room dancing and kitchen table girls But you know what they say Do you have who you fall for And you and I fell like an early spring snow But reality cracks me You said we're too different You laughed at my dream You rolled your eyes at my joke And this turns superior thinking Do you have all the faith that you need I don't have to be your strength to know that You'll never be happy And I bet you think about me I bet you think about me Yeah, I bet you think about me Oh, lock it all out Your voice is so loud, babe Why did you let her go? Does it make you feel sad That the love that you're looking for Is the love that you had? Now you're out in the world Searching for your soul Scared not to be hip Scared to get old The only thing that made for me Saddest lifetime you felt free Was when I'm sad and mad at That you were with me But now that we're done and it's over I bet it's hard to believe Thought it burned out I'm harder to forget Than I was to leave And I bet you think about me I bet you think about me Yeah, I bet you think about me I bet you think about me When you're out and you're cool And you need some comfort every week I bet you think about me When you're out with your organic shoes And your million dollar couch I bet you think about me When you say, oh my god, she's insane She wrote a song about me I bet you think about me I bet you think about me Which is absolutely insane. It was a three-hour show. And I forced my mom to listen to it all the time. And she, I think, got Stockholm Syndrome and started loving it. And I am so grateful for Taylor Swift's music because it genuinely is catchy and has been playing on the radio my whole life. But it brought my mom and I together in a way we couldn't have without her. And I truly hope that you guys liked at least one song that I picked and that you can hear Taylor Swift in a better light so that you don't just immediately judge her for being a girl who writes songs about her exes or, you know, is just a waste of space as an artist. Because I don't really think that's true. I think people just judge her really quickly because she's fun, pop, blah, blah, blah. And some people don't like that. I think she's an incredibly hard worker and has so many layers and literally hides Easter eggs in everything that she does like years in advance which takes really a lot of work that a lot of people don't do as an artist. I think that should be really looked upon. I don't know too many other artists literally female or male who have been able to have such a level of success that she has in her career or in the music industry for that matter. And she's been in it for like over 17 years so I really think that you guys should just give her some props. That's all I'm saying. You can hate her. Whatever you want to do with Taylor Swift after this. But I have successfully made you listen to like at least over 10 songs by Taylor Swift. Hopefully you sat through it with not a frown on your face. I know that I will always be grateful for listening to a song with messaging that I understand or something that just has a catchy tune that makes me feel less alone in the world. That's what music is for and I won't be shamed for liking Taylor Swift. So next week is dad music. It's a very big change of pace for you guys as listeners. So I don't have a question this week but I'd love for you to send in some fan mail or something or write in to our station that Anika Allen from Soundbreaks Radio made you listen to Taylor Swift for an entire hour and will be listening to her podcast only from now on. That would be amazing. Actually listen to my friends on Soundbreaks. They've got some pretty good podcasts, I promise. So tell your friends because my podcast is actually pretty cool and I truly am expanding your music taste and that was my goal. So next week is dad music because my dad was born in the 60s and his music taste was most definitely passed down to me. But anyways, have a great week. Bye.
