There were some deaths that weren't very unusual, but the interesting part was trying to determine the culprit. Initially, Vance, the host, was suspected, but he was ill and incapable of committing the murders. When someone was poisoned, suspicion shifted towards Poe and Agatha, as they had easy access to medication and pharmacies. Ellery, who had expertise in magic, could have easily spiked a drink, especially since his uncle owned a pharmacy. Well, they weren't particularly unique deaths, but the mystery came from trying to figure out who did them. The first suspect was the obvious choice of Vance, since he was the host, but he was sick and in no condition to kill anyone. Once someone was killed with poison, the suspicion switched to Poe and Agatha, who had the easiest access to medicines and pharmacies. Ellery would have had the easiest time slipping something into a drink since he was skilled at magic, and it turned out that his uncle actually owned a pharmacy too.
