The Curator of the Year, Pandorones, talks about the Banneker PT program for elementary school students. They go on field trips, such as Kans Kids Fitness Day for 3rd graders and Are You Faster Than a 5th Grader? 2-mile run for 5th graders. They also visit Kauffman Stadium for baseball activities and have the opportunity to see a Royals game. The PE program aims to expose students to different sports and celebrate the school's 50th anniversary. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the Curator of the Year! Hello, I am Pandorones, and I will be talking about the Banneker PT program. This is an elementary school level PE class, and just kind of fun stuff we'll be doing throughout the year. I'm going to start out by talking about some of the big parts of the school year. We've got some field trips that I take our 4th and 5th graders on, even 3rd grade. We might even be doing stuff with K-5 as well. But mainly those intermediate 3-5 is where we do our big field trips for. One of the first field trips that we have is called Kans Kids Fitness Day. It is a big deal for our 3rd graders. It's a lot like a field day where we take the kids out to a high school nearby. We get to have some of the high school kids volunteer to run some of these field day style games. We take every 3rd grade class in our entire school district in Kansas City, Kansas. We bring them out, and we get to have just a bunch of fun full day out there. It's kind of like a, it's a lot like field day for the kids, but it's a special one for our 3rd graders. They get to meet other 3rd graders in our district, and it's just a very fun experience overall. Lots of work put in by the PE teachers to make this one happen, but it is phenomenal. Our 5th grade field trip at the end of the year, it's called Are You Faster Than a 5th Grader? Kind of a spin off of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, but Are You Faster? Where our 5th grade kiddos will get to compete in a 2-mile run against their PE teachers, the superintendent of the district, and against their peers. It's a 2-mile run. We start at a local community college, and then run all the way to another high school where we have a big party at the end, getting people together and having a bunch of fun that way. Another field trip that I got specifically for my students at Banneker, I'm taking 4th and 5th grade on a trip to Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals. We're going to tour. We're doing some fun at-bat baseball stuff, some math lessons with it, a little bit of reading. So we get cross-curriculum going on, a mix between sport and our literacy and math. It'll be a bunch of fun. Thank you to Kansas City Royals and the Urban Youth Academy for setting that up with us, reaching out to us and getting that done. They've been amazing to work with. They do a phenomenal job, and I'm so happy to be partnered with them to get that going as well. They're also providing us the opportunity in the spring to take the school out. Hopefully K-5, see a Royals game early in the season. Getting experience or getting the kids the experience of going out to professional sporting events, I think is pretty important. Getting them involved in sports, especially baseball, where they need a little bit of help getting going. Being part of an urban community, baseball isn't the biggest thing, but we have just a great setup here to expose our students to that. And I cannot be more excited going into this year. We just had our 50th anniversary at school. We're going to move in a different direction. Big party at the school. It was awesome to see old teachers come by. Definitely the older teachers who've been here for 15 to 20 years, they had some of their old co-workers come back, old principals were able to see them. Young teachers like myself, we were able to meet older teachers, get to meet those people that we heard stories about, and really just kind of got to appreciate what our community is like and the impact that this school has had on many others. But that pretty much summarizes the PE program at Banneker with leaving school, going on our field trips. Those big events that we kind of work all year towards getting better at, building up those skills so we can show off a little bit in front of the entire district. So this is Andrew Owens signing off, and I hope you guys have a great rest of your day. ♪♪♪
