Video manipulation involves adding or removing sections of a video or its audio using tools like KineMaster and DaVinci Resolve. It uses artificial intelligence to create replicas of a person's face and make them appear to say things they never actually said. The benefits of video manipulation include improving video quality, editing scenes in movies, creating new job opportunities, and enhancing education and tourism videos. However, it can also be used for malicious purposes, such as spreading false information or damaging someone's reputation. While video manipulation is a tool that can have both positive and negative effects, it should be used with caution. Hello, and welcome to our podcast. We are your hosts, Andrew, Daniel, and Harry. And in this podcast, we will talk about the benefits and risks of video manipulation on society. Firstly, we will say what video manipulation actually is. It is adding or removing sections of a video or video's audio. You can do this using sites such as KineMaster and DaVinci Resolve. You can also correct colors and filters and create transitions between video clips. They work by using artificial intelligence, which is given many photos of a person. Then it uses machine learning to look at the photos of someone's face and then analyze the images to make a replica of a person's face saying a number of words. Then they can swap the original face with the face created. It makes it appear like a person is saying something, in fact, they have never actually said. Now we talk about the benefits. It can benefit the quality of videos by creating seamless transitions and you can edit your video with color grading or adding special effects. Video manipulation can also be used to edit scenes in a movie instead of the entire scene having to be retaken, which saves the movie company money. Video manipulation can create new jobs for people to work in by editing these videos. It can be used for education as well as editing videos to remove unnecessary information and only including facts that the students need to learn. They can also have words that appear on the screen highlighting the importance of the information in that section, which can help reinforce the learning for students. It can be used for tourism and by making a video on the attractions in the local area. They can make attractions more attractive by adding filters, removing people from scenes in the video, removing background noise and adding catchy music in the background to catch the watcher's attention. There are many benefits of deepfakes. For example, let's say an actor has died while a movie is most likely filmed. A deepfake version of the actor can save the movie company time by just creating a scene with a standard actor replacing the dead one. After a shot, you can replace the standard actor's face and voice with the face and voice of an actor who has died so you can have a realistic replacement instead of rewriting a movie script and reshooting most of the movie scenes. There are some problems with video manipulation. Rival governments and political opponents can use altered videos to make it seem a politician has said something they haven't said. They can edit their speeches and remove the part of the speech that adds context, that can make it seem that they support an enemy group. Example, make someone appear pro-Russian in the Russian-Ukrainian war or add a new section or replacing an already existing one where it seems like they have said something offensive but it is actually a deepfake who has said it and as the technology improves, it becomes increasingly hard to tell the video is fake. They can also make it seem a businessman has said something controversial which can make people stop investing in their company, potentially losing them hundreds of thousands of euros. While there is confusion on it, if the video is real, filtered videos can also decrease adults and teenagers' self-esteem by showing unrealistic images of beauty potential, leading to them becoming depressed. In conclusion, video manipulation can be used for harmless things such as improving video quality but it can also be used for malicious purposes. It's not only the people that can use it that makes it bad, not the technology. What we think is that video manipulation is only a tool and can be used for many purposes but there should be more careful consideration about how we use it. Thank you for listening to our podcast. We hope you enjoyed it.
