Supplemental coaching is similar to self-development. Combining self-development with an advisor or mentor can accelerate talent and self-development. Only one person in a leadership group was involved in a self-development program. People need to ask questions and find motivation to engage in self-development. A mentoring relationship can accelerate talent and self-development. Now, when it comes to self-development, you could also argue the point that supplemental coaching is very much like self-development. I think when it comes to self-development, one of the best things that we can do is facilitate a peer-to-peer relationship or a mentoring relationship. You know, often people want to go from point A to point B to point C, and sometimes doing that on their own is possible. But if you combine self-development with an advisor, a mentor, a coach, it will absolutely accelerate someone's not only talent development, but their self-development. Recently, I was in front of a leadership group, and I asked how many people in the room, and it was middle management, were involved in some type of structured self-development program. Only one person raised their hand out of 20. And I said, what are you doing? She said, well, I'm reading a book. And there's nothing wrong with that, by the way. That's self-development. I said, how many of you have a personal coach? Nobody's hands went up. See, here's the funny thing. There are so many statistics out there talking about that people are more engaged, more motivated when they're learning, when they're fueling their brain, yet out of 20 people, very few were participating in self-development. So we have to ask questions. We have to tie it to someone's motivator. And then if you facilitate a really good mentoring peer-to-peer relationship, you will accelerate talent development and self-development.
