the internet I don't know how you found me But I'm sure glad you did And put some music in my email Well, it was meant for us to hook up And the forces above us doing that Absolutely You're a lead singer, former lead singer Of a great group called The Drifters And you've been doing these Motown tribute shows But recently you embarked on a career Trying to make some great country music And I'm looking at a 16 song album That you have out on your website It's called The Stories From My Heart And I say this all the time on the radio I think country music tells the best stories So I can see why you want to do something In country music too Well, you know what it is I'm a storyteller And when I write songs They're always based around a guitar And even as a kid I listened to country music Because I spent a lot of years in Jamaica When I was Jamaican So I was a little boy, you know, until 12 So they played a lot of country music too Down there back then when I was a kid And I always liked country music Because it was great for telling stories And it told great stories And so I've always written like that So it's not like I'm just trying it for some fad It's all been a part of my fiber And it's just the way I tend to write, you know That is awesome And, you know, in your heart You've lived a cool life, you know Being in Jamaica And then you started out You was raised in the UK Went to Jamaica Now you're back here in the States So you've traveled the world, haven't you? I have been blessed, you know I've seen most of the world And I had a passion for traveling And still do it Even on my own time But, you know, our life is short, Tim And the world isn't as big as we think it is So if you can see as much of it as you can And the more you see, the more you understand Yeah, absolutely And boy, it gives you a lot of inspiration To write songs, too, when you do that Oh, yeah, I'll give you a story I mean, Jamaica, for instance I go up in the hills And I spend time with people who are farmers And who get up at three in the morning They're in the field before sun up When they come back They hand a cake with dirt in the nails And boots and stuff like that And I'll sit there and I'll sit And I'll talk to them And just sit and chill Because my wife's uncle was a farmer And I'd go up in the hills And I'd just sit down with him and talk, man Because people who put their hand in the soil Are genuine people If you live all your life in a concrete world You kind of get the text from the real meaning of life You know what I mean? Yeah, that's right Those fruits and vegetables may come from Walmart But that's not where they actually come from, is it? No It's those ones that put their hands in the dirt That make that happen And if you get them ripened from the tree Or from the soil Pretty mature It's like It's unbelievable the taste So supermarket food Don't compare to the stuff that you grow And pick off the tree when it's ripe I've experienced that a lot in my life And I still go back and do it You know, I have too It's the best Actually, when I was in San Diego That's where I went to broadcasting school But I played golf out there quite a bit And we picked an orange off an orange tree Right there on the golf course And it's the best Oh yeah, it's warm The sun is warm in its flesh The juice in your mouth is warm from the sun There's nothing like it, Tim So you and I know what we're talking about That is true, boy That's the good stuff Former member of the Drifters Lead singer And you were with a group called the Persuasions, too Tell me about the process of becoming The lead singer of the Drifters That was a great group I love them Well, I didn't sing lead for that group Because they had the original singer then And the original bass singer I was just singing background with the group Okay, background with them Lead for the Persuasions Okay Yeah So it's kind of a turned around process Because when I was like 13 years old I met one of the members of the Persuasions And he taught me harmony And the knowledge he gave me Allowed me to later years To audition for the Drifters and make it And toured with the Drifters for almost 10 years And then an opportunity came up Where I got a call from Persuasions To sing on their album Persuasions sing The Beatles And from that relationship I went full circle And started doing albums with them And when that lead singer of the group left The first lead singer, Jerry Lawson A tremendous lead singer and arranger himself I was called in to join them on their next album And one thing led to another I started arranging the songs And became the de facto lead singer For the group since then And it's been an amazing journey That is awesome And it says that you're also a singer-songwriter An author and a show producer So that's all good stuff Oh, Tim, I've had the pleasure of writing with people Like Yorma Kalkanen from Jefferson Airplane Who is a very good friend And we've written songs together And recorded together I've just been blessed, man I've had a blessed life I've worked with Bruce Springsteen Steve Van Sant on his album I've worked with Beer Naked Ladies A Canadian rock group Arranging an album A vocal album with them So I've been blessed, man That is awesome Does your phone just kind of like Ring off the hook and people say Hey, I've got a song idea I've got a collaboration Things like that Do you co-write with others? Do you write just by yourself? A lot of times I write on my own But I always have the door open to collaborate Like if I hear an artist that I like I'll start thinking about how they sing Or how they play Like with Yorma Kalkanen that was the case He has a ranch called Furpiece Ranch Where artists come to the camp And instruct general people How to improve their musicianship In Palmer, Ohio And so listening to his guitar picking style Because he has a very unique guitar picking style I heard him in my head So I started writing a song with that And I said, Yorma, we've got to write a song together But I'm open to collaboration But I do get, you know People sending me snippets of ideas And say, hey, you should write about this theme Or you should write about that theme And I tell them thanks But I'm open I like working with people Because you can only grow When you work with someone else, you know? But not everybody wants to collaborate Some people like to work on it for themselves Right Well, and I ask that because A lot of people that listen to this show You know, the independent artists Support the other artists And everybody wins when we work together And a lot of great collaborations have come Between people listening to this program And they've even got together And done some duets together vocally So I think that's really cool I like that, you know, I'm open You know, my ears and door is open You know That is great Well, our ears are open too for this first song I'm getting ready to play Called Backseat with the Radio On In the Backseat with the Radio On Tell us about this one Well, you know there is Being in love, you know It's about I wrote a story about a relationship You know, you fall in love with somebody You get married, you get kids And job pressure, everything gets to you And you start to lose The personal attraction with each other You start to get a little bit lazy Or you're just too tired And the song is to remind us that You know, don't lose the passion You know You remember when you first met The things you did Everybody knows what the backseat of a car is like Yeah So The song is about a theme that I think most people relate to You know, there's passion You know, in a relationship It's a passion that kept you Together in the first place And you should never forget that You know, sometime you will get tired And day to day life and commitment Will dull that process But you always got to try to revive it Absolutely You know, in my day And you may be around the same age as me But it was backseat with the radio on At the drive in movie Before the movie started Then you jump to the front seat to watch the movie I think we know about that I remember drive in movies very well Yeah, that is There's some classic movies I saw Grease for the very first time At the drive in movie Oh man, did you see the whole movie? I've seen it many times since That was a joke Yes, I did watch the movie And John Travolta is actually singing And there's a drive in scene at that movie You know, so that was pretty cool But I love those classics And boy, the Drifters, they made some classics, didn't they? They certainly did And I had a chance to meet a lot of the original guys Ben King I knew him I used to laugh I said, Ben, you remind me of my dad He looked like my father And there's Doc Green And there's Charlie Thomas Out there at the original Bay Center It was history, man I got a chance to work with Wolfman Jack Dick Clark And all those people I call it the school of American rock and roll University I went to I met every iconic guy You know what I used to ask them, Jim? What's that? I used to ask them about songwriting I used to ask them What would you say to me As one of the original artists And you know what Benny King told me? He said, be yourself Don't try to copy anybody Be yourself Because if one of your songs Is recognized and people enjoy it Everything you've written will become brand new Because everybody's going to want to hear Your music But he said, don't copy anybody Just be yourself And I've all lived by that credo So when I write I don't write with any particular Thing in mind I just write whatever I'm feeling And I keep working Until I say exactly what I want to say And backseating readers said Everything I wanted to say about it And that is so true There's these young ones There's these young grandkids Of great country music stars in the past Like Conway Twitty's grandson Loretta Lynn's granddaughter Emmy Russell's currently on American Idol And I'm playing her music And they have to be their self They can't be grandma They can't be grandpa That's already been done But they have a different unique sound of their own And I think that's what's so neat and fresh In the world of country music today I'll give one advice to anybody If you concoct Some fake identity for yourself And that fake identity Takes off You're doomed to have to live that fake identity For the rest of your life That's why some of these artists Go off the deep end Because actors were created for some of them That were not really who they are So my advice is Learn to live with yourself Mature your art through who you are And if people embrace it You'll never be depressed You'll never feel That you have to do anything you don't want to do Because you're going to be doing you For the rest of your life And that's all it is That's a secret And if the song that they make is great And it hits big We anticipate the next one We can't wait to hear it, can we? you're living under That you're making a living under And you have a roof over your head So that's what the whole song meant to me And I'll tell you a story The first time I performed it At a big concert I got to the chorus And I started singing And I looked in the audience And people were mouthing the words And it just went for the first time And I said, did I plagiarize somebody's song? But I realized what happened And they knew where the words were going So they wanted to sing it And by the second chorus They were all singing it And I moved into tears because I wrote the song for that purpose To remind us You know, just All you got to do is travel outside of the country And see what people don't have All you got to do is go outside of the country And see governments that persecute their people And see what we have here But not everybody has the luxury Or the blessing to travel the way you have And I have So the song was my message to us To remember that I love that And you mentioned bridging those gaps That we have in this country And we know how important that is But we take that for granted sometimes Well here just recently There was a bridge that got hit by a ship It was the Francis Scott Key Bridge Up there in Baltimore And Francis Scott Key is famous For writing the National Anthem And when that bridge got destroyed You know, all that shipping stopped Everything that we take for granted In getting our goods and services You know, goes away So it's very important to bridge those gaps And now they're trying to fill that gap And rebuild that And it's going to take a while But you know what? Everybody's on the same page And so it's going to get done faster than later And that's how America does it They come back bigger and better, don't they? Yeah, because you know This country This face was built by people Who came from all over the world And saw the opportunities And it's all these skills That people brought from other parts of the world They were so How would you call this word? Clearwater and I would just see him like go nuts, so I know that's definitely not 90s but my brothers were into grunge and rock and I liked the pop music, you know so I was between pop and then like I said that little hint of country from Shania and stuff like that so I feel like if anyone ever goes, you know, if you take a ride with me in my car even though like country is where my heart is and you know that's probably, that is definitely my favorite I still, I'm all over the place and I just, I'm like a ping pong ball I'm like oh, I'm going to go to this genre and that genre and this genre that, it means more than you know Absolutely Now let's talk about something real serious here life changing obstacles is what shaped you into the country music industry including a CRPS diagnosis tell us what that is Oof, okay so CRPS stands for Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome basically that is, it's a chronic pain disorder it's neurologic pain disorder if you will the brain basically does not process pain the way it's supposed to and your body gets stuck in sort of a pain loop so to kind of sum this story up and what brought me back to music I worked as actually a veterinary technician and for, oh my gosh, almost 20 years and I had my own pet care business, I was a certified dog trainer and I did a lot of in-home stuff my husband and I were leaving for the southern Caribbean cruise and being from Chicago, January 30, 2019 it was 60 below here, we had a lovely polar vortex and we were dropping a key off at our neighbor's house and I fell down, I shattered my wrist and doctor's like yeah you'll be good to go in about 6-8 weeks and well that was the complete opposite for me and I ended up, you know, CRPS happens after a traumatic injury heart attack or stroke and for me it obviously was the injury and I lost my business I didn't know if I ever was going to get my health back because a lot of people never reach remission and I'm very fortunate that I have and for the most part I live pretty pain free which is just a blessing and I, so basically my whole 2019 was kind of like I hate to say this out loud but it was almost like my personal COVID and then 4 months later COVID happened and shut the world down so I really just started digging into songwriting I had been a musician when I was younger and I sort of put it on the shelf for 20 years and then basically I just started working with an artist coach in Nashville over Zoom and I said, you know, there's nothing wrong with singing covers of other people's songs but I really want to dig into music theory and start exploring you know, how do I start digging in and writing my own stuff so from that Trust Me, which was my very first single ever the one I had mentioned before about my mother and then I wrote Falling Into Nashville which was really the whole, it was actually based on the entire story of what we're talking about, me falling and you know, basically it turned my life upside down but then, you know, the silver lining was it brought me back to music and I couldn't be happier but yeah, CRPS is something that many, many people struggle with and it is definitely one of the rare disorders that a lot of people are really fighting to raise awareness for so it's, again, I feel very fortunate and very lucky but it is something that, you know, thank you for bringing it up too for your listeners it's something that definitely needs attention yeah, absolutely, I've done hundreds of these interviews and I never saw that in anybody's bio before so it obviously is a rare disease but something that you deal with probably still on a daily basis and it's great to be able to tell that story and maybe help somebody else too yeah, you never, really in the moral of that is you never really know what someone is going through with something like that like that's something where it's one of those diseases where it's silent, somebody's going to look okay but they darn well might not be feeling okay you know, because some people on like different forums and different stuff online there are different groups, you know, like support groups and stuff like that one of the things that constantly comes up is you know, a lot of people don't fake being sick you know, you don't want to go to work or whatever but people with stuff like this you know, like, I'm not faking being sick I'm faking being well because you just don't want to I don't know, it gets tiring talking about it like when people ask or they just don't understand and so it's, yeah, it's it's interesting I'm again, very fortunate and blessed I was surrounded with the right people to help me through that time in my life and I have my flares here and there but for the most part, I'm good so I'm very grateful and I think music helps keep me in that place absolutely well, you know, and it's so therapeutic and it helps others through a difficult time you know, I was working with the theater here recently they'll tell that on stage, you know you can just recall a song and you might not even know all the words to that song but as soon as it comes on the radio it either brings back a happy time, a sad time or helps you, you know, heal from some pain that you've gone through a lot of times it's emotional pain from a breakup or something like that in a country song but it can also be physical pain too like you've experienced, huh? oh, for sure, for sure music, it just hits on so many different levels it's crazy and it's amazing what it can do so, yeah, definitely but again, that's the magic of country music boy, and it tells the best stories too it does, it does, for sure in fact, you can have a song title called Rockin' My Shoe and make a great country song out of it and I've had that happen to me many times but tell us specifically about this one and we'll play it for the folks on the radio oh, cool well, Rockin' My Shoe, I was sort of having a day nothing like a CRPS kind of a day but just, you know, some people got under my skin but I also was on a mission to write a song about, you know, just basically persevering through life and, you know, just being unstoppable and I remember telling my producer that, you know I said, I want to write, I want that feeling like when you listen to Carrie Underwood's, what was it? I figured it's a snowball's chance to really do anything so I got a real job, quote unquote. Yeah, so then I put it on a shelf until that accident that we talked about a little bit earlier so it's been a minute since I've been wanting to do it. And then finally that switch just slips and you realize, you know what? Why not? I feel like I have stories that I want to tell. I feel like there's things that if I could be a voice for other people with stuff, there's so many things that people go through in life that are universal and I don't know, here I am. Well, I play a lot of artists that are on The Voice. They were on Blake's team of The Voice, now they're on Reba's team. I've interviewed some of her artists, Jordan Rayner that made it to the top nine of last season. If you ever wanted to be on The Voice, you could definitely turn some chairs. You turned mine, that's for sure. Oh, you're just like... You're winning all the brownie points. Yeah, thank you. Now, let me ask you about your name, Annie, too. You mentioned the movie, Annie. Were you named after that? I don't think so. According to my parents, I was nameless for like a week after I was born. I guess I was supposed to be named Rachel. No offense, I have some friends named Rachel, but it's... I don't know, maybe because I was born with the name Anne, I like the name Anne better, so I'm glad she picked it. Because my real name is Anne. And I actually used to get... This is a funny thing. I used to get mad when people called me Annie because if I would introduce myself as Anne and if someone took the liberty to be like, hey, Annie, I was like, really? You know, like, I don't know you. And then after my first cut out in Nashville, somebody says, she goes, well, what's your artist name? And I was like, I have to have one of those, don't I? So my real last name is pretty darn long, so I just shortened it. So Annie Vander, the name was born. It just rolls off the tongue. I love it. I'm going to tell you a story. I think you're probably an animal lover. Most people are. I definitely am. We have a rescue dog. She's coming up on a year that she was born that we had her. We got her in June when she was just a puppy. And she's part Anatolian Shepherd and Boxer, so we named her Annie for the Anatolian Shepherd part. Oh, I love that. So now when I say Annie, I can think of Annie Vander too. How about that? Oh, there you go. That's awesome. All of our dogs, actually, and people names for dogs I think are the best. I've got three. I've got a Frankie Lynn, a Reagan, and, well, Wednesday isn't a people name, but she came with a name. So it's kind of random. Unless, I don't know, Wednesday, that's, oh, what show is that? There's a show. There's a girl named Wednesday. Why am I totally drawing a blank? But, yeah, people names for animals are the best. Yeah, absolutely. Now let me ask you this too. What do you like to do for fun when you're away from the music scene and get out and get some recreation in with your husband or whatever? What do you guys like to do when you're hanging out? Gosh, it's been, like, when we hang out, the music thing has become sort of a little addiction. So he'll do a lot of that too. I catch myself going and just watching other artists, you know, people that I know in the area. So it's still music, and maybe I'm not performing, but I like to just chill out and, you know, and listen to other people. But I guess, you know, when the weather is nice out here, which we only get a few months of that, I love to go outside and just, you know, put some plants in the planters outside. Yep. We have all that in common too. We have what we call a patio oasis. I build a water feature out front. Me and my wife did for each other's anniversary a few years ago, and we love to just sit out there and listen to the waterfall and watch the birds and the squirrels and all that stuff. Oh, yeah. Well, we were talking about love of animals. Like, literally yesterday I came home, I went to the garden center, and I had planted, I don't even know what the names of all the different flowers are, but I spent all this time looking for something that wouldn't strangle itself because these particular containers were smaller. And as quick as I put them in the planter, we have a German Shorthair Pointer is one of our three dogs. She went, took it, ran to the back of the yard, and shredded the heck out of it. And then she did the second one and did the same. I'm like, are you kidding me? Like, I love you, I love you, I swear I love you. And I'm trying to convince myself, like, hey, I still love you. I actually had that happen last night. Our dogs, I was taking them out before, you know, we go to bed at 10 o'clock at night, and I couldn't see it, but in our squirrel and bird feeder, there was a raccoon in there because they've seen it in there before, and they go after that thing and rip the leases out of my hand, and they went crazy last night. But we still love them, don't we? Yeah, dogs are great. And then I guess the other thing, in the summer months, so we started a couple years ago. It's more for fun because our dog is not a winner at this at all, but she's definitely one of the cutest. Our Regan is the English Lab. We started teaching her how to do dock diving. I don't know if you're familiar with what that is. Nick, yes. Yeah, so we started doing that, and she sucks, I'm not going to lie. But she's so cute. She's adorable. Like, she goes there and she, like, almost squeaks, and then she does her little belly flop in the water. So this will be the first year. Our rescue dog hates it. She hates swimming. She can swim super fast, but she's like, you know, I'll just sit on the sidelines and watch. We've got a young German Shorthair, the one who ripped up my flowers, and it will be her first year going to the pool. And she's a super athlete, and she loves the water. So I really hope she loves the sport because for us, the people in that whole community doing that are tons of fun. And, you know, with radio tour and stuff like that, I missed out on it last year. So I cannot wait to get back to the pool and see everybody this year, especially with the new dog. Well, that is awesome. And you never forget your wedding day, do you? No, no, definitely not. Definitely not. Especially if somebody plays like a Shania Twain-Brian White duet, you know, or something like that.
