new music Friday Good tequila, add some lime and throw A little salt on the rim That's all it takes to make the margarita I was drinking and she walked in A pity song, a bar with no walls And a hill of a smile on her face She ordered a drink, sat down next to me And that's a pretty good reason to stay Like minutes on the clock, it makes the world go round Well I'm looking at you and thinking Maybe that somehow We could take what we got The time that we need A little more you and a little more me For a strong turn it on Lift it up underneath the moonlight We could let the summertime run across the ski And get lost in a kiss and do it over again Keep thinking the sun will be coming way too soon Well there's no telling what We can turn this night into If one little dance could lead to another And make the crowd disappear If one right move could turn into You whispering in my ear Why don't we get on right ahead And take what we got The time that we need A little more you and a little more me For a strong turn it on Lift it up underneath the moonlight We could let the summertime run across the ski And get lost in a kiss and do it over again Keep thinking the sun will be coming way too soon Well there's no telling what We can turn this night into Well I'm looking at you and thinking Maybe that somehow We could take what we got The time that we need A little more you I'm Texas proud of what I am I'm Texas proud of what I am I'm Texas proud of what I am I'm Texas proud of what I am I'm Texas proud of what I am I'm Texas proud of what I am You and so and so wrote a good one tonight Oh I love to write That's my happiest thing to do I do it every day Yeah absolutely You have wrote for some of the big names in country music You've sculpted hits for Pam Tillis Whitney Houston who wasn't country But man what a voice in music And George Jones I'm looking at Melissa Manchester I remember her Don't Cry Out Loud or something like that Big song Yeah mine was called Nice Girls I love Melissa Manchester too That's the stuff I grew up listening to And Whitney Houston I played a lot of 80's music before I got into country radio Yeah Moment of Truth Was out several times And it was her movie soundtrack When she did I Want to Dance with Somebody And my song Was on the B side of the original I Want to Dance with Somebody Wow isn't that something You know she had one of the most viewed renditions of the National Anthem She did it before a football game I believe And that one got millions and millions of views She was something else Great singer I was so honored to have her sing one of mine How did this musical writing journey start for you Oh boy Well When I was 8 years old My mother had me taking piano lessons And I wrote my first song called Oh Sad Little Bluebird And then I really I got a guitar in high school And I never really started writing Until I was 25 After my first divorce And I was over in a park Across from the Ivanhoe Cafe In Columbia Missouri And the Ozark Mountain Daredevils Were there in person Singing with us And just standing in a little crowd Singing songs with us And then I was walking home From doing that Seeing the cracks go by on the sidewalk And all of a sudden I remembered Oh wait a minute I'm real depressed I'm getting divorced But wait I wasn't depressed Oh I was singing songs And so I went home and wrote my first few songs Wow isn't that something Well man you're not too far from where I am In Branson in Columbia We're just a couple of hours apart If you were in Columbia Oh I know I know And then the Ozark Mountain Daredevils I met them a couple of years ago When I seen them open up for a group Called McKenna and Brock And I'm friends with them to this day And for folks that may not know The Ozark Mountain Daredevils Also write commercial jingles They wrote a song for O'Reilly Auto Parts Which is the home headquarters In Springfield Missouri And they play that still on the radio And TV all the time O'Reilly Auto Parts The Ozark Mountain Daredevils did it There's a song I wrote With one of the guys And it's on his Silly Grandpa album For kids Yeah So yeah I just have a good time Doing all of that That's awesome I think they've been together as a group For about 50 years as well If I'm not mistaken Oh yeah So that's some good stuff You're 25 And so you're first divorced But you have penned a lot of great songs In fact you were telling me off the air Before we got started That you have a file of over 2000 songs In your library That is a lot of songs Oh yeah I've written a lot more than that I mean upstairs in my attic I have boxes and boxes full of cassettes With a legal sheet Folded into thirds Wrapped around it And one of the cassettes is a song I wrote Because I used to write at 10, 2, and 6 Three times a day Just like they do at sessions I would write five days a week Three songs a day For years and years And now I just write Usually one song a day Because my perfect day is Wake up, take a walk, write a song Play a gig, watch Andy and Mayberry Go to sleep So now I have a very balanced life Absolutely And you've also written for movies as well And television Hollywood Wives you've written for And then the movie My Cousin Vinny I remember seeing that one too Oh yeah And I've had songs in Friends That TV show And Hollywood Wives was a three part mini series And then I've been in a lot of movies I can't remember the name of all of them One fine day I think I had a song in it I can't remember I'm real proud of my song in My Cousin Vinny Because I love that movie That was great I still see clips of that on TikTok And different things like that Joe Pesci was in it I remember And Fred Gwynn, he used to be Herman Monster He was the judge in that movie That was awesome Just hilarious Really good stuff And you've also won some awards You were actually Grammy nominated Twice Yeah My song Lee Greenwood had a number one With I Don't Mind the Thorns You Need the Rose And it was up there And I think it was the Pam Tillis song Cleopatra Queen of Denial Because I wrote other songs with Pam That were out there Like Blue Roses You wrote that one? That is one of her biggest songs Yeah I love Blue Roses It's old style country Our dad Mel Tillis used to hang out Here in Branson quite a bit Had his own theater as a matter of fact Yeah and you know what I took my mother to Branson once To see a bunch of shows And Mel taught me a lot Because when he came out on stage He said I was at the Walmart this morning And I was, you know Whatever he said It just taught me to talk to an audience Like you were talking to one or two other people So that really helped me And then I heard of Lee Greenwood And I had seen his road crew In a restaurant And told them to tell Lee I'd be at his show that night And so he made me stand up with my mama And pointed out that we wrote the Sony thing Isn't that nice? Isn't that nice, that is cool Love Lee Greenwood too You mentioned Mel Tillis talking to people It was interesting He had a noticeable stutter when he talked And he used that to his advantage It disappeared when he sang And that was just crazy good to me It never showed up in a song And if it ever did I'm sure they would re-record it You know I heard this story once That he and his manager Were sleeping in a hotel room one night And Mel woke up And he saw this shadowy figure Pulling his wallet Out of his breeches That were laid across a chair And he was so scared But he stuttered so much He couldn't say we're being robbed So he sang We're being robbed And then they woke up And chased him out Yep, that is awesome Now you're right in the heart of Music City In Nashville, Tennessee And I see you performing a lot of times I think at the Commodore Grill And different places like that And a lot over at the Millennium Maxwell House I just love playing for people And making them laugh Yeah, that is fun And we've got some songs that are going to do that today We're going to play three of your great songs But the reason I was mentioning Nashville Is because you're right in the heart of Music City Where there's a lot of other songwriters That I'm seeing that you're collaborating with Now, do they reach out to you pretty much? Or do you reach out to them? Or do you kind of meet at the venue? Or how's that working? Well, the way it's turned out anymore Is that they reach out to me I've been writing with a lot of 20-something kids I mentor them And some of them just They're the next stars Yeah, that is so neat Pardon me? That is so neat And that's the reason I started this radio program 12 years ago There's so much talent out there And young talent like you mentioned That is trying to get heard on the radio And it's really tough It's different than it used to be, isn't it? Oh yeah, it is Back in the 80s You had to be on a You know, a record company You had to be on one of them But now, you can be your own record company And release everything Through DistroKid Onto all the streaming platforms in the universe And you don't make that much money Off streaming But you can do it all yourself Yeah, absolutely You know, I've talked to so many artists Doing these radio interviews Whether you're in Music City or not You know, there's so many great recording studios around the country But I hear a lot of people doing it in their home studios And it sounds just like something That would have come out of Nashville You know, with the production and all the instruments And some of the guys tell me Yeah, I played this instrument And I put that together And I also did this and this and this So it could be one guy doing several of the instruments, too Yeah, most of my songs I have produced By John Willis Who is an A-string session player And he does radio in his home And he's just brilliant So I just love working with John And he's a great producer as well as a great player That is awesome You're also a great singer And the folks are going to find that out here in just a little bit When I push play on one of your songs Now, let me ask you this From a songwriter to a singer At what point did you say Hey, I think I want to do some recording of my own songs You know, that I've been writing And put these together myself Well, you know It's so funny Because I really didn't have the confidence When I was younger And when I After my second divorce When I went to L.A. I just got an e-mail the other day With a picture of my name on the marquee At the Palomino in L.A. So I was singing my songs out there But I didn't really Think I was that good And I always paid other people Until a couple of years ago And these young kids that I work with Just started pushing me And they go, Jan, everybody loves it When you sing songs So why don't you sing them yourself And put them out And I finally got the confidence And started doing it And now I'm having more fun in my life than I've ever had before That is great And the folks are also going to find out That your songs tell some great stories And boy, that is what is missing In radio right now Some of these artists back in the day Like Johnny Cash, I'll say, for one in particular Could talk through a lot of his songs And he had that voice You know, I'm Johnny Cash And things like that And Boy Name Sue and stuff like that I still hear it on these classic stations And that's what your music reminds me of It's just something that you want to listen to And hear that story behind And they're so well done Thank you. I've got a song called It's a great story song And it was cut by Tim McGraw But it was before he got his deal It was cut by Jerry Lee Lewis' daughter I don't believe she got a deal It was cut by tons of independents But they never made it to the radio And finally, Juice Newton cut it And she had a record deal And it was her single And it was flying up the charts When her record company folded So I haven't really had a big hit with that yet And I think I'm just going to cut it myself Yep, there you go That's how you do it And take a chance And we'd love to have it in our lineup I'd love to hear it If you do cut it Be sure to send it to me Okay, I definitely will You know, there's a lady that comes to the theater That I broadcast at I'll be doing the show there from tomorrow night At the Pierce Arrow Theater That I'm sure you know real well She was married to Merle Haggard at one time From Vienna, Missouri And she made a big name for herself as a songwriter But still at 80 years old She's a great performer And I love watching her play on stage Ah, yeah, yeah There's no limit Look at the Rolling Stones They're no chickens And they're playing out like crazy And the Oak Ridge Boys We got to see them on my birthday Last October, late last year I had the pleasure of interviewing I believe he's 85 years old Oh yeah, man, he's great Man, they still sounded great And it was one of the last performances We got to witness that Before Joe Bonzo had to medically retire From the Oak Ridge Boys So it was a great performance But you're right, you know You do music because you love it, don't you And you'll die doing what you love to do Yes, and it kind of keeps you young I mean, I feel like I'm in my 20s Because I'm just having so much fun You know, it's just Music is magic It is, I love that And it's therapeutic, not for you But for everybody that listens to it And, you know, good time in their life Bad time, whatever's going on There's a certain song that you remember Growing up listening to That brings back those memories As soon as you hear it on the radio, isn't it Yeah, there's a song called The Song Remembers When By Hugh Prestwood I love that song, I hear that all the time Still on the radio, very well done song And tell us about this story though In this first song we're going to play It's called Gonna Get Me a Dog Well, I wrote that song With Norm MacDonald And I'd had that idea for quite a while Because, you know And I always say before I play that song I go After two divorces And many a failed relationship I discovered the pure, sure cure For broken heart And that cure is not liquor And it's not drugs And it's not another relationship The pure cure for broken heart Is what I talk about in this song And then I sing Gonna Get Me a Dog I love that So yeah, you mentioned two divorces I was like, is there going to be any more Oh gosh, I don't know I don't think so You know, I'm happier now than I've ever been I look around the house and go, where would I put him I mean, everything's just fine Just like it is And I have plenty of guy friends A lot of them are married They're still my buddies, you know We write songs together And some of the kids are 50 years younger than me You know, but it just doesn't matter Everything's equal when you're writing Well, and we're a two dog family We got two of them And they'll take over your recliner They'll jump on the couch, they'll jump on the bed And they'll scream They'll take over the house if you let them Yeah, yeah Alright, well we're going to play that from Jan Buckingham Right now on the Tim Kelly Show It's called Gonna Get Me a Dog On the Tim Kelly Show from KICR In the country radio, new country's best On this new music Friday That used to be my man But as I got to know you Nothing turned out like I planned Why you found someone Why you found so much fault with me I'll never understand So go ahead and leave me now I just don't give a damn Gonna get me a dog One that won't talk back When I get home Lay his head in my lap Lie by my side When I take a nap I'll sleep like a log When I get me a dog Gonna get me a dog Who's right and true Who won't complain about things to do When times get tough He'll see me through it all Who needs you Gonna get me a dog Gonna get me a dog One who loves to play When we go out He'll never stray He'll take a walk Anytime I say No need to talk When I get me a dog Gonna get me a dog Who's right and true Who won't complain about things to do When times get tough He'll see me through it all Who needs you Gonna get me a dog When I lay down the law He'll give me his paw I'll scratch behind his ear And he'll bring me a beer Good dog Gonna get me a dog Maybe from the pound Then I won't miss Having you around We'll eat from cans To happy hounds Living high on the halls When I get me a dog Gonna get me a dog Who's right and true Who won't complain about things to do When times get tough He'll see me through it all Who needs you Gonna get me a dog He can bark all night And I love that sound Won't mind him digging in the ground Better than having you around Who needs you Gonna get me a dog Once again, her name is Jan Buckingham from Nashville, Tennessee. She is live with us tonight on the Tim Kelly Show and that is a great song, so well done and a great story of Gonna Get Me a Dog. Thank you. Yeah, you're welcome. And like I said, we're a two dog family and boy, they're family, aren't they, when you get a pet like that. Oh yeah, I've got a cat right now that just rules my world. Absolutely. So we love our fur babies. There's another great song that we're going to play called One Tequila. There's a lot of drinking songs in the world of country music. Tell us about yours. Well, now that song I wrote with Lorraine Lewis who was in Femme Fatale in the 80s and now she's in a rock group, All Girls, called Diga. And so anyway, we wrote the One Tequila and I'm releasing that on May 1st just in time for Santa de Mayo because it's just a great track. It's got the steel drums in it and everything and it's a real fun song. Oh. Yeah, it's another answer to the heartbreak. Yeah, there you go. That is awesome. Now, let me ask you this too because the three songs that we're playing today are fun songs. Is that the kind of songs that you prefer to write? Do you write ballads or something real sad? When I was young, you know, you kind of wrote sad songs, but I have found that if you laugh at the past, that's the best way to live a successful, happy life. And, you know, sitcoms are called pain plus time equals humor. Because, you know, sitcoms, they kind of make fun of things that work. Like if somebody says, what are you doing, honey? And he goes, nothing, honey. When it first happened and they told you nothing was happening, you probably hurt, but later when they speed it up and they do it on a sitcom and you go, what are you doing? Nothing, honey. You laugh. You think it's funny. So, after Queen of Denial, that big song, we've all been in denial at one time or another with somebody and it was painful at the time, but when you look back at it and you write a song about it and you can laugh at it, it makes you feel good. And it keeps you young as you mentioned earlier too, doesn't it? Yeah, sure does. Absolutely. You know, I had never heard that before. Pain plus time equals humor. That's interesting. It sure does. And I laugh at all the things that hurt me in the past. Now, nothing hurts me because I've got a good attitude. You know, I wake up every day or when I'm doing the night shift thing that I have to do for another gig, I'm always trying to, in the morning, find something to get people started off to a good day. So, I started on TikTok over there on this app that everybody is watching. Tim's Daily Jokes because I think just a short little, you know, pick me up for the day to get your day going with something funny and make the day a whole lot better. You know, there's so much negative out there in the world today. I try to keep it on the positive side. Yeah, and I just love it when I make people laugh when I'm playing out. It just makes me feel good. It makes them feel good. It's just, you know, it's a good life to have. Absolutely. Your third song has a great video to it. I just put it on our TV channel, ICTV, Indie Country Television, and the title of it is Simply Weed. Now, I know this is probably Willie Nelson approved, but I love this one. Tell us about this one too. Alright. So, I was sitting with a writer one day and we were and Russia had just invaded the Ukraine and I was like, gosh, isn't that awful and evil and greedy and, gosh, if we could have just mellowed him out, she goes, yeah, we could get him stoned and I went, and we just started writing a song about how weed, you know, like if you drink a lot of liquor, you make self-destructive decisions. But if you smoke a lot of weed, you just usually lay back and don't do anything. So, we just kind of wrote a song about that, just a fun song and I know it's controversial and not all states are legal yet, but it's getting that way and it's kind of nice. Yeah, we are here in Missouri, that's for sure. It is legal and well accepted and they're making money off of it. You know, it all started in Colorado when it went legal there. You know, they had a surplus in their budget for the year at the end of their first year of legalizing marijuana, so, you know. Yeah, the authorities love the tax they get off of it. They do. But, you know, it's been proven and used for thousands of years and so many medical benefits, but you're absolutely right. When somebody gets stoned drunk, they a lot of times get mad and they're mean drunk. When they smoke weed, they want to start a band. Isn't that true? So, we're glad you're singing though, Dan. It's been fun having you tonight and we're going to play these next two songs for the folks, but where would you like folks to find you on social media and maybe dig into more of that 2,000 song library that they can check out? Oh, okay. Well, they can't dig into all of it. I'm just releasing once on a month. Once on a month? Yeah, in October of 2023 and I've got them all planned out through December of 2024 and then I'm going to release more songs like They Never Made it to Memphis in 2025 and if they want to find me on Facebook, it's Jan. Buckingham and the number one so that you get to my Facebook page and it has at the top of that video that's so fun to watch and then on Instagram, I'm Jan underscore Buckingham and then you can go on any streaming platform and just search Jan Buckingham and like Spotify or YouTube, I've got a YouTube channel too or Amazon Music or iTunes, any of them, the songs that I've been releasing will be there. That is awesome. Man, one a month, that's making us wait, but it's worth the wait, I'll tell you that. Well, I'm just, you know, taking it easy, starting out as my own record company, but I may after that in 2025, maybe I'll release one every two weeks, I don't know. Okay, awesome. We love to keep you on the radio and we love playing your music, so keep in touch. Let's do this again. It has been a blast. I've loved having you on tonight. Well, I sure enjoyed talking to you. Yeah, it is a pleasure. We're going to play One Tequila and then Weed and go check out the video to Weed. It is awesome on our TV channel as well. ICTV Indie Country Television and it's also on YouTube. Jan Buckingham is who we're talking to tonight. buddies Grab a drink at a fish area Finding no back road No one knows Tearing it up Until the roots do grow Sunday mornings Off of church And up and going to church Giving thanks to God For what life's worth Roots run deeper Than a Georgia pine Tell me your story I'll tell you mine Every fall it's the county fair See people you know Standing everywhere Just catching up It's the small town looking around At all the things that have changed Since I rolled out That brand new coffee shop Used to be a gravel lot It was the home game hangout spot And now it's not It's real clear to see That with or without me The sun'll go up The sun'll go down They'll widen the road Out with the old Breaking new ground Ripping the roots And the heart right out Every time that I come back It's different from what it used to be I know I'm the one That left this town But it feels more like this town left me I just ran into Miss Robinson My next door neighbor Going up She said hi back But I'm not sure that She recognized who I was How can a place Such a part of me Move right on Without stepping feet Cover my handprint With fresh concrete Paving over my memory The sun'll go up The sun'll go down They'll widen the road On 58 South Out with the old Breaking new ground Ripping the roots And the heart right out Every time that I come back It's different from what it used to be I know I'm the one That left this town But it feels more like this town left me Left me On the outside looking in Wishing I was part of it again Going back every time I can Every time I'm watching Don't like that high school band And that summer cold It'll come down They'll widen the road On 58 South Out with the old Breaking new ground Ripping the roots And the heart right out Every time that I come back It's different from what it used to be I know I'm the one That left this town But it feels more like this town left me This town left me Town left me This town left me This town left me This town left me
