Nothing to say, yet
A group of friends from Santa Ana are starting a podcast to record their conversations. They all have different backgrounds but came back to Santa Ana. One of them, Richie, is a professional MMA fighter aiming to make it to the UFC. He started wrestling in high school and eventually transitioned to MMA. He enjoys the feeling of being in the spotlight and using his training to win fights. The friends ask Richie about his experience getting punched in the face and how they train for it. They also discuss the intensity of their sparring sessions and how they still hit each other, but not to knock each other out. They share stories of getting hit hard in practice and getting revenge on their teammates. Let's go. Alright, well it's recording. So, cheers guys. Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. First episode. Yeah. Let's get it. First podcast adventure. Yo, so basically we're just fucking trying to get a podcast going. Yeah. To chop it up. Basically it's all shit. I mean, when we kick it, I mean, I think we should be recording our conversations because sometimes you have pretty cool ass conversations, so here's a, here's a fucking chance, we're taking a chance or some shit, I don't know. Yeah, yeah, it's pretty cool, I mean, we've been talking about this for a while, you know, we all come from similar backgrounds, but we have a different journey and kind of like, you know, we all came back to Santa Ana, so it's pretty dope, you know, we all went our separate ways for a while and then came back and I mean, we've been wanting to do this for a while. So, it's pretty cool to get together with you guys and do this, so we'll see how it goes and everything, right? I think we're gonna start with some in-ear adjusters, though. Alright, T, hit it. Hit it. Hit it. Hey, hey, hey. Yeah, just a thanks to everybody. We're called Homies and, you know, we've been talking about doing a podcast for a while, so here goes to episode one. Yeah, I guess I'll introduce myself. I am, my name is Richie Machete Miranda. Lightweight. Yeah, born and raised here in Santa Ana. I'm a professional MMA fighter and, you know, here's my homie Ricardo. Take it away. Yo, what up? Bro, I'm basic as fuck, to be honest, bro. But, yeah, I mean, these homies, I think I've known them for about over ten, I think, right? Yeah. So I think I met Richie first because of wrestling and shit. Almost 15 years. Nah, nah, I take that back. I think I met Martin first. Nah, as a homie, I met him just saying what's up or whatever, right? But who's Martin? I think Richie's the one that I kind of became friends with first. But, yeah, I think I met Tanner later on. But, yeah, bro, I'm basic as fuck, so. Yeah, I mean, there's not much to know about me. I mean, I'll give the spotlight to my homie Martin. Let's go. So, yeah, my name is Martin. And, yeah, so I met these guys a little bit over ten years ago now, fucking time flies and shit. I met Richie, you know, we're on the same wrestling team. We're on the wrestling team here at Segerstrom. And we would go to tournaments, we would kick ass and stuff. And that's how we met each other from wrestling. And then Java, like you said, well, actually, Java, I knew him from middle school because, like, you know, I would see this fool, like, you know, just walking around campus. And then I bumped into him at Segerstrom one time and he asked me about wrestling. And then, like, that's when, like, I was like, yo, come out, you know. And he came out and, like, he ended up joining the team. He was in football before. And, yeah, that's how we met. Wait, to be clear, though, to be clear, these fools know me as Java, but my name is Ricardo. Oh, yeah. We're talking about Java. It's me, but, yeah, it's a trip how that name came about. And I remember, too, but the wrestling team, my bad. The wrestling team fucking came up with that. But, yeah, if you hear Java, it's me. All right, teammates. Go, teammates. What up, everyone? They call me Tanner, team name. Only white line in the group, but more than raised in Costa Mesa. Gang. Yeah. So, let's get, I mean, let's get, I mean, we could talk about how, you know, Richie right now, you're, you know, you're an upcoming, you know, prospective UFC fighter right now, bro. And I don't know, like, I think a lot of people want to know a little bit more about how you got into this thing, bro. Yeah, tell us more about it. Like, all of a sudden, like, I mean, you didn't start out as a UFC, like, I mean, we know you earlier on, right? And, like, after high school, you know, we all went our separate ways. So, what led you to get into professional fighting, bro? No. Yeah, no, it's really cool. It's pretty cool. You know, staying in contact together. You guys are big supporters of my life and fight career. You know, you guys are my brothers. And, yeah, so I started wrestling back in high school. And then I started, I watched a little bit of boxing growing up. But then I wrestled in high school. And I went to go wrestle at Santa Ana College, All-American twice there. Then went to Nebraska Kearney, wrestled two years there. And, yeah, my last year of school, I ended up just started training MMA, you know. And four months later, I had my first fight, first amateur fight. And just the whole experience, the training, and just the whole feeling of being in the spotlight, I guess, and just brought me back to wrestling. And, yeah, you know, it felt nice to use all that training to go beat somebody up and, you know, get your hand raised. It's a, I don't know, it's like a drug, you know. Like I always tell everybody, like, the most alive I feel is when I'm in a cage, you know. Like, yeah, it's a good feeling. But, yeah, here we are, 7-1 as a pro right now, you know. Hopefully Dana calls, you know. But, yeah, just staying in training and keeping my weight down and staying ready for anything that comes. And, yeah, you know, El Machete will be known in the UFC soon. Yeah, that's dope, bro. And, like, I mean, I think that's crazy, you know, how you took your journey to now. You're knocking on the door to be in the UFC, bro. Yeah. That's crazy. Yeah, I never thought I was going to be fighting, you know, at least professionally. But, yeah, I mean, I guess just life took me to here. And my goals and dreams are, I mean, I'm pretty much living my dream, I guess, like everybody says I should. But honestly, it's just me trying to accomplish each goal, you know, and taking each fight at a time. And, you know, my goal is to get into the UFC, break that ladder. Knock the door down, I mean, and start climbing up the ladder and then, you know, work for a UFC lightweight championship, yeah. Hey, bro, let me ask you this. Like, your first fight, when you first, like, started getting punched in the face, were you like, oh, fuck, damn, what the fuck? No. Or were you like, you didn't feel it? Because I know a lot of people don't go into MMA because, you know, they don't like that, they don't like people punching them in the face, bro. Yeah, no, definitely. I mean, I've never really been in a street fight, you know. I mean, you're the Santana fucking... Yeah, I've never been in a street fight, really. But, I mean, that's what you train, you know. It's like wrestling, you know. I mean, of course, you're scared someone's coming at you, but same thing, you know. I mean, I'm going to say this, yeah. Getting hit in the face is kind of... It's not for everybody. It's not for everybody, and you get used to it. But, yeah, you know, even now, you see people that are just strictly wrestlers, and they get hit, and then they go back to their natural abilities, you know. So let me ask you one thing, like, you know, from a person that doesn't train fighting or whatever, right? So, like, in boxing, I see them sparring, and they have, like, perfect, right? But what about when you guys practice? Like, do you guys, like, train for, like, those hits or whatever? Like, do you guys do anything to prepare for yourself? Yeah, so the thing with boxing, you use the full headgear because you're taking more hits, of course, to the head and to the body, you know. So you've got to be more cautious of that, and then of cuts, too, you know. Because if you get a pretty good hit, you know, if you have, like, a bony eyebrow or something, you can get a cut. But for us, we don't train with headgear, I mean, unless you have a cut. But, yeah, I mean, we still hit each other, not to knock each other out to the head, you know, but to the body and to the legs, it's open, so you can hit a little harder, you know. But, yeah, I mean, yeah, I mean, you're still getting punched. Like, when you're practicing, do you go, like, 100%? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Do you go 100%? Like, you're not scared of, like, injuring your teammates or anything like that? No, well, of course, I mean, we have a control of how our sparring is. Like I said, we hit, but we don't hit, like, to knock this person out, you know, or to, like, extremely hurt them. But, yeah, I mean, I'm still trying to finish my teammate, you know, during the round. It's kind of like chain wrestling, huh? Yeah. You're not, like, letting yourself get taken down, but at the same time, you're just, it's not a match, so you're not trying to pin him or anything. Yeah, but, of course, it's like, in wrestling, you know, to score points, you got to take somebody down. Well, I got to punch this one, too, you know, so in practice, of course, we're still hitting. I mean, we still hit each other good, you know, but like I said, to the body and to the legs, it's open. So, to that, we can hit a little bit harder, but to the head, of course, we're a little cautious. But, shit, if we say we're going light and someone hits me hard, shit, I'm going to get them back, you know? Yeah, very fast. I got to show them. I got to give them that oomph, you know, like, make them feel my power, too, yeah. And I'm sure sometimes, like, even with your own teammates, sometimes there's something that aggravates you, like, when you're practicing, you know what I mean? Like, I remember in wrestling, some guy would, like, keep hitting, like, a single shot or something, and it pissed you off a little bit, you know what I mean? But, I'm sure it happens when they're practicing. Yeah, no, definitely. Like, yesterday, one of my teammates, Ethan Ewan, he's got a fight coming up here in two weeks. And, of course, I'm southpaw, and he's orthodox, so my left hand and his right hand are always open, you know, because we're looking straight at each other. So, that's the punch that's going to connect more. And, yeah, this motherfucker got me fucking right in my eye, you know? It just triggered me. I was just like, fuck, like, my defense was off, and I got to get them back, you know? Yeah, that's pretty dope. Yeah, but I'm sure you get to build a, you know, good relationship with your teammates for that reason, right? Oh, yeah. Yeah, no, we compete, but, you know, after the round, before the round and after the round, we shake hands, and, you know, it's my brother. So, he's helping me get ready, I help him get ready, and, you know, just excited to watch them perform, yeah. Yeah. Let's talk about coach. So, you started at a CSW, and now you're at the Den. What do you mean? I was going to ask that question, fool. That's good. Well, elaborate. How has Ben Jones changed your mentality from day one until now? Yeah. That's definitely not what you're asking. For us, we don't know your coach. Like, who is he? Tell us more about him or what. All right. So, yeah, Ben Jones, yeah, he's been my head coach now for, what, four years since I moved back, 2019. I took my first amateur fight a couple, like, a month after I moved back. But, yeah, he was a professional fighter. I believe he was, like, eight and four in his career. Excuse me, for what organization did you fight for? He fought for Bellator, and then he fought, the biggest one was Bellator for sure, and then he fought for a couple other ones, too. He has, like, two titles. Sorry. My guy had to burp. We're drinking. It's modelo time. Yeah. Yeah, I ate some pozole before, so. Oh, did I? It hit. No, it hit. It hit. But, yeah, no, my coach, yeah, he's been coaching for, I want to say, maybe 10 years or at least MMA. I want to say there's 10 or less. Yeah, no, I mean, I've had numerous coaches, you know, coming from wrestling. But, yeah, definitely, he's my dog, you know. Like, he's there in my corner, and when I fight, you know, I listen to what he says. And I'm the character in the game, and he's the one controlling the stakes, you know, so he's the one that makes all the calls. That's a pretty dope point. Yeah, that's pretty dope. I have a question for you, bro. Like, in terms of your coach and, you know, the fighter relationship, right? But, I mean, we're not in the corner when you're fighting, right? We can't hear everything your coach is telling you. But when you're in the corner right there, and you're, like, just say, you know, you're down a little bit, what does your coach typically tell you, like, or does he, like, it's just more strategy, or is there something, like, that you guys kind of, like, talk about on that corner? Are you just listening to him, or what was happening? Yeah, so, I mean, throughout the fight, he's fucking, I mean, have you guys been to my fight? He's the loudest fool there, you know? So, I mean, there's that. But then, yeah, of course, in the corner, I mean, if I'm down or something, then he's just telling me, like, all right, you got to do this, do this, fix this, you know, watch out for this. And, like, come on, let's go, dawg. Like, you know, like, a couple times this happened because there's a couple rounds I've been down, but the dopest one was in South Dakota when I guillotined that fool against a cage, you know? Like, I was for sure, I had my moments in the first round and the second round, you know, dropped him and then almost rear naked choked him in the second, but then in the third, he was able to take me down again, you know? Yeah, bro. Yeah, I remember that fight. And fucking, you know, he just, I just... I was like on my tippy toes, you know? I just knew, I just knew this was just, wanted to ride it out, you know? He was just looking for a way out and just trying to ride out the clock and, fuck, he shot in in the third round and then I clinched it up and then I was able to, he was able to get on top, I got out, and then the second time he did it, I fucking locked it in, you know, and I put him against the cage and that's when my fucking jungle arm came into play and I wrapped his neck around and... His face was purple, bro. Yeah, he was locked in, he was against the cage, bro, and he was like, don't worry about it, bro. Yeah, I know. Yeah, I was thinking about that, bro, like, now I'm trying to go back into jiu-jitsu, bro. Yeah, yeah, you guys got to join, bro. Hey, just like this pod, now we're making it happen. Now you guys got to come into jiu-jitsu and make it happen. Yeah, bro, it's because, like, I mean, it's kind of hard, but, you know, like, my younger sister, she started doing jiu-jitsu up in Bakersfield with Matt Baker. Okay, I don't know who that is, but... I'm guessing he's good, you know? Yeah, well, you know how they have this, they have the tournaments come down here to, like, full extension, like, Jiu-Jitsu World League? Yeah. Well, they come down and they always show a pretty big presence, bro, so, I mean, So he's a well-known guy? Yeah, he's a pretty well-known guy up there. That's cool. So, like, every time I talk to her, bro, I'm like, yo, what'd you learn today? And she tells me, I'm like, dude, I feel like I want to go back, bro. Yeah. It's hard, because, like, dude, like, I mean, for one, I'm not, I'm not, like, like, I just, I don't got, well, I don't have all the time in the world, you know? Yeah, yeah. You know, because I got kids, I got a wife, I got a full-time job, so, you know, trying to squeeze something like that in, it's like... Yeah, it's not your top priority. It's a, you got to commit, right? Because, like, it's always easier to just be like, ah, fuck, I'm just going to stay home and fucking... Kick it. Yeah. Drink a chela. Eat a cheeseburger, bro. After you get home from work, bro, the first thing you want to do is just, you know, chill. Especially, you know, working full eight-hour shifts or more, you know? Yeah, exactly. It's a toll for sure. Yeah. So, like, you know, it's kind of hard, you know, for us people that fucking don't do that as a profession, but it sounds dope, but hopefully, fucking, hopefully, sometime soon I'll get back in there and hopefully I can stick to it this time, because, like, it's easy to go for, you know, six months and then, you know, you kind of just drop out because life happens, bro. Yeah. No, but all I got to say is you guys should come out and, yeah, it just takes dedicating two hours of the day, maybe two or three times a week, you know, and you connect with other people and, you know, you learn how to choke yourself. Seriously, connect with other people. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Tanner needs to come out, too, bro. Bro, I'm too skinny, but I need to get on my fucking diet. What are you going to do? How long are we going to be here, bro? Tell us about your diet, bro. You wanted to tell me about my diet? I said fucking In-N-Out. In-N-Out? In-N-Out's fun, too. Damn, bro. You're on a diet, bro, or you're eating In-N-Out? Well, he's on a seafood diet, right? He sees food and he's got to eat it, bro. No, for real, like, I was trying to take a break from drinking and these foods. Yeah, let's start the podcast. All right. I'll start drinking with you. Yeah, same, bro, same. Those are all totally gone, brother. Yeah, same. Me, just as fuck. I'm in no shape November, bro. Yeah, I can stop the drinking again, get back on the diet, then I'll get back in the gym and I'll fuck these foods up right next to me. Dude, I recently started going back to the gym, but it's hard, man. Like, I think once you let yourself go. Day one is the hardest, right? Bro, like, you put on all this weight, bro, and you're like, damn. Bro, I can't move this ass, you know? It's a trip, right? Yeah. And not only that, but we're getting older, you know? A year passes by, bro. And then, bro. But, like, you'd be surprised, because, like, 24-hour fitness here, like, right here on the south coast, bro, like, everybody's super fit there, bro. Like, even older people, like, there's this older guy in there, like, dude, that guy's fucking super fit. I'm like, damn. That's crazy. Like, he never misses, bro. He never misses. And me? I'm like, fuck, bro. I gotta go to the gym. You gotta dedicate an hour and a half a day to yourself. This is legs, bro. It's a two-week stop already. Yeah, you know? Like, but thankfully, the last three weeks, I've been fucking pretty committed, you know, to keep going. But one thing I do need to change is my diet, because, you know. What you doing tomorrow? Let's go tomorrow. I be eating good, bro. Shout-out to my wife. Well, fuck, tomorrow, bro, I gotta do, like, I gotta do mow the lawn and shit. You know how Santa Ana winds came by last? Yeah. On Sunday? Fuck, bro. Watch out for the brush. Yeah. Dude, it's fucked up, bro. I didn't know it. Fuck, dude. It's so windy down there on Sunday. Yeah, it sure is crazy. Yeah. Yeah, bro. But yeah, bro. Let's know a little bit more about, you know, Ricardo here. He went to the military for some time. Nah, bro. You know how it is, bro. How was boot camp, bro? Nah, bro. I told you guys I'm basic as fuck. Let us know, bro. How was boot camp, bro? You couldn't contact anybody? Like, how did that go? Give us that insight. Well, to be honest, I think boot camp, I mean, I think it's... I think that it's hard just because it's a... It's kind of a change, bro. Like, I don't know. It's kind of crazy. I don't know how to explain it, though. But I think the biggest problem is, like, you're, like, packing your stuff barely, right? And you're, like, in on the bus, and they're just, like, screaming at you. Well, yeah, but, like, I don't know. It's more than just a... I don't know. It's kind of hard to explain. Like, it's hard to explain because, like, dude, like... It's hard to explain because, like, dude, like, um... It sucks, but at the same time, like, once you look back at it, you're, like, Oh, fuck, yeah, that shit's dope. Well, I wouldn't say dope, but, like, that shit, like, I'm glad I did it. You know that type of thing? Yeah. But, like, um... Bro, you'd be surprised. Like, most of it wasn't physical. It was more, like, more, like, like... Mental. Like, yeah, mental, bro. Like, because, fuck, when you're tired, you just want to, like... Yeah. You know, kick your feet up, kick it, you know? And, um... Just chill, bro. But, like, damn. You know the next day is coming. So, fuck, you still gotta wake up. You gotta run. You gotta fucking make your bed. Well, not so much running, bro. Like, it's not like the videos, to be honest. I mean, you do go through the things that the videos show you. But, like, that's only, like, 20%. The rest of the time, bro, like, you're, like, just doing dumb shit, I guess. Yeah. Like, drill. Like, you're just standing in formation, bro. You're just fucking trying to not fall asleep and shit. Yeah. Because, uh, you're just so tired, bro. Like, it's hard to not go to sleep, you know? But, um... It was dope. Uh... I would recommend it, though, for sure. Like... Can you imagine doing that? Yeah. I think you should put it on your channel, man. Yeah, bro. I do have a great channel. I was on Air Force A. Air Force A. And, bro, you're trying to get on a diet, bro, right? That's why you're looking like you're on a diet right there, right? Yeah, yeah. Air Force. Flying and throwing. Smoke and diet, bro. Like, I lost... Like, in boot camp, right? Yeah, I remember when you came out of boot camp, bro. You were like... Yeah. Bro, like, you looked like you were out in the sun for a long time. Yeah, bro. You know? You know what? Like, I had all three meals for the day, bro. Like, I just... I think you're just burning calories throughout the day. Yeah, like, you just... Sunrise. You guys were out so much, you know? Sunrise to sundown, bro. Like, you know? Like, it's, um... Like, the amount of food just wasn't enough. Like... Yeah. I remember, like, I was one of the bigger bodies, bro. So, like, um... And, you know, I'm kind of short and shit. You would get some extra chow? Nah. Nah, fool. I wish. I wish that was the case, but nah. Like, the, um... I mean, fuck. Low-key, I kind of, like... I want... I'd be... I'm the fucking dessert and shit, but... Yeah. Like, um... Nah, yeah. Break your food, bro. Like, you get, you know, like... You get your salad and you get fucking chicken breast and rice. So, you're telling me some guys would get dessert and some... Oh, yeah. I mean, you have... You can get dessert, bro. You can get dessert, but you just knew you couldn't have it. Well, because, um... I think it's to everybody's... Everybody's experience is a little different. But, like, my drill instructors were, um... Like, they knew I was heavy. So, they were like, yo, don't even fucking look at it. Like... Damn. So, one of the ways that I kind of got... Because you kind of learn... It's kind of like, like... Like, once you kind of learn the ropes... And you kind of learn how to, like, maneuver around shit. Yeah. Yeah, you're kind of like, oh, okay, cool. So, what I would do is, like, um... So, I was one of the... Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay.
