yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah so um besides besides just that what she wants to do with the land back she wants to turn it into an area for all natives to come and use whether it's for ceremony whether it's from going to do your fasting ceremonies whether you need to come and pick elderberry or go berry picking or find natural resources to make regalia go hunting on the land if you need to just as long as everything's respected that's always that we ask for but uh i thought that was really cool when you mentioned that as david shared the fight to have land rights is a lengthy and complex battle he shared that his battle has always been a part of his life if we examine the historical events we can begin to understand the emotional turmoil involved in the site federal colonialism beginning in the 1400s aimed to permanently remove native tribes from their land and destroy their relationships with plants animals and the land one way this was done was through the violent displacement of tribes and force and assimilation even though the u.s would create land treaties with tribes to establish boundaries the u.s frequently broke these treaties and destroyed native communities these damages also continued in the form of exploitation of the land in addition many limitations were placed on native communities in regard to what they could do on their own land these historical factors help us understand why the land back movement is emotionally powerful for native people it also shows the importance of native tribes having land to rebuild these connections with mother earth land is not simply just land it is a part of them it is intertwined with their being traditions and culture but now what what can be done from here we know colonialism is destroying a world of knowledge that we cannot get back but what can we do to help oftentimes people outside native tribes can be hesitant to help often fear since from a lack of understanding so i asked david what he wanted to tell people who would like to get involved but didn't know where to start here's what he had to say and a lot of times i meet people and they're really nervous to ask like oh how do i how can i support this without it without disrespecting yeah and i get that question all the time from white people which is fair and i completely understand that but i tell them all the time we don't bite yeah i don't bite you know there are natives out there who completely ignore the fact that white people exist so i understand and i i thank them for asking those questions on how they can support so ultimately i would just say apply you never know what you can actually what you can actually do until you go and ask for it show them who you are as a character as a person to make the time and place for you like for me with my aunt like she had everything already figured out so there wasn't really much that i had to do until she said hey time for us to go clean up um as he stated taking the chance and offering what you can is important look for events in your local community and build those connections many events are very welcoming to those who want to learn edward and i discussed this topic as well and here's what he had to say and the one the one important message is that we never had borders our people never had borders because you said you're being same and that's an important message to have you know we're all human beings we're all we're all people and make sure you put that we're all two head or four two-legged on this journey called life you know and so uh we are we are required as uh as human beings to carry this message to those that are seeking uh a relationship with higher powers and i mean that in a good way you know we talk about the gospel and that's what we're trying to do to get them connected not not to the european god but to the god of their own understanding that that that is the thing that we need we need to attempt to be of service to our fellow man that's the important message and don't be afraid don't be afraid to ask questions you know and basically that's pretty much not a party to ask questions and seek out those that speak truth to you you know because for me i've learned that i don't want to get caught up in anybody's bs i don't have i don't have the uh i don't have the time my life left to deal with all the bs going on he calls for us to learn and seek out those who speak the truth he also acknowledges the damage borders have caused in our communities and the divide they have created many people today define themselves by manufactured colonial borders in order to repair our connections with each other we need to dig deeper into the effects of exploitation and settler colonialism we need to take the initiative to continue to learn and ask questions ask why things are done ask where things come from and ask how they affect our communities we need to acknowledge and learn from the past we cannot regain the knowledge we have already lost but we can fight to ensure that more is not lost and that traditions can carry on for generations overall edward and david point to the importance of kinship with the native communities and the land back movement our lives are part of our environment we can no longer view nature and humans as separate and in order for us to flourish for generations to come we must seek to coexist with nature it is our family it is our duty to care for mother earth and this is what the land back movement is about we must recognize indigenous peoples inherent right to their land and resources and work towards a more just and equitable future for indigenous communities by critically examining the effects of federal colonialism and the aftermath of centuries of abuse we can begin to pave a way for native communities to restore their land rights and stewardship over their ancestral territories so you
