We are talking about proofreading and error-checking our resume. We are one step closer, one step away as a matter of fact. When we finish today, we're only going to have the sixth part left of our six-part series on how to ATS proof our resume. So today, I've got four points. This is probably going to be a short one, but one that I really enjoy doing with my clients. So let's talk about proofreading and error-checking and I'll give you guys some real-life feedback from some resumes that I've seen and probably why this is a pet peeve of mine and why I enjoy coaching through this so much. So let's dive in. Four points today. First one being proofread your resume thoroughly. for grammatical errors, typos, and punctuation mistakes. I've mentioned this before and I'm sure I will continue to mention it in future episodes, but you have got to make sure that you proofread your resume. An easy way to proofread is read it backwards. Take a look at the page and instead of reading top to bottom, I'm going to read it backwards. and proofread. Make sure that grammar things, if you need a comma, if you need a period, if you don't need a period, but it's there. If you see things that are misspelled, if you see things that are mispronounced, if you see things that are mispronounced, if you see things that are mispronounced, if you see things that are mispronounced, if you see things that are mispronounced, if you see things that are misspelled, if there's a period but it should be an exclamation point or a question mark. Those things are easier to find when you read things backwards. So that's the first point for today. Proofread your resume thoroughly for grammatical errors, typos, and punctuation mistakes. The second point that I want to take, that I'm going to talk about today is use online tools or ask a friend to review your resume for an additional perspective. If you don't have a friend that you trust enough to look at your resume, ask a family member. If you have someone at church that you could go to for advice, if you have a mentor, or someone that's in your youth group, or someone that's in the choir with you, or someone that's in your women's group, any of those things. Find somebody, a confidant, that you can go to them and ask them to take a look at your resume and give you some honest feedback. Listen, if they're not going to give you honest feedback, then don't let them review your resume because that's not helping you. You want feedback that will be beneficial for you. So ask somebody that you truly trust and that you're not going to get mad about. It's constructive criticism. So ask a friend to review it and be willing to accept what they say about it, what they recommend about it, what questions they might have. Maybe they read through it and it brings up a question for them. If it brings up a question for your friend, it is likely going to bring up a question for a recruiter or a hiring manager. So if you have access, of course, to online tools, everything that's available in Microsoft now and Apple, and you can use Chat GPT, but you definitely still have to switch that up. It's not fake-sounding in that it really does sound like you and it's really your experience and your words and the way you speak and not the way a computer speaks. There are tools online available. If you know how to use them, if you know how to find them, then certainly use those online tools. If you can't find any of those online tools, then use the route of asking a friend so that they can review your resume just to give you that additional perspective. Okay, the third point that I want to mention today when it comes to proofreading and error checking is to ensure consistent verb tense and proper grammar throughout. What does this mean? All right, it's been a long time since you were in grammar school, in elementary school, and you had to talk about nouns and verbs and adverbs and adjectives and all those things. What's a verb? A verb is an action word, remember? So any kind of action. Is it current action or is it past action? Read through your resume and make sure that if you're speaking in the past, that you're always speaking in the past. If you are currently in your role, the one time that you can use current, the current terminology there, your current verb tense is in your current role only. All of your past jobs, all of your previous work experience is past tense. So make sure that underneath each position, you're using consistent verb tense and proper grammar throughout. This is where those online tools come in real handy because not only will it spell check for you, but it'll check your grammar as well. So utilize those resources that are online if you can, if you have access to it, and if you know how to. All right, so the fourth point that I want to make today is this one is my pet peeve. I've mentioned on previous episodes, I want to reiterate again, as someone that has reviewed thousands and thousands of resumes, I will quickly throw a resume out if there's no contact information or if the contact information is not correct. So make sure the last thing you check is that your contact information, including your phone number and email address, are correct and are actually on there. Yes, put your phone number on there and yes, put your email address on there. All the other stuff is optional, but you must have a phone number and you must have an email address. If you don't have those two things, not only is the ATS going to think that you might not be a real person, but the recruiter or hiring manager is not going to take you seriously. They don't have time to look you up on your LinkedIn profile and search for your phone number or search for your email address. They just don't have time to do that. You want to make it easy for them to contact you. So make sure that your phone number and email address are on your resume. All right, so this was a quick one, but all about proofreading and error checking. So to summarize part five of our series, the first point that we talked about today was proofread your resume thoroughly for grammatical errors, typos, and punctuation mistakes. The second point that we discussed was to use online tools or ask a friend to review your resume for an additional perspective. The third point was to ensure consistent verb tense and proper grammar throughout. And then the last and fourth point that we discussed today was to check for correct contact information, including your phone number and your email address. So I hope you guys enjoyed talking about this part as much as I do. I really do enjoy proofreading and error checking and coaching my clients through that part. It's one of my favorite things to do, and it really is just a fun, you know, just to look at things from a different perspective. You know, it's odd to have someone else really critique your work in that way, especially since it's been so long since we've had a teacher or a professor do that for us. So that's really ultimately what this section does when you're working with a coach or when you have a friend, you know, look things over, your family member look things over for you. So proofreading and error checking, again, one of my favorite parts. So I hope you all enjoyed part five of our six part series, how to ATS proof your resume, and hope you're looking forward to our sixth and final part of this series. Hey there, ambitious mama.
