We have a nice guest here tonight, Martin Murphy, a.k.a. Muggy. We left off there about the trip to Berlin. I just want to talk to you about Berlin, Martin. I know that you're back four years now, back into Newbridge. That's where you're from originally, isn't it, Newbridge? Yes. That's four years, and what are you doing now? You're doing band work, or are you doing your own stuff? Can you tell us what you were up to? Well, you don't have to tell us everything, but what you got up to in Berlin, because I think it's a beautiful city. I was there before with my partner, and I'd love to go back. But to stay that amount of time, you were there about, what, 15 years now? Yes. It's amazing. I would have loved to stay there for what it was, but I enjoyed it. So there you are. You have the floor, and go for it. Well, I suppose, I mean, just before that we had a band with Barry, and we were doing kind of an Americana vibe, and a lot of my home recordings at that time were very kind of Americana. But I had this other kind of desire to do kind of more kind of darker, kind of keyboard-based kind of things, more gothic even. The Doors? I don't know, kind of retro, maybe 80s kind of, be a bit more like post-punk kind of stuff. So I had these different strands going, and I actually split it up. I split my recordings up into two, I think Muggy Days, and then Muff TV. And there were like two different bands, and you used to sing different on them as well. Yeah, yeah. You were asking about Berlin. Yeah, I got to Berlin. I suppose a musician comes to a point where they need to, they're looking for a bigger city, aren't they? I mean, you're looking for a bigger city. So I picked out Berlin, and yeah, I was really happy with it, you know. I played music over there, didn't always find the kind of music I wanted to find, but I was certainly busy doing a lot of acoustic stuff, really. I played with a couple of singers, a couple of great singers. I just backed them up with accompaniment, and then played some klezmer music as well. That was good fun as well. What's that, klezmer? Yeah, kind of Jewish klezmer. Oh, yeah, yeah, like the clarinet stuff and all. Yeah, absolutely. Woody Allen is famous for that. Yeah. What was it, Andy Hall or something? He got the Oscar for Best Director of Andy Hall. Where was he? He was on his log and playing his clarinet at the band. He wouldn't move. That was his night. He didn't care about the Oscar. Someone else, one of the women, I think that got Best Actress in Andy Hall or something like that, she picked up the award for him. But it was funny, he couldn't be. He played every week in the same place, didn't he? Yeah. I found, when I was in Berlin, I loved it. As I said to you earlier on there, Martin, I'm a big Bowie fan. When we were going around, I was looking at some of the songs that Bowie had, as I was saying, going along, the trams I'd seen, where he was talking about, you know, the songs. There was a track called Nightoon that used to really freak me out. He was on that same album as Heroes. Yeah. Yeah. He had one, what was it, V2? Yeah, he had some. He loved that place. It was only when you go over to Berlin, but when I was over there, I was just doing a week course, I was telling you there earlier on, and two big bands that were there, and they were talking about Goth and all that stuff. I like Goth stuff, you know. But two bands that have risen there and stood at the top. Now, I know Kraftwerk, you know what I mean, are brilliant. Go back a long time, when I was younger, I used to listen to them, and they were really something there. But they had The Cure there, right, and Depeche Mode, and there was guys talking, there were DJs and there were blokes that were doing this course enabling electronic music, and you want to hear them talking about these guys, that these have stood the test of time, like, you know, now The Cure. We were just playing it there, they were on there with Bertie, and the other band, Depeche Mode, they're held in high esteem, like, you know, in Berlin. I think the electro scene is so big there, that bands like Depeche Mode, or anyone who can remember Depeche Mode, definitely did. The 80s was a very special time in Germany, you have to remember that. Oh yeah, that's what I'm saying. There's some sort of psychological link in there. I remember this year, because of the fact that, you know, you went over there for 15 years, and when I went over, I only stayed there for two weeks, and I said, I would have loved to be in here, when they said the Berlin Wall, I remember when the Berlin Wall, that was on the television, and I thought it was something comedy that was going on, and I was actually, what's happening here, you know what I mean, and all the things, and I remember, they started playing Heroes one night, and they showed footage of, what it was like, people swimming across one particular river, to go from east to west, and it shows you this, shot at, shot at and everything, but it shows you this patrol boat, a German patrol boat, and it's coming up, right up to try and stop these people swimming across, and there's a guy with his jumper on, probably the Russians, I don't know, but no, I think it was the Germans, they were cutting this guy off, but he had this sort of iron jumper on him, and when he was swimming in this, it was sort of drowning them all, trying to get across, but he barely got across, and the people were egging him on, and it's in Black and White, you don't hear that, but the music that they were playing, to this particular footage, was Heroes, and not only was it Heroes, it was Heroes that David Bowie was singing in German, you know, he sings it in German as well, but what happened was, it shows you, there was the people dragging him off to the shore, and when he gets up, his sleeves and his jumper are standing on the ground, because of the water that's in it, but you could see on his face, you know what I mean, that he made it over, like he defected over, and then to see, to go from that, to seeing these people go from that, I remember one night, it was on a radio station, they were shot, they were doing audio footage, of this radio show going out in Germany, in Berlin, and what happened was, this guy is talking, and this is an affairs program, and this, and the other, and you can hear someone coming into the studio, and all you hear is a big thump, onto the counter, and the stranger words in German, what has actually happened, they're actually saying to the guy, in the radio, he's gone up like this, here's a piece of the Berlin wall, it was brilliant man, you know, it's amazing, just even talking about Berlin, and Germany, you know what I mean, how far it's come along, but getting back, I'm hogging this bloody thing, I should be coming back to yourself, but you know, 15 years, it's a good stretch to stay in one country, and I'd say you've learned a lot from that, they love traditional music, but no, that's for a fact, you know, the Irish thing didn't really take off for me there, there's already a lot of German bands playing Irish music, in a complicated enough scene I suppose, that didn't really take off, but yeah, I was very active as a musician, there, playing lovely venues, small venues, a lot of cafes and restaurants again, and a couple of festivals and stuff, and yeah, enjoyed it, towards the very end, I was collaborating with a drummer, and he had a room in a building, that was just full of bands, as you can imagine, a Soviet era apartment building, called the lasagna buildings, because the ceilings are very low, just like that, but nobody wants to actually live in those anymore, they're very low value apparently, so a couple of them, they basically gave them to bands, so you have like 200 bands in a building, and we loved it, we went on and on and on, we loved it, and that sort of thing, I was a bit sad that that happened at the end of my tenure, I suppose, and could you stay with these places, that you could, not just play in them, but could you stay, could you sleep in them, could you keep in them, yeah, people did that, yeah, they wouldn't be living there now, but yeah, those were the days, it's crazy, but yeah, Berlin, I'd love to go back, I'd love to live in it, once you've done it yourself for a few years, but I'm getting on, not that I'm old enough, but I'm thinking upstairs, I'm 20, but the rest of the body's saying, no, you're not at this age, but what are you doing, the band was, you have a band project coming up there now, I heard them mention their BPM, I don't know, is that going to be the good, the real name for the band, are you picking up something else, and what sort of, I know you're doing some cover stuff, but you want to bring in your own stuff as well, yeah, I think that, I think I probably always had a different point of view, from a lot of the musicians around, in that I'm not content, I suppose, to just playing pub on a Friday, playing a couple of covers, I've always wanted to do a little bit more, and be more creative, so I think we can actually, we can probably do both, we can certainly do both at the moment, but I'd love to have an album out there, because at the end of the day, people remember your own music, when you make it, and the lads definitely have the ability, and yeah, I was delighted, they asked me, we were actually hanging around, anyway, it was last year, last summer or something, and the lads kind of announced, they wanted to put a trio together, so I was delighted, yeah, I love being in a band, it's very hard to put a band together yourself, but if somebody asks you to be in one, yeah, great, yeah, no, fair play, it's not easy out there, there's so many bands out there, trying to get there, make it and so forth, and getting around and getting the gigs, you know what I mean, it's not easy graft at all, let me take my hat off to you, because I wouldn't be able to, it would be like hell for us, like to be, you know, shifting stuff around, but, yeah, the, someone with a bad cough in the background there, did you hear that? Yeah, but, yeah, you've got them two guys that you have there, in the band, one's a good bass player, and, I have to let everyone know, Legendary, yeah, Legendary, he actually taught me, how to play bass, and I didn't just stop at bass, like, once I knew the, the roots of it, like, you know what I mean, get the blues chords together, and, with the bass, and ever since that, like, you know what I mean, I've taken up all sorts of, you know, instruments, now, I play them very badly, but, I get a tune out, I've been told, I've got an okay voice, and, yeah, it's, it's the thing of competing, it's not the winning, as they say in the sports, it's the competing, but, Jack Jarrett used to say, but, I, I haven't heard, the, the drummer Paddy, now, I've, I've seen him on, on footage, like, you know, but, you know, I love to hear the drums there, there and then, like, you know what I mean, and, so, hopefully I'll get to see his, playing, and, I'll give you, down along the line, if you want to, record something, it's, it's, yeah, this radio station is here, and, this goes around the world, I know it's an online station, it's a community station, but, it's, you know, it's got a heart of gold, it's, it's Arrow Voice FM, and, hopefully, we're hoping to do a bit of recording in the summer, and so, we'll have something to give you, yeah, anything, yeah, the EPs are, you know, anything to play, could end up, jamming out stuff here, and, just sort of, having a good jam, throwing lyrics on top of it, and saying, oh, that could actually, yeah, oh, yeah, be a bit of something, what you can do
