They mention their mentors, Kevin and Shauna, who helped them with research and focusing on the positive aspects of turtle conservation. They also discuss the challenges and benefits of their care experience, including public speaking and communication. Overall, they express gratitude for the opportunity and for the podcast host. Hello everybody, welcome to our podcast. Today we will be talking about our journey through care. I'm Cody and I'm Olivia. And today we have a guest with us. Hi, I'm Sloan. And she will be interviewing us today about our process through our care. Okay, first question, what is your question? Our question, what is our question? Trouble for turtles. And our question, I guess, how can we save slash spread awareness about the Western painted turtles? Cool. Um, why did you choose this topic? And like, what drew your attention to turtles and specifically the red eared sliders? Well, I was kind of just so I knew that I wanted to do this about like, a more endangered species in British Columbia. And I wanted some invasive species to be in it. So I started looking on some like, invasive species, BC websites, and I came across the red eared slider. And then after that, the Western painted turtle. Um, so that's kind of how it got jump started. So Liv, what was your experience like with your mentors? Who were they? Where was what? Who do they work for? And what did you learn from them? So we talked to two mentors, we talked to Shauna and Kevin McCarty. Um, we first talked to Kevin, and he mostly introduced us to Swan Lake and how there were a bunch of turtles washing up on shore. And we don't know if they were natural causes or from humans disrupting them. And he just got us started with this project and more into what we were doing. And then after we talked to Kevin, we had a meeting with Shauna and she's she's been helping us out with creating the board and organizing and just trying to find all the information that we can about the Western painted turtles. And we were going to do our topic on the red eared sliders. But she made us focus more on the Western painted turtles and putting more of the positive stuff out there. So then they have a better understanding of what is actually happening and why we should save the Western painted turtles. Very cool. Um, Cody, anything to add here? Talks with your mentors? Yeah, I guess. Yeah, working with Shauna was definitely very beneficial for us. She's a really nice person. Really helpful. Like Liv said, she was really helpful on getting us to focus more on the positives and more on the painted turtles and the red eared sliders and the negatives. It was really nice to meet with her. That's awesome. Um, okay, that's all great, you guys. Last question to finish up. How is the experience of doing care for you? What would you change for next time? What went really well? And what were some complications? Good question. Um, yeah, this is my second year doing care. I somewhat enjoyed it last year. I've enjoyed it a little bit this year. Um, it's been a really good experience for me. Definitely helped me to come out of my comfort zone a bit. Especially with that public speaking, being in a big room full of a huge crowd and everyone coming up to you asking questions, so many different people. It's a lot. But I do sometimes enjoy it, believe it or not. Um, it's gone somewhat smoothly this year. It's been really good working with Olivia. She's been a great partner during this whole experience. Definitely couldn't have done it without her. She's been great just helping with the research. Fantastic with Shauna. She's done most of that and she's really helpful. She's working on a design for our board right now, which is super great. Hope it's gonna turn out good. Yeah, I guess just something maybe we could do better next time is the communication. I do believe that was lacking a bit and communication could be worked on. Um, talk about this. Yeah, this is my first time doing care. And I found it a big struggle trying to communicate with my partner. And there was this one student teacher, her name was Kendall. And she always noticed when I was like, I wasn't doing good. And I really needed to get put back on the put back on track of doing my work. And she sat with me and she told me, like what topics to go off of. And yeah, I think it's, I think this is a great experience. And it's definitely putting people out of their comfort zone. Definitely me and Cody. All right, everybody. Thank you for tuning in on our podcast or journey through care. Hope you enjoyed. Once again, I'm Cody. And I'm Olivia. And thank you to our hosts. Really helpful. Thank you for thinking of these questions to ask us. Maybe we could do another one sometime. It was a really good experience. Thank you. No problem.
